We recently travelled to Vancouver Island. We spent a night at Campbell River then travelled to Ucluelet for 2 nights and then Victoria for 2 nights. The journey through the National Park was long and draining and the weather blotted out any views of the scenery. Having arrived at Ucluelet we found our b+b excellent but the place was a real disappointment. Most of the restaurants were so expensive and very overcrowded but we did find a super pizza place called Romans. They had good food to make up for the dreary place. Next day the weather was fine and we went to Tofino which again was average. We wish we had spent 4 nights in Victoria instead of making the journey across the width of the island to 2 towns that favour activities for the younger person and after an hour had exhuasted what they had to offer. This side seemed more expensive too, accommodation, food and shopping. The weather on the return journey was lovely and it someway made up for the dreariness of the west coast. If you are short of time or have only a limited amount to spent on the island I would recommend you miss off the west coast unless you want to do some serious walking, kyaking etc. Bear trips can be made from the east coast if that's what grabs your fancy.
