“Vancouver Island Pacific Coast Cottage”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2012

We stayed in one of two cottages at Surfs Inn. It was in the back of the property in the woods, very quiet since it was away from the road -- no view. It is small, but with 2 beds that can sleep 4 (one was in a loft). The cottage was very welll appointed so such a small space -- just a 2 burner cook top and no oven. The linens are excellent. The cottage is a duplex so a family could have both sides. There's a porch with chair and great BBQ with all the tools.

The Surfs Inn is one of the best hostels I've stayed at so far - staff is extremely friendly and helpful, the common area is very spacious and there is even a garden area with a BBQ guests can use. There are only two dorms, so the athmosphere is very cosy. The location is also fabulous, it's right in the middle of Ucululet town. Lots of restaurants and also a supermarket and liquor store around.

This was the first time I stayed in Elephant Cottage, but my son, his wife & baby stayed last year and recommended we stay this year. We were 3 adults and one 2-year old. I was impressed with the place and we enjoyed our 10-day stay. Because the cottage is located at the back of the property, it's away from any streets & traffic which meant our toddler could wander in and out without worry, and it was very quiet. The front area is gravel with a fire pit that looked like a small pot-belly stove (fire wood available) and the rest of the cabin is surrounded by a wonderful forest. We had deer come through from the forest past our windows and up the lane almost every day. It was nice to wake up to a quiet tranquil setting with the birds chirping right outside our windows. Everything was very clean when we arrived & they came in half way through & changed all the bedding & towels & cleaned the place for us. With two bedrooms (one with queen bed with upper single bunk, second with double size bunk beds - all comfortable), each with their own 3-piece bathroom, including a bathtub in one, a cozy living room area with fire place & flatscreen tv, a small fully kitted kitchen (with dishes, full size fridge & stove with oven, all cooking equipment) & a gas BBQ just outside the door, comfy lawn chairs for around the fire or up on the wood decks (one deck outside front door, second deck outside one of the bedrooms), Elephant Cottage would easily suit 4 adults or family with 4 kids. It's walking distance to shopping (we bought all our food supplies for the week at the very well stocked Co-Op and did all our own food preparation), coffee shops & restaurants and right across the road from Ucluelet Marina. We surfed Wickanninish Beach or Long Beach twice a day each day (about 30 min or less drive), hiked the Schooner Cove trail to the beach (highly recommended!) and drove into Tofino (about 40 min) to putter through the shops. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Elephant Cottage. Thanks for the great stay Surf's Inn!

Room Tip: The kitchen is small but very doable and well stocked with cooking equipment. Coffee pot, coffee &am...

Stayed in Kiwi Cottage which is one of the cottages offered by Surfs Inn in June 2012. Very nice cottage. Easily could sleep 4. Has kitchen and very nicely kitted out. The oven is a bit small and only 2 hobs if you plan to cook but overall very nice.

Enjoyed a week get-away with my teens .....this perfect little cabin tucked in the trees, but right in town, was awesome !
They have taken a tiny space and made it work !
Small kitchenette stocked with dishes ,2 burners and a sink worked great ~ we brought all our own food . BBQ was good for cooking the meats .
There is only a tiny bar fridge , so I was glad I had frozen portion- sized meals....it all stayed fine for several days on ice ,in the cooler out on the porch.
It was a tad challenging with limited counter /prep space , but we kept it simple and had fun !
the kids climbed in to the tight space under the ladder to get to their side of the kitchen table ~ neat local slab of wood -reminded me of the galley in a boat ! good spot for tea and cards !
The market in town, just up the street , has everything you could need .
The kids were happy to climb up the ladder to sleep up in the loft , so I got the main bed -it was very comfy with nice linens. . Small flat screen tv with dvd player was nice in the evening .
The bathroom was a lovely surprise ! Roomy ,modern ,clean with plenty of hot water .
We felt private and tucked into the trees ,reading in a patch of sunshine out on the porch.
Nicole made us welcome, was friendly and gave us great local tips .
We were glad to have a chance to explore Ucluelet .
The hiking is awesome on the wild pacific trails ; try supper at Cyn@night.
Having a cozy home base like this cabin to come home to for meals and sleep at such reasonable prices was perfect !

This is was the second time i had stayed in the Elephant Cottage, and both times have been impressed. The cottage is placed at the back of the property so it is quiet, and the windows look out onto woods. Everything seemed to be very clean, and plenty of room for two couples or a family of 5. The gas fireplace was also very nice on those cooler nights and all found the beds very comfortable.

For the price we paid for this accommodation I think it was well worth it!

Room Tip: Not sure what the main building hostel rooms are like, but the cottage is well worth the money

My 2 adult kids and I stayed 2 nights in the elephant cottage in December 2011. It was perfect for us. Clean, quiet, cozy, 2 bedrooms with comfortable beds, 2 nice bathrooms, fully equipped kitchen, and living room with fireplace. It felt more like home than the hotel rooms we've stayed in on past visits to explore the burly west coast. Friendly, helpful staff. Thank you Surf's Inn for a very nice place to stay. We will be back to Ucluelet, and will definitely look to stay in the cottage.
