“Just what we needed after a very long day”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013

I booked the Cliffhouse in April 2013 as the first B&B for our tandem bike trip around the Avalon Peninsula. Unfortunately, a few days before our scheduled departure on the Argentia ferry on August 5, the ferry was cancelled and we were left to fly into St. John's and ride 91 miles from St. John's to Branch.....a very long day on a bike. We arrived at Cliffhouse about 7 pm, and Chris was there to greet us. He knew we needed to eat because restaurants and grocery stores/convenience stores are rare along the roads down to Branch. Chris called the Gannet Restaurant down the road near the turn off to Cape St. Mary's Bird Sanctuary (the closest restaurant) and made sure it was open and sent us on our way in his car. We had a very tasty dinner of pan fried cod and mashed potatoes.....just the thing for our depleted energy stores. Back at the Cliffhouse, our rooms were very comfortable, and breakfast was varied and tasty. We were sorry to have missed our hosts, but both Chris and Priscilla had left for work.....We were really sorry we could not have enjoyed all the Cliffhouse had to offer as we had to set off early the next morning, but if we ever get back to Branch, we would love to return and take it all in.

We stayed 1 night at the Cliffhouse. We stayed in the Fairy room, had a great view, even with the fog, which adds to the charm. The House is gorgeous and built to be a B&B with ensuite baths, large bedrooms and the added touch of a poetry book opened to a great traveling poem . It is situated high on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Breakfast was self serve and an extended continental breakfast with hard boiled eggs, which I really appreciated as I need protein in the morning! Chris and Priscilla are gracious hosts. They even shared ice cream that evening with delicious bakeapple sauce. We ate at the Gannets Nest in St Brides which was very good. Visited Cape St Mary's Ecological Reserve, stunning even in the fog. We were sad to learn that Chris and Priscilla will be closing as a B&B after the 2014 summer season. I cant imagine staying anywhere else when we return as I am afraid that nothing will compare :( in the Branch/St Brides area.

Room Tip: Fairy Room is in the front of the house with amazing views and sounds of the ocean.

The setting couldn't be more beautiful, the house couldn't be more comfortable and clean and the owners (Chris and Priscilla) are among the nicest people we've ever met. If you are in the area of Cape St. Mary, this is the place to go.

Room Tip: There are only 3 rooms and they are lovely

After reading all the reviews and positive comments, we were a little disappointed. It was a very pleasant B&B with comfortable rooms. They had a very nice sitting room which we had access toWe did not see our hosts - just a few minutes when we arrived and a few minutes in the evening. Breakfast was a self-serve affair with notes posted directing us to various food offerings. We finished our breakfast, cleared our dishes as instructed by the Post-it Notes and left. No sign of our hosts. I'm sure it had the potential to be excellent.

We didn't have the views that others have raved about because we were fogged in for a couple of days, but the fog added character to our visit. Plus Chris and Priscilla's warmth and friendliness more than made up for the lack of a view. Both evenings we were there we sat with Chris and Priscilla, who told us stories and information about the area. We learned a lot -- and laughed a lot!

It's a good base for Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve and Cape St Mary's, where Chris works.

The continental breakfast was really tasty and more comprehensive than some of the other breakfasts we had. It so was nice to have yogurt! We had fun poking around the harbour in Branch and had 2 tasty cod dinners at the restaurant near Cape St Mary's. We've been staying in B&Bs for years - this is our favourite!

Room Tip: We enjoyed the fairy room

Modern home with all amenities.

The REAL attraction is the home & the site it is on.

It is located on 150" cliffs overlooking the ocean..

The hosts are fabulous and a wealth of information.

Chris was born in Branch & knows all about the area & local customs.

Priscilla is the towns Mayor.

They are both great hosts.

Only drawback is eating. Gannets in St. Brides ( 15k away towards Placentia) is the best choice & has great crab/seafood..No other viable alternatives although Priscilla offers a picnic lunch that we did not avail ourselves of.

Scenery between Placentia & St. Brides(Branch) is awesome. So is St. Mary's if there is no fog.

.

Room Tip: being relatively new & modern the rooms are of a good size

Built as a B&B, this beautiful house has spectacular views. It is situated on a cliff overlooking a bay, and the town (really a village) of Branch is across the water.

The hosts are a well-educated couple who are pleasant, but busy. It wasn't until the second night of our stay that they paid much attention to us, but then, they chatted with us for hours! And they were fascinating to talk to.

The breakfast is not typical B&B, but a cold buffet, the only protein being hard boiled eggs. Fortunately, there is a restaurant nearby. Still, they invite you to have tea or coffee any time of day or night, and to sit in their uber comfortable living room and just absorb the view. Or, go for a swing on their swing set or sit on their lawn chairs. You'll love the place. But hurry. They are closing at the end of 2014 season.

Room Tip: I think all the rooms have a view, but we were in the Fairy room. It was glorious.
