This past Thursday, June 25th, I took my boyfriend out for his 21st birthday. After looking into a few restaurants online, I decided to surprise him with Old Surrey Restaurant because of the menu selection and the overall atmosphere. I loved the style of the house (dark aged wood, bright windows, white linens, and it was divided into smaller rooms for a more intimate dining experience).
For appetizers, I had the spinach salad with blue cheese and my beau had the shrimp bisque soup. Both were perfect sizes to start. For our entrées, I had the fresh pacific halibut with basil coconut cream sauce and he had the chicken breast stuffed with cream cheese, artichoke hearts, and spinach. We were both blown away! The freshness and quality was prevalent and loved the combination of flavours. Each dish also came with mash potatoes in a form I have never seen before (breaded and baked in little lumps... I think this was my boyfriend’s favourite part!) We took our time to savour it all.
Our waiter was polite and helped us choose a half bottle of wine to compliment. He was a little stiff, but I also assume he is the manager or owner. We were treated well, despite our young age for such a restaurant.
The pricing was decent for the quality of food. All together (including a half bottle of wine), the bill came to $88. We were never rushed (there were only a few other tables being occupied throughout the time we were there), we weren’t bombarded with constant questions or checkups from our waiter, but also weren’t neglected as well. There was complimenting music playing and photographs of the history of the house/city throughout the restaurant.
We would both definitely choose Old Surrey again and recommend it to anyone looking for quality and relaxation in a restaurant with style and excellent fresh menu choices.
