“Very Pleasant and Relaxing Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2010

We stayed at the Levuka Homestay for two nights in December 2009. The owners, John and Marilyn, were very friendly and hospitable and went out of their way to make our stay an enjoyable one. Originally from Australia ,John and Marilyn have adopted fiji as their new home and run the Levuka homestay together with their attentive anf friendly staff.

The Levuka Homestay is well located for exploring the beautiful historical town of Levuka with all of Levuka's sights within easy walking distance.

There are 3 guest rooms at the Levuka Homestay at the lower level of the house. John and Marilyn live on the top level. Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable with a choice of fan or air-conditioning to keep it cool.

Each day began with a very long and leisurely breakfast filled with Marilyn's home cooking - homemade breads, chutneys, banana pancakes, jams, museli; a selection of fresh fruit, mostly from their own garden, followed by a cooked breakfast of bacon, sausage, eggs, tomatoes. As my breakfast normally consists of a single cup of black coffee, I generally had to follow breakfast with a bit of a nap. As Levuka is a very relaxing destination this is a perfectly acceptable option.

John and Marilyn also invited us for drinks on their patio; introduced us to some of the locals in the Ovalau Club and helped us organise trips and return transport to the airport.

Overall a very enjoyable, relaxing and interesting stay.

We have stayed in Levuka Homestay for 6 days on Oct 2009.
Our purpose of visiting Levuka was diving and it didn't disappoint me. I saw my first hammerhead shark in Wakaya and there were many pelagics in Levuka passage, we saw whitetip reef sharks/ eaglerays/ barracuda. Diving here was simple wonderful. Make sure to ask for Pipeline if you are experienced diver.
The dive centre booked the homestay for us and it exceed my expectation. This is a really lovely place. John and Marilyn are wonderful host. I am a shy guy but I enjoyed chatting with them very much.
Rooms are clean and well decorated. With fan/air conditioner and hot water shower. Thanks Anna and Matilda for cleaning up our rooms every day.
You can go up to their office upstairs which has a really good view of the whole Levuka and surrounding islands. There is also an open kitchen and Marilyn prepares breakfast here.
They don't provide lunch and dinner but the breakfast as mentioned in other reviews, was wonderful, I like banana pancake and mixed fruit juice very much.
Although Levuka is a bit quiet but I like this town very much. It is a very "warm" town with very friendly and sincere people. I am sure I will go back very soon.
John, I will surely send you photos of my daughter later.

We stayed with John and Marilyn on the second stop of our honeymoon, and we had a fantastic time. John and Marilyn were fabulous hosts who made us feel welcome from the start, even arranging a taxi from the airport.

The homestay itself is beautiful. Our room was comfortable and had everything we needed including a small fridge with cold water. The deck above the rooms is a great place to relax, read, or chat with John and Marilyn, and we loved sitting there. The gardens are well-cared for, and everything was very lush. We have only praise for the accommodations and surroundings.

John and Marilyn are wonderful and inviting, from the welcome drink on the deck to the unbelievable breakfasts each morning. They are extremely interesting to talk with, and we had a great time learning about the history of the island, the people, and their own story of ending up in Levuka. They were also extremely helpful about arranging hikes and suggesting places to eat.

While in Levuka we did two walks with Nox (also the gardener at the homestay). The first was the Plantation Hike and the second was a walk from St. John's College. We enjoyed both immensely, and Nox was a fountain of knowledge about the island and his village. We had a great time with Nox, and he even joined us for dinner one night at Whale's Tale.

Overall our visit to Levuka was one we won't forget. The people are fantastic and the homestay is comfortable and welcoming. We hope to return to Levuka again, and if we do we will definitely be staying with John and Marilyn. If you are looking for a fantastic homestay with great hosts in an historic Fijian town, definitely visit Levuka. And don't leave without going for a walk with Nox!

We came across John and Marilyn's place via Lonely Planet which gave a great recommendation. It certainly was a correct one! To reach the property from the airport takes 45 minutes. The road is for the most part all gravel so ensure you choose a 4WD taxi as opposed to a mini van for a smoother less bottom damaging ride. Arriving at the house we are met by John (owner) who showed us to our rooms and how everything worked. The rooms themselves are lovely and quaint and have everything you need to be comfortable; cosy queen size bed with side tables; fridge with tea and coffee; good sized shower and bathroom. The house itself is built into the contours of the ridge so each room has it's own layer and balcony with seating area. After we settled in we were invited up the the top deck to have a welcome drink with John and his wife Marilyn who gave us an overview of the area, Levuka's history and activites arranged by themselves. The views is superb, the ocean overlooking Wakaya island. John then took us down to the Ovalau Club to meet a few locals, entertaining stuff! Dining options are surprisingly good, we opted for seafood the first night, fresh lobster with lemon butter at Whales Tale restaurant for $18 each! The next morning was breakfast, grand, homemade with local ingredients. Be prepared to eat very well as you simply cannot resist straight from the pan to plate banana pancakes with morish passionfruit and lemon butter - naughty Marilyn! Levuka town itself is from yesteryear with little changing from the Colonial days, it is very charming. After a great pizza (Levuka Pizza) we took one of Knox's tours and visited St John's church and college with a leisurely scenic stroll back into town. Knox works for John and Marilyn and grew up in Levuka, we found him very informative and it was a great way to pass away a few hours. The highlight though had to be the village tour of Tokou village, the first village in Fiji to be converted to Catholicism. An amazing experience with true Fijian hospitality that we will always remember. On arrival we were given salosalo (garlands) and each assigned a tour guide. We then did a sevusevu (offering) to the chief that allowed us to roam the village with his blessing. Next we were shown and explained the lovo (underground food oven) which was cooking our lunch later. Then we were given green coconuts to drink and were taken to the church, the school and the graveyard where the first Catholic priests and nuns to come to Tokou are buried. The setting is just amazing, lovely mountainous backdrops with lush vegetation. We then were treated to kava (local beverage) ceremony and the lovo food, chicken, palusami (spinach in coconut cream) and dalo (root vegetable like potato). Then it was time for the dancing! Although our visit only lasted for a couple of hours it was the most memorable, warm and hospitable experience that we will never forget. Vinaka vakalevu to Tokou village especially Jo, Ben, Chris and Stella! Levuka is a great place, charming and historical with wonderful people, well worth the visit!

I travel quite frequently for business and the only place that I think of as my home away from home is the Levuka Homestay. It's one of the cleanest hotels Ive ever stayed in. The beds and pillows are super comfortable to get a great nights rest. The day gets started off right with a great breakfast that includes freshly made delicious fruit juice, home-made Muesli / Granola, banana pancakes, passion fruit jam and other locally made preserves, fresh local eggs and freshly brewed coffee (which can be hard to come by in Fiji!!) The couple that own the place are super nice and always have a glass of wine handy for an unwinding evening chat (or Talanoa as they call it in Fiji)

From booking, to arriving, to drinks on the first night, to the daily ritual of breakfast (you could go for this reason alone) the genuine warmth of the hospitality was just wonderful. John and Marilyn have a stunning property and know how to make people so welcome and comfortable, not only with the accommodation, but also the surroundings. They are aware of their social responsibility, and from here you get the feel for the "real Fiji".
I would highly recommend this popular place to anyone, and the breakfasts...well you just have to go to experience them!

The Township of Levuka on the Island of Ovalau is no ordinary town and not easy to get to. Made even harder when one carries scuba gear as we did. But right from the start at the bus stop in Suva we had people helping us with the loading on of our gear onto the bus. They were locals from Levuka as we found out. And that seems to be the spirit of the whole town, everyone helps each other. It is well worth a visit, not just over-night, but at least 3-4 days to get the feel of the place. Meet the locals, they are happy to talk to you. We stayed at the" Homestay" where we enjoyed the company of John & Marilyn, the owners. We were not able to dive the first 4 days due to big seas so we were able to enjoy long and hearty breakfasts with interesting conversations. Highly recommend the banana pan-cakes! We had a small complaint about a noisy cold water tap which we mentioned over a casual drink at night. The next day we came home just after lunch and found it had been fixed. No need for a written report ! And we needed a taxi to and from the dive shop. The owners made several calls for taxis for us and organised our Island tour on our last day around the island, with a smile and no extra charge. Their employees( gardener and housemaids ) are treated as part of the familly and it is their second home. They are very proud and happy to work there. When we did get to dive, our breakfasts had to be cut short on the second half of our stay and we missed that. Levuka is an interesting little place, full of history, no fancy Resorts with swimming-pools and slippery dips, so leave the kids at home. It is like time stood still a long time ago, and we hope it will remain like this. Peace and quiet on a little speck in the South Pacific !
