“Food was amazing!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2012

I believe this was the best food we had in Cuba. The family was extremely friendly and the food was fresh. We actually came here twice. I had the frituras de malanga, fish cocktail and seafood bisque.

Spent two nights at this casa in mid-April. The house is spacious, cool (didn't need to turn the a/c on at all, a fan was sufficient), nicely decorated and has a lot of character. Bed was comfortable and room had an en-suite washroom with shower (hot water). Ate two dinners and one breakfast, and the food was great and plentiful!

I was taken to Los Hermanos by my ever friendly Cuba taxi driver on a day trip to Gibara.

Myself and my companion both ordered chicken for our lunch. We invited our taxi driver to eat with us and he ordered some platanos fritos, this is a must have at any Cuban restaurant, fried bananas! They were a delicious appetizer item.

The chicken arrived with rice, beans, coleslaw and more banana chips! The chicken was so fresh and juicy it was perhaps some of the best chicken I have ever eaten.

Overall the meal was some of the best food I had while I was in Cuba and I highly recommend taking a trip to Los Hermanos in Gibara.

Room Tip: You may need to know some Spanish or have someone with you who speaks Spanish.

Thanks to the informative information provided by a TA member, we decided to visit the beautiful little fishing village of Gibara and Los Hermanos during our stay in Guardalavaca this past November. From the moment we arrived at the casa we were made to feel comfortable and welcome, more like a family member than a guest. As was recommended to us, we booked our lunch on our arrival and then returned about 90 minutes later for one of the most memorable meals ever. There were garden fresh veggies, salads, freshly cooked fish and delectable shrimp in a piquant rose sauce. Black beans and rice complemented the meal. Odalis, the patrona, is a beautiful, vibrant woman whose hospitality is incredible. Although she and her husband, Luis, do not speak very much English we were able to communicate through signs and smiles. Fortunately our driver, Orestes, who speaks both English and German, would fill in a lot of the blanks for us. After our incredible lunch, we spent and hour or so sipping wine and relaxing in the wooden rocking chairs admiring the beautiful antiques in the sunny courtyard where time can literally stand still.

Los Hermanos (The Brothers) is a lovely casa – the rooms are spacious and spotless. The courtyard has a charming ambiance with both sun and shade and very comfortable rocking chairs where one can easily while away the afternoon over a good book. The beautiful colonial house with its 12-foot ceilings opens onto the street where one can glimpse the ocean which is only a few steps away. Gibara itself is very clean and offers many architectural surprises behind the massive wooden entry doors of some of the colonial homes. There are also interesting sites to visit as well as caves for the more adventuresome. The road to Gibara from Holguin is quite rough but definitely worth the trip. Be sure to hire a safety conscious driver with four wheel drive.

We were comparing some of the a la carte restaurants that we have eaten at in Guardalavaca, Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Santa Maria over the years and definitely agree that the lunch at Los Hermanos is one of the best meals we have ever had. Try it out – you won’t be disappointed.

If you are looking for a night away from the hubris of the resorts in the Holguin area, or want to spend a few days in one of the prettiest towns in Cuba, would like to eat some traditional Cuban food, or just looking for a week in a quiet Cuban setting for a week or two of R and R, Los Hermanos is for you.

Located on Cespedes #13, (telephone # 24-844542 email: odalisgonzalezgurri@gmail.com), Los Hermanos is steps away from both the ocean and the central part of the historic town of Gibara.

Los Hermanos is located in a colonial Spanish house that has been in the same family for four generations. From the moment you enter into this huge house with its high vaulted ceilings, antique Cuban furniture, and huge courtyard, you will instantly feel at home. It is absolutely immaculate and is cleaned literally from top to bottom every single day.

There are several sitting areas in the patio, both in the shade and in the sun. The different types of plants flower at different times of the year and the house parrot, "Cote" will accept bits of bread and crackers and fruit from your hand. (A word of warning, though: she is a female parrot and doesn't really like the female gender much, preferring to flirt with the men).

Breakfast, lunch and dinner is offered at the hour of your choice. Lunch and dinner can range from 6-12 CUC's depending on your choice. If you would like a simple bowl of Cuban soup and bread, a deal could be struck. They will even try to prepare a vegetarian meal for you, although the idea isn't well known to Cubans. The patron of the house is both a fisherman and a farmer, so most of what you eat is guaranteed to be absolutely fresh. There is a well-stocked beer fridge in the corner, wine is available and if mint is in season, a mohito or Cuba Libre will melt away your worries.

There are 2-4 rooms available, depending on the season. Two of the rooms towards the back of the Casa offer a double and a single bed in each room. There is one located upstairs with a small terrace and a beautiful view of the town. The only drawback: the neighbour's rooster may awaken you earlier than you had anticipated but a word to the patrona (Odalis) may result in a request to have the bird put in a darkened area until a more civilized hour. As well, on the weekends, you may hear the music from the dance at the fort drift your way, but closing the shutters should alleviate this.

All of the rooms have their own separate bathrooms with warm water in the showers. All are extremely spacious and again, absolutely spotless. Because of the vaulted ceilings in the two rooms to the front of the house , and fans, they never really get that hot, although air conditioners are available in the back two rooms.

Rooms cost 25 CUC's per night.

NOTE : this is NOT a "party central" type of place where one can bring back their new found Cuban "friends" to whoop it up until the week hours of the morn. It is not unusual to have Cuban musicians drop in during the evening to play and sing and play some tradition Cuban music during dinner, but you can be guaranteed a quiet, peacefull setting when you decide to call it a night.

Gibara is a true gem. It is one of two forted cities in all of Cuba and the cultural capital of the country, boasting more artists per capita than any other . There is a Natural History museum, a Colonial House museum, an art gallery, a cultural centre that offers traditional Cuban music on the weekends, a beautiful Catholic Church, three small beaches, daily ferry service for 1 CUC across the bay to a deserted beach called Playa Blanca, killer 5 cent pizzas from 4 different pizzarias, a second-to-none view from the top of the hill (although the trinket vendors can be a little bothersome at times), a malecon along the ocean, the possibility of scuba diving on calm days just steps from your casa door (you must have your own scuba gear), cave tours, the Cine Pobre international film festival in April, and a laid-back, friendly atmosphere not found in bigger Cuban cities.
