“Great Resort, Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2012

This resort, which is an all suite style resort, is in a great location for skiing during the winter or summer fun such hiking which is what we used it for. We visited Mt Rainier NP for some hiking and site seeing and found this a perfect spot. Its less than 30 minutes to Sunrise which is one of the best places to hike in the NP. It has a great heated pool, a separate hot tub for soaking after those long hikes, and a fun game/lodge room with ping pong table, loads of board games, a big screen TV and a fire place. The room we had consisted of a TV room with a fireplace, separate bedroom, and bathroom, and an eat-in kitchen that was well equipped. They also have a great little grocery store for cooking up meals in your room. I don't know how they mange to have just about everything you need to prepare a meal in such a small store but they do. We found it a nice place to international travelers too. About a 20 minute drive to the Ski resort which also has a great restaurant.

Room Tip: We stayed on the first floor away form the pool. a very nice location

We fell in LOVE with Alta Crystal Resort! From the second we arrived we were in awe of the beautiful location. Our cabin was much better than described with more than we could have expected - or imagined. Two bathrooms in one cabin? Yep! The cabin's decor is relaxing and speaks of the history of living in the rustic woods. The Resort is surrounded by National Forest and a few tiny antique cabins still occupied. There are walking hiking opportunities for all, even your dogs. What impressed us most? The bonfire in the evenings! Complete with a 'smores buffet for the guests who come from all walks of life, what a wonderful SURPRISE! The perfect combo of the quiet solitude of the peaceful rainforest plus a way to connect with others... This place is destination-enough a year-round paradise, ...not to mention that mountain, that gondola thing and the skiing!

Room Tip: You can't lose! ANY choice is a great one! We think upstairs vs. downstairs is about the only...

I was visiting rainier and decided to stay at this location. Felt little expensive, i paid 270$ for a suite. But i think its common for these locations.

About Suite:

Suite is pretty good. Suite contains kitchen. So you can plan on bringing your own food and cooking as you will not find many options in the hotel. All you can find is frozen foods (I didn't like the food i took). Internet speed is decent. Charging anything can be little difficult as input folders are old and loose.

Hotel contains swimming pool and hot tub. Hot tub is not very clean but its fall, so can't expect more.

About location:

You are in perfect location. 6 miles to sunrise point entrance. 3-4 miles for white water trials. There are many trials around. Canyon roads were closed, so it took 3 hours for us to reach Paradise point. Without road closures it might be around an hour i believe. Ohanapecosh point is 23 mile drive from this hotel. I found this a perfect location and would certainly plan to stay here if i plan to visit again.

Staff were very friendly and provide maps and inputs.

We always appreciate that guests take the time to write reviews when it seems all of our lives are so busy! We are very happy that this guest enjoyed their stay, and we hope they get a chance to come back when the Stevens Canyon Road is open, making Paradise an easy one-hour drive. Of course, those of us who live here much prefer the Sunrise area (the highest point in Mt. Rainier National Park with the most panoramic views and fewer crowds), and we're actually the closest accommodations to Sunrise so it's really convenient. We're also just about 15-20 minutes from Chinook Pass and Tipsoo Lake with some of the best fall colors in the state.

This guest stayed in one of our Loft Suites that will actually sleep up to 4 adults with 2 children, which is why it was a little more expensive. We do also have One Bedroom Suites that are designed for couples and small families and these run around $180-$200 in the Fall, with even lower rates sometimes available with Last Minute Specials.

One thing I would like to mention is that we don't reduce maintenance on our pool and hot tub just because it's Fall. However, we are in the national forest and Fall tends to bring falling leaves and pine needles, so this may be what the guest experienced. Chemicals are checked daily in the pool and hot tub, and both are vacuumed daily -- with ample skimmings for leaves and needles in between -- but sometimes it seems that it just takes a good gust of wind to bring more down. Of course, Fall also brings wonderful colors so we're not complaining.

As always, thanks to our guests for their comments and suggestions.

Wife and I spent 3 nights here while doing Mt Rainer park. Before I rate this place you have to realize most accomadations out here aren't that good. There are no "chain hotels" because of the remote location. That being said these are cute refurbished clean and well equipped cabins. And it is good they are well equipped because food and restaurants are about 40 miles away. The lobby has a great selection of food and drink though. Nicely decorated rooms with fireplace in living area. Seperate bedroom and bathroom (a tad small but hey your in the woods right). Beautiful wooded setting with trails right outside your rooms. Lobby check in was easy and woman (owner I think) was very helpful with information about visiting sunrise visitor center.
Fixing the little things would make this a great place.Examples:the screen and window did not close in bedroom. Blinds are at bit worn and broken in spots. The refrigerator came with two little ice cube trays and when I called about an ice machine she said they only have one and it was broke. My wife and I had warm drinks. The phone is barely hanging on the wall sideways. The hot water was kinda lukewarm to cool. This was at 5am. Other than that I would say stay here for sure.

We really enjoyed meeting this guest, and we're glad he enjoyed his stay.

We did want to mention that there are several dining options that are close to Alta Crystal. The small town of Greenwater is just about 15 minutes away (12 miles) and has the year-round Naches Bar & Grill that is kind of a funky locals' spot listed in Northwest Best Places. (When we used to live in Seattle, we used to always stop at the "Cheez" on our way home for some local flavor.) Greenwater also has an espresso place/store called Wapiti Woolies and a deli called Greenwater Outfitters with breakfast and lunch. At Alta Crystal Resort itself, in addition to our store, we offer in-room heat and eat gourmet meals that we purchase from a caterer in Redmond, and the guest feedback has been good.

During the winter and summer seasons, there are also dining options at Crystal Mountain, just 7 1/2 miles away.

The minor maintenance issues mentioned by the guest have been taken care of, and we appreciate the input. I have to admit that I had to really look closely to see the problem with the screen, which is probably why I think the housekeepers did not immediately catch it. But we understand the importance of small things, and this guest's honesty is helpful.

We had 1 bedroom suite which is good enough only for 2 people. Very clean and fully stuffed kitchen. Somewhat old but very pleasant with fireplace.
Wifi service is quite bad, most of sites can't open and others are extremely slow.

We always appreciate input -- good and bad -- as we feel it can only make us get better.

We now have 2 T-1 lines for our small resort, and one is dedicated to the guest rooms, so we now have the fastest internet access for any hotel around Mt. Rainier. We previously had HughesNet satellite internet in our guest rooms, but we heard about lot of complaints about internet speed, so we've invested in this improvement. It looks like this guest stayed right before this improvement went into place.

We also just installed a new HDTV satellite television system in the rooms, giving guests access to 100+ free channels, including ESPN.

We love our location, but it has presented some challenges technology-wise as DSL and other high-speed options simply aren't available out here. T-1 lines are an expensive addition for us, but guest comments made it obvious that this was a step we needed to take. We hope everyone enjoys these new improvements.

The Good:
Mt Rainier National Park is nearby along with all the hiking trails, skiing and other activities associated with it. So this resort is a great place from which to operate while visiting there. There aren't a lot of other options this close to the mountain.
The staff is very friendly, helpful and fun.
The BBQ they hosted out in the spacious lawn area was nicely done - great food and drinks. Thanks!!
The unit (A7) we stayed in was clean and ready to use upon arrival. The little kitchen was functional.
A great place for families as there is a swimming pool and various outdoor games and activities available.
The Not So Good:
The small dishwasher did not clean dishes - and we had four people cooking and eating for 4 days - so this was a problem - we had to wash most things by hand after running them through a dishwasher cycle.
The location of the ladder to the upper sleeping area and bathroom is unfortunate. It cuts right through the kitchen directly in front of the stove. Can't tell you how many times we either bumped our heads or stubbed our toes on this. I don't know if the other units are similarly laid out - but this one definitely was problematic.

Bottom Line: If you want to stay very near the park - this is a good choice.

Room Tip: A7 had some issues as described above.

Thank you for taking the time to write this review. Just so you know, we did replace the dishwasher in question shortly after this guest stayed. Our housekeepers also noticed that dishes were not getting clean, so we ordered a new one right away.

We do clean the pool and hot tub regularly. We are surrounded by 150-foot tall trees so needles and pine cones can be an issue. We sometimes joke about topping the trees, but since we're in the National Forest, that's not going to happen. But we love our location.

As always, we appreciate the input.

We are a family with 3 young children and this place was perfect for many reasons. The hosts are great - they have it covered. Summer bbqs, evening activities, heated pool, bonfires and smores. It is located very close to Mt. Rainier and to the ski resort.

We ate at the Rainier lodge restaurant, which was terrible (Aramark). If we were to return, I would not stay in the park. We found our little chalet with a kitchen and a well stocked grocery store and the pool and the rec room and wi-fi and direct tv.... it was a perfect place to come home to after hiking throughout the park with the kids. After staying in very nice hotels, I would actually prefer this location for families because it is so easy with things to do for the kids. You sit around the fire at night and enjoy a beer while your kids play badmitton or soccer or roast marshmellows. Also, the two story lodging with the loft is very roomy and allows a family to spread out a bit.

Can't say enough good things about our visit.
