“won't be going back anytime soon!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2014

6 ladies went out for a celebratory meal last night. We thought we would give Masala, Browns Bay a go (we normally go to Bollywood, Browns Bay) - we have all been there before on separate occassions and it was ok. We were seated in a horrible spot, next to a large white wall with nothing decorating it, felt like we were in a hall way, the sun was blinding us - we had to wear sunglasses for the glare (for those of us who had then when coming out to dine at 7.30pm), it was very hot and asked if they could please open the large bifold door/windows that cover the entire front of the restaurant but the answer was no? They need to fit blinds URGENTLY to keep the heat and the glare down for diners comfort. Our meals were slow in coming (although there seemed plenty of staff) and when they were delivered 4 out of the 6 dishes were cold! We sent them back but the rice and naans kept getting returned to our table - we repeatedly said we don't want the rice and naan without the mains - pretty simple you would think?? The 2 indians gents who were helping deliver the meals (I think the owner and a kitchen hand/chef) pretended they didn't understand english etc - I really don't like that how some people understand your order and your payment in english but don't seem to understand any problems/complaints. Like my title says I won't be returning anytime soon and it will be Bollywood for me next time

“Food good, service poor”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2014 via mobile

We went to Birkenhead, enjoyed the food, but the lady obviously didn't like us. She didn't open her mouth when she spoke so we couldn't understand her. People around us she was smiling and talking to, but when it came to our table she had a personality transform. Rest of staff we lovely. It goes to show if you don't have good front staff, it can put people off ever going again. I would not go back because of how she treated us.

“Never Ever Again”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

We booked a table for 8 at the Masala restaurant in Browns Bay. When we got there 10 minutes early they had already given our table to another party of 3! They the tried to squeeze 8 of us into a table for 6! Their customer service was shocking and we eventually told them that they could stick their table where the sun dont shine. Will never ever visit another Masla restaurant in New Zealan. Never had such shocking services timer service from anybody like this before. Based on the service I would hate to think what the food is like. Eventually went next door to the Deep Creek Brewery where the food and service was EXCELLENT! Avoid Masala by a country mile!

“never again”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2013

We began our visit looking forward to enjoying the lovely cuisine at the new spot in town however, this excitement soon left us as our ‘experience’ began. Upon arriving we waited at least 20 minuets before any member of staff even approached our table to ask if we would like drinks. When we finally received them two of the beers we had ordered got knocked over from the tray begging carried by a wobbly (obviously inexperienced) waiter all over my lap and the table, soaking everything including all of the menus, cutlery, plates and not to mention our napkins which were promptly used to clean up the mess and not refreshed until we requested they bring us new ones. we then waited a further 30 minuets before anyone came to take our order for food. we ordered and then waited another 50 minuets at least for our food to arrive. unfortunately they brought out the rice first which was stone cold and sat on the table for at least 5 minuets before the curries arrived. we still then had to wait another 10 minuets until our breads arrived to eat the curry with. this meant that by the time we had received all of our food and could begin eating, most of it had gone cold and was much less enjoyable. at some point during this visit some type of green food, baring in mind that we had not ordered anything green at all, was found strewn through our whole table. there was green curry splattered on the table, on my top, in my hair, on my partners shorts, in one of my friends drink and none could figure out where it had come from. At the end of the evening when i went to pay for the less than average meal and the poor service, i explained why i felt that we had received a less than satisfactory experience. the manager/owner simply argued back to me trying to defend the night instead of simply taking the constructive criticism and apologizing. no compensation what so ever was offered even though i was left with beer all over my pants and some unknown curry on my top, not to mention the terrible service and extreme waiting times. i would not recommend this restaurant ever and will not be returning.

“Business Lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

Been here, over the last 10 or so years, on and off. Always for a business lunch with various parties. Food and service has been good and remains so. Visited last week, tried something different and once again, and very good meal was provided.
