“Gets it right”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

Arcturus is just what a b&b should be: a clean and private room with an ensuite in a big house with hosts who strike the right balance between discretion and friendliness.

The owners, a young personable couple, care about this place and it shows. Everything is clean and modern and well-considered. All three guest rooms are good and the common areas warm and well-furnished. The main floor guest room is large and features a big ensuite with a luxurious heated floor. The bed was perfect. Since the owners retire to a suite on the lower level when guests are present, and two of the rooms are on the upper level, separation between all is excellent. Cleanliness is guaranteed since one of the hosts is a pest control professional.

The deck off the main floor is well finished and a delight to sit out on. The view of Howe Sound is excellent. Since it is east facing and protected by the house, this is an ideal location for breakfast in summer. Around the side of the house there is a large hot tub that is well set up for lounging after dark.

The location, on the hillside above the ferry terminal, is well away from town. One would need a car to get anywhere except the forest. Nevertheless, other houses are close by on this cul-de-sac. While hedges and trees make the large yard feel private, noise is another issue. A neighbour's backyard party was a problem on the weekend of our stay -- a stereo blasted all afternoon and into the evening. Things didn't quiet down until close to midnight. This was unfortunate since the location seemed very quiet otherwise. Our hosts assured us that the neighbour's party was an anomaly and did what they could to solve the problem.

The breakfast was delicious and and elegantly presented. However the main dish was on the sweet side: custard-filled crepes with jam. Healthier offerings such as oatmeal or a spinach omelette even if offered on the side, would suit us better. But that is a small thing when so much about this B&B is just right.

Thank you for the kind words. We enjoyed visiting with you and the other couple travelling with you. It's always more fun when a group can enjoy together...whether it is drinks on the deck or late-night card games.

We are very sorry that our neighbors decided to overzealously entertain the evening of your stay. Usually, this is a very peaceful cul-de-sac where one can spend many hours quietly taking in the view. We hope you'll try us again during next year's tournament.

This B and B is in a beautiful, fairly new, west-coast style, ocean view home just 3-4 minutes from the Langdale ferry terminal, and a short 5-km drive into the town of Gibson's. There are two rooms: Black Bear on the main floor and Grizzly upstairs. Both are clean, well-furnished and very comfortable, and have views of Howe Sound, Gambier and Bowen Islands, and the Coast-range mountains. Both have glass-enclosed tile showers.

The best view is from the large deck in front of the guest lounge/living room on the main floor, which has chairs and table with umbrella for guests. Guests also have access to a hot tub, and can take a walk in the garden. The lounge area is spacious and furnished with comfortable chairs, TV, stereo, radio, books and games. Unfortunately, the lighting is poor for evening reading (when it's dark outside): there are no floor lamps, and the ceiling lighting is insufficient. Celia and Stan are considering rectifying this.

Full, delicious breakfasts are served in the dining room, which also has an ocean view.

Celia is a warm, very accommodating hostess and is a good source of information on Gibson's and area. Parking is in the driveway, a few steps from the front door. By arrangement, visitors coming without cars may be picked up at the ferry terminal. Children are welcome but there is a no-pet policy.

Room tip: Grizzly Room has a slightly better view because it is upstairs; Black Bear is just a few steps from the lounge and main deck.

We wanted a simple weekend getaway, and living in Vancouver, the island is a great option to do this. What a delight to find a great bed and breakfast hosted by two wonderful people. The house is spacious with lots of light - a patio, garden and hot tub to enjoy.

We stayed in the Black Bear room which boasts a 32" flat screen TV, with DVD player and access to cable and WiFi. The en-suite bathroom has an amazing rain shower - newly renovated, with heated tile floors (we really enjoyed this feature!). We were also spoiled with an electric fireplace - because we are often cool, but thanks to this we were able to enjoy extra warmth.

There is a small library with books, DVDs and a selection of some great board games. My partner and I enjoyed a game (or many rounds) of Scattergories - we are quite competitive - needless to say it was a lot of fun!

The breakfast was a real treat! Hand picked fruits made for a delicious meal. We will definitely come here again!

Thank you Celia and Stan for making our stay great.

We are so glad you enjoyed your quiet getaway to the Sunshine Coast. So easy to explore even when you don't bring a car. Come back this summery and you'll dine out on the deck in the warm sunshine.

Thank you!

We went on a small trip to sunshine cost for this family day and booked our two nights stay at this B&B. We stayed at Grizzly bear room and occupied both the rooms across the hallway upstairs between the two families in our group. The stay offered a nice view of the sea (we can see the ferries landing from our private deck).
The highlight of this B&B is the awesome home made healthy breakfast that was served by the hosts...That was delicious and a wonderful experience in comparison to routine continental breakfast served most of the similar B&B or even higher priced hotels for hat matter.

The Grizzly bear would be excellent one for a family with one or two kids. The building had a lot of living space...one on our floor dedicated to our group...and also offers a lot of board games etc for us to kill time during the night.

Overall, was a great experience and I would recommend this to all my friends.

Room Tip: Grizzly bear is good for families...black bear downstairs is good for couples.

Cozy house with a great view on the mountains and the sea. The room was very clean and comfortable and the bathroom offered a nice, modern shower. Delicious homemade breakfast made with great effort by friendly hosts who were very helpful as well. They recommended us great tours in the area. Really worth to come back!

After staying at the terrible Bella Beach Inn (staying in our vehicle would have been a 5 star resort compared to that place), we decided to try a bed and breakfast for the second night of our trip. We chose Arcturus and were glad that we did. The hosts were very kind and catered to your every need. The rooms were very nice and clean and had amazing ocean and mountain views. The sheets were the softest I've ever felt! Breakfast was amazing, they really go to a lot of trouble to ensure you have a great meal. The hot tub was very enjoyable after a long day and was kept very clean.

If I were to have one small complaint, it would be that the bed wasn't a king sized. This is a very minor complaint as we're used to sleeping on a King so it's difficult to adjust on a smaller bed.

We would definitely stay here again! Thanks for the great experience!

Room Tip: The top floor suite had the better views but has the smaller TV. The main floor suite has a larger...

Thank you for your comments. We were so happy we could improve your weekend after your first unhappy accommodation experience. Come back in the summer when you can enjoy the decks to their full extent.

Hope to see you on the Coast in the future.
