Since I knew that my sister-in-law's birthday was coming up and that sadly, my husband was going to be out of town for Valentine's day; I was excited to see that the Amherst Shore Inn was offering their 4 course Valentine's dinner each night between Feb 12-14. I immediately booked for 4 on Feb 12th even though it was a month ahead of time! When the 12th arrived we all appeared anxious to try the wonderful dinners we had heard about from other patrons. We were met warmly at the door by the wife of the chef and owner and after removing our winter garb, we were lead to a lovely parlour where we were offered pre-dinner drinks. Another 4 guests arrived, and we started a lively discussion about the benefits of retiring to the country with its' peaceful lifestyle!
Dinner was announced and we were all lead to the cozy dining room where the fireplace enticed us with its' warmth and our antique wooden tables were set elegantly with ample cutlery and fine china! The first of 4 courses a homemade soup arrived promptly. I should mention that a full loaf of home made whole-grain bread was on each table, ready to slice! The second course was a delicious salad with pickled vegetables. It was enjoyed by all. There was a choice for the main of salmon or proscuetto wrapped pork loin with beets, asparagus potato and carrots. Both selections were delicious. (we did some sharing!) Finally the dessert with coffee or tea; another tough choice to be made between a frozen chocolate mousse or an Almond raspberry torte. Everything was superb: the meal, the service, the atmosphere and even the attention to detail. They put a lit candle on my sister-in-law's almond torte and we all sang "Happy Birthday" to celebrate! One other important detail, their wine list was excellent with some interesting choices. We tried an Australian Pinot Noir which was very good.
Since the restaurant is the dining room of the Seasonnal Inn and cottages, it is necessary to make reservations in advance and select your menu from the choices offered for that evening. This is a hidden gem located on the beautiful Sunrise Trail, do make a point of visiting next season! Be sure to check out their website for more info!.
