“Not to miss in Takapuna...about time!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

ABOUT TIME the wider Auckland area got some more Mex places. This is a fantastic place, Takapuna really needs a classy joint like this, facing the beach too.

We've been twice in two months enjoying it greatly the first time, loving it the second (arrived 8.10pm without reservations). We can't wait for the third and future visits. The place packs out quickly, the first time we went at 5pm and it was already busy with early dinner diners. So keep time of day in mind. So far we've tasted the following delights:

- crispy potatoes with the yummy celery salted dip (fab);

- crab tostaditas (totally yum);

- fried chicken (to die for, a small portion (5 pieces) but exquisitely prepared and definitely memorable);

- $10 special beef chimichanga (great value, heaps of pulled meat);

- the special soft tacos: beef and bacon, prawns and ? delightful caesary sauce ($8 each but really worth it tastewise - we got two of each in the end)

- the wild mushroom and pulled pork standard soft tacos ($6 each);

- panfried choritzo dish (yum);

- prawn and chicken quesadillas

The staff were friendly, courteous, prompt, attentive - we had 3 different gals tending to us. The place was full on a Tuesday night, surprising as you couldn't tell from standing immediately outside. Some seating is community dining style (sharing tables with others, with a small seperator (a post) between eating groups) which is novel and tolerable - in fact it suits the general feel of the place which is young and vibrant: customers and staff alike. The food is a little pricey but I find that's the case with all Mexican food served outside Mexico and California where it really is inexpensive....so I don't begrudge the prices we gotta pay in NZ. A special thing about our most recent visit was ending with a special Tequila tipple in lieu of desert. It was called Xanath, cost $12 glass, was vanilla flavoured, and was truly delightful to sip and finish off the experience - our 24th anniversary. We'll continue that particular protocol during future visits...which will be monthly :) Let's support this business venture good people of Auckland's North Shore!!

“Rubbish”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013 via mobile

Food is bland fast food quality that doesn't taste much like Mexican. Expensive for what you get. Service a bit slow.

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2013

Fantastic decor, friendly waitress: "Sure, you can bring your own wine"...but she didn't tell us about the $20 corkage and we didn't see the tiny text disclaimer. Surly maitre'd left us all with a sour after taste - she clearly needs training in customer service. That, and the rather bland food - means we won't be going again. Shame.

“Great atmosphere. Great service. Great prices. Great food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

Hubby and I went to Mexico for dinner recently. We loved it! The decor is interesting with old photos and art work icluding photos of Frida Carlo adorning the walls (naturally). The food was really delicious and not overspiced or too hot.
Service was excellent. Staff here are young, fun, friendly and attentive.
They have long tables suitable for groups, or tables for two. People were dressed nicely but mostly anything goes here. You can come casual but dress up a bit too.
Child friendly. Not many there but the ones that were, were well looked after and happy. Hardly noticed them. This can be a good thing if you have "been there done that" (apologies Mums and Dads).
Prices are excellent. We will definitely be back!

“Awesome value and Service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013

I have to re-write this as I went to Mexico in December and it was terrible - food, service and drinks were all disappointing BUT my partner hadn't tried it and wanted to see it for himself last week. We called in for lunch and had a glass of Sangria each - really tasty. The waitress was super friendly, helpful and awesome at recommending things. We tipped her at the end (I think the only time I've ever tipped in NZ!!). The food was awesome - ceviche was great, chicken with chocolate sauce was amazing and the starters were good too. Overall we had a cheap and really enjoyable lunch experience so I have to say I'd love to go back. Definite improvement in service and food, loved it.
