“Fantastic retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2010

We stayed with some friends at Ambers at the end of a hectic trip before going back to Australia. It was the perfect retreat to stay to finish our holiday. Perfect company over drinks and great advise as to where to eat locally. The breakfast had to be seen to be believed. Magnificent. Highly recommended

Just a short drive North out of Auckland into rolling farmland and you turn into a tree lined driveway leading to a beautiful old world country house. My fiance secretly arranged a weekend stay here for my birthday last year and I was thrilled by the seclusion, luxury, warm friendly welcome and big romantic bed.
In return I took her back for our honeymoon this year and stayed several more nights.
The hosts are friendly and interesting and have great attention to detail. from the wine and cheese on arrival, the personally cooked breakfast we felt pampered.
Nearby you have Orewa beach which also has some great restaurants, or you can go a little further north to the hot pools at Waiwera.

Our first impression as we drove down the tree-lined driveway was of a beautiful house situated in impressive gardens. This was quickly followed by a warm and friendly welcome from Diane that made us feel relaxed. The room and en-suite was very comfortable.
However the special experience was the hospitality that we received from Gerard, Diane and Wolf the dog. We valued the time they took to give us information about the local area and restaurents. In fact our conversation extended onto many subjects as we shared a couple of glasses of good wine and some nibbles in the early evening. And the next morning, we really enjoyed the exceptional breakfast. The Ambers is well located and run by wonderful people.

The Ambers is a beautiful bed and breakfast destination. It is sophisticated without being pretentious. Our children (18,15 and 8) were comfortable in the surroundings and were well received by our hosts. Diane and Gerad are very pleasant to chat with - conversation was not a chore but interesting and easy. The location is not city and not really country but it is easy access from the main highway. No road noise... We stayed in Auckland city on the last day of our holiday and I so much would have preferred to stay at the Ambers and driven 15 minutes into the city. The waterfront township nearby was cute and had plenty of eating places. We went Thai and it was good. The highlight of our stay was our breakfast in the morning. We have travelled widely through Europe, the US and the South Pacific and breakfast at The Ambers was really, really great. I would definitely go back to The Ambers!

It was a wonderful experience from beginning to end. We enjoyed our conversation with both of you (and your dog Wolf of course!) over drinks and nibbles - a lovely start to the experience. Breakfast (with lots of choice and cooked to perfection) was very special with Wolfie at our feet, surrounded by all your beautiful and special "things". Thank you for sharing them with us.

A wonderful setting for a relaxing stay. A short distance outside Auckland in quiet rural surroundings with a selection of restaurants a short drive away. A nice room with en-suite bathroom. Very good service. A warm welcome, and available to answer questions when needed. An exceptional breakfast.
