“perfect escape from day to day life”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2013

We chose to spend the first half of our honeymoon at cathedral mountain lodge and are thrilled we did. The lodge is cozy and inviting, and the cabins are a perfect retreat. The thing we found ourselves most impressed by though was the incredible staff...warm, welcoming, knowledgeable, and accommodating. Breakfasts (included) were really great, too!

The distance to Banff is about an hour, only 30 min to lake Louise, but both drives are worth it when cathedral mountain lodge welcomes you home at the end of the day. After seeing MANY of the other lodging options in the area during our stay, we can confidently say we would go right back to cathedral mountain again.

Room Tip: Try for a cabin along the river

Absolutely amazing place to stay for that truly authentic Rocky Mountains experience. The staff are very good and give an absolutely first class service. Both James & Duncan were very friendly and gave great advice on what to do and where to go. I found all of the front desk staff to be very helpful, friendly and proffessional. They will also book excursions for you on request. Food in the restaurant was top notch. I found the breakfasts to be more than adequate and very tasty, especially the pastries. It's true that if you went later then things did run out, but a quick request and the items were replenished. There is absolutely minimal noise from the road and train nearby. The scenery around the cabins is spectacular. Having a coffee on the bridge as the day begins is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

Recently enjoyed a wonderful two days at the Cathedral Mountain Lodge. We were doing a motorcycle trip in British Columbia and planned to use the Lodge as a base to explore the areas around Banff, Lake Louise and Yoho National Park. The location was perfect, situated beside the Kicking horse river and in the shadow of the mountain, complete with a hanging glacier. The lodge sits at the entrance to Yoho. We stayed in a Premier cabin with loft and had, in our opinion, the best unobstructed river view on the property. (cabin#7). The cabin was well appointed with Aveda personal products, cozy flannel and fleece blankets/bed covers done in plaids and animal prints, rustic themed tiles and fixtures in a large bathroom, a river stone fireplace that was ready to be lit and inviting adirondack chairs on the covered porch overlooking the river. If you don't want to sit on the porch, then stroll down to the river's edge and take in the scenery while sitting by one of several cozy firepits scattered there. While we didn't partake in any of the activities, the staff volunteered to arrange several for us, including canoeing, rafting, horseback riding and others. The entire staff was exceptional, very friendly and helpful. We spent an afternoon in the nearby village of Field and would highly suggest taking the time to stroll around this quaint and picturesque town. It will take all of about 30 minutes to see the entire town and read the historical markers on the interesting buildings. Truffle Pigs or The Siding are good choices for lunch. And I have saved the best for last, the food was phenomenal! We ate roasted chicken, risotto, steak and seafood pasta dishes that were some of the best we have ever had. And don't forget to include some of the local wines from their very good selections. Reservations are recommended, but that gives you time to sit on the patio, by the fire, by the river and enjoy a drink/cocktail and make some new friends before dinner. Breakfast was included in the rate and is served buffet style and was just as enjoyable as the dinners. Just a couple of things to consider when booking a reservation here, there are about 30 cabins but as far as we could see, only #1, #2, #5, #6 and #7 have unobstructed river views. Many of the others face the back side of another cabin. BUT, since you probably will not be spending a lot of time indoors, this may not be an issue for you. The lodge sits next to the TransCanada highway at the bottom of a long steep grade so you will hear the occasional noise of the trucks downshifting to climb the grade. And a special NOTE TO MOTORCYCLE travelers, there a only about 4 or 5 paved parking spots which means you are likely to have to park in the gravel. If it is raining during your stay, as it was while we were there, the gravel area can get fairly mushy so be prepared to stabilize the bike. While I feel they should be considered, I hesitate to add any of the minor negatives mentioned because I absolutely do not think they should hinder you from experiencing this amazing Lodge.

Room Tip: Cabin #7 absolutely has the best view with #1, #2, #5 and #6 being excellent as well. Many of the o...

Needed some down time in the mountains and this fit the bill perfectly. A stunning location right on the Kicking Horse River. Our very comfortable cabin (#24) had a beautiful mountain view. There is plenty of free firewood stacked on the porch for the fireplace, and great housekeeping service. The staff are first class and go out of their way to make you comfortable. The restaurant is superb and the breakfast buffet (included in the rate) was top notch. After dinner we took our wine out to the large deck and sat by the fire while the server helped us spot mountain goats high up on the rocks navigating trails that seemed impossible. Coffee down by the river in the morning was a perfect start to the day. Go later in the summer or fall if you want to be sure that all of the nearby trails are open, but go anytime if you just want to get out of the city and relax in the mountains while someone else takes care of everything you need.

We stayed there for four nights June 2013. We reserved two cabins and
were able to get them next to each other. Cabins #1 and #2 were on the river near the lodge. The rooms were comfortable and ours had two chairs both in cabin and the deck.

Breakfast is included and good. The eggs were made in small amounts so they were always freshly made. There was always plenty of food for all.

Additionally, they serve an afternoon from tea from 3-5.

All the staff were excellent.

Because of the time of year (early) some of the hiking trails were closed due to ice.

We went on to the Fairmont in Banff for our next few nights. While that is a wonderful hotel we preferred the Mountain Inn for its remoteness and exceptional setting.

I hope that they will continue to make their own cookies for tea and scones for breakfast.

Room Tip: our rooms on the river were perfect for us.

Spent 2 nights at the Lodge - could not ask for better! The location is the best we've encountered in the Rockies, with stunning views from the cabins and Lodge. The cabins are very well appointed, couldn't ask for more (except perhaps 2 easy chairs in the cabin for weary travellers). The food is exceptional served in a superb Lodge style room, complete with roaring fire. Excellent all round.

We spent two nights at the Cathedral Lodge and found it to be small, but well appointed and quite cozy. The staff was amazingly friendly and accommodating and the restaurant is excellent. Breakfast was included and it was varied and quite tasty. We were within a few miles of some pretty amazing hikes! The drawback for some is the Cathedral Lodge is pretty isolated...lake Louise Village is about 20 minutes away. The natural beauty of the area and the opportunity to relax, more than made up for the location. We would highly recommend!
