“An awesome location in the Rockies”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2011

We are still talking about the three nights we spend here. The guest house was a great find in an excellent location and completely self contained with own entrance. Two bedrooms made a pleasant change from shared hotel rooms, and access to an exceptionally well equipped kitchen was a bonus. Central heating, light and airy, looked out towards Trans Canada Highway, the Kicking Horse River and the railway line. Beautiful snowcapped mountains in all directions. Amazingly quiet location despite Field being a crew changeover stop for the railways. The trains and the railway proved a hit with husband and 20year old son who spent an evening watching the changeovers and talking to the crew! Lovely hostess who took time out to answer questions, show us places to go, loan us maps and share a bottle of wine. Close to Emerald Lake, short drive to Lake Louise, and a scenic day trip to Banff. Field is a very small village in the middle of Yoho National Park and there is a park's office in the village - it is not at all 'touristy'. Snow had not melted sufficiently to do any hikes and many spots were still closed but would love to return when it was warmer and take advantange of the location to do lots of walking. My son's comment on our stay was "I've never stayed in such an awesome place before!" (20 year old student).

Five of us spent 6 nights at the Bears Den. The accommodations are very roomy and have a private entrance. The kitchen is very well equipped with all the appliances and gadgets one needs. (Be sure to stock up on food in Banff or Golden on your way, and do have a meal or two at the quirky gourmet restaurant, The Truffle Pigs, which has the feel of an English village pub.)

Wi-Fi and cable TV allowed us to stay in touch while relaxing in the spacious living area.
The beds were comfortable and the rooms were very quiet. (I'm the one who can hear a cat stomping around on the carpet.) We could not even hear the trains, which creep through Field at very low speed.

Local guide books are on the shelves, but you won't really need them because your inn-keeper, Lorraine, is a font of local knowledge. She works for Yoho NP and knows all about hiking, skiing, climbing, or just sight-seeing in the area. Her guidance allowed us to maximize our activities and make the best use of our time.

Great little town, close to fabulous hikes, spacious basement suite. But in need of renovations especially the bathroom. Also being a basement, it's kind of dark and cold. Was woken by host's footsteps above my bedroom each morning. So at $200 a night, this is overpriced.

Yoho National Park is a "hidden gem" for those who like hiking, and the Bear's Den Guest House in Field BC is right in the middle of it. You are also a short (under 100 yard) walk from a great restaurant and a nice breakfast place. The Guest House has amble space with two bedrooms, a large kitchen, and a good sized sitting area. It's worth spending a couple nights here if you're doing a week in Banff / Jasper. Don't expect any excitement in Field, just a place to relax at night.
