“Nightmarish Holiday”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2013

The weekend holidays was a complete disappointment. After having to upgrade at the expense of ourselves because they were overbooked, we were told we would have a better room. Unfortunately we were provided a room with no view, and later it was explained by the Guest Service Manager that the pictures on the internet were not applicable to most rooms & he agreed our original room request at a lower cost would have been more nicer view. In addition to our room having no view, a large air conditioner unit running full time under our window/balcony, and room smelling of chlorine, the room was a further disappointment when the balcony door fell off it's track onto my senior wife. Efforts to support & attend to our upsets were dismissed & after 2 months we have yet to receive the suggested reimbursement that the Guest Service Manager felt was more appropriate then our suggestions (which was reimbursement only for the upgrade costs, where he felt it was better to reimburse 1 night upgrade cost & offer 1 night free for future travel).
The paths around the hotel were safety concerns for those having walking difficulties, and the scenery at the beach was less enjoyable due to the garbage lying on the beach & floating in the water.
We were redirected to eat in our room due to events in the facility, and told that the patio was off limits due to events.
The hotel service was unaccommodating, slow, and required patience to deal with.
The concerns have been brought to the attention of the Guest Service Manager, although the situation has not been rectified.
I would strongly encourage travelers to check out other options in the area until Taboo is able to upgrade their hotel, hire staff which are trained & caring & meet the standards which they promote in their advertising.

This resort is very nice. The location is beautiful, sitting right on the lake. Our room had a large balcony overlooking the water. The staff were all very attentive and helpful. There are complimentary kayaks and canoes, as well as several hiking trails. The heated pools were also enjoyable. The only downside is the cost, which is steep. I wouldn't classify this hotel as being a very good value, but it is a very nice splurge.

We stayed a few nights at Taboo which sits right on the water of Lake Muskoka. Absolutely beautiful locale! As it is after tourist season there weren't many people around and I loved that. Food at the hotel was good, service good and rooms were nice although whoever designed the bathrooms and closet situation has obviously never stayed in a room like these. The closet is set between the entrance and the bathroom and there is a light in front of the closet which cannot be brightened more than dim and doesn't allow you to see into a suitcase. The bathroom is nice but very small and being 6'4" it would have been nice to stand under the rainfall shower head instead of having to stoop down beneath it.

My husband and I spent 4 nights at this resort over the Thanksgiving weekend for our honeymoon. We often travel with Fairmont properties, and count Chateau Montebello, Jasper Park Lodge, and the Banff Springs Hotel as resorts visited over the past couple of years. With that standard in mind, we were VERY happy with our time at Taboo.

We were in a corner room on the top floor, with a wrap around balcony and breathtaking views of Lake Muskoka. Couldn't ask for a more spectacular scene to wake up to, or a better place to watch the sunset. Room was clean, modern, with special mention going to the gorgeous bathroom. I could have spent half my vacation in that soaker tub.

The rest of the hotel and grounds were similarly great. Mid-October was slightly between seasons, so while we missed out on canoes and beach time, we thoroughly enjoyed the 6km hike through their groomed trails, which was always topped off with a cocktail in the lounge. Service was friendly and professional and excellent.

Other hotel amenities we capitalized on were the restaurant (delicious) and the spa (top notch). While my husband may prefer hiking through trees and getting muddy, I have shamefully high hotel standards. I am more than a bit confused by the scathing reviews I previously read on Taboo. It seems the resort has rectified many of the previous comments (notably a more detailed room bill, renovated suites, etc) as we received 5 star service.

Thanks Taboo for a lovely honeymoon :)

My husband and I just returned from a 3 night stay at Taboo. It had been recommended to us last year when we told friends that we had stayed at the JW Marriott. "Oh, you should really try Taboo" they said. Well after this weekend I didn't need to try it. The location is perfect but they don't have much to offer. They did have 2 boat rentals that were rented both days and a few canoes. They have a spa, but it didn't look inviting. The service in the lobby bar wasn't great, the bonfire ended at 9:30pm, we were bored at night with nothing to do. Had this been our first visit to any resort in Muskoka we would have loved it, but instead we kept comparing it to Red Leaves and it just wasn't as good. Nice place but not worth the money.

Stayed at Taboo for a business conference and was very impressed overall. The meeting facilities were very bright and open and the rooms were very modern and spacious with phenomenal views. The staff seems a little inexperienced and the checkin experience could use a little work but I would highly recommend this resort for the rooms, views and facilities alone.

Came here for our anniversary and wasn't pleased with our stay. We weren't greeted or checked in promptly. We were the only couple in line and the attendant left the counter and walked right by us without saying a word. We waited patiently for someone to show up. Parking was inconvenient to say the least-far and few spaces unless you pay the premium prices. Checked into our room +300 only to find the room bare and uninspiring, nice view of the parking lot though. Blinds didn't do there job and the am sun greeted us early and promptly. Soo much potential here however so much disappointment. Our shower broke first thing but was repaired. What a gong show-we won't be returning.
