“The Great Dane is Great!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

We are so glad that a new restaurant is up in running in the old Trattoria. The food was excellent. I had the lamb fondue (wonderful ideas and delicious). The calamari was the best we have had. The duck was excellently cooked. There are really nice twists and ideas in the food flavourings and choices. I look forward to the new renovations and to some of the new exciting ideas the Evan plans for the location. Tonight was a couples night but we plan to return for a family outing on Monday.

“Good new restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2013

This restaurant has new owners and is now called The Great Dane. We had a lovely meal here on 11th June. Very friendly staff. The only downfall was we had rather a long time to wait for our meal, but it was worth it!

“Excellent new restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

This is a brand new restaurant that has taken over the space formerly occurpied by the Trattoria della Nonna. The staff and chef (a Dane who grew up in British Columbia) were personable and friendly. My wife had mussels with a delicious sauce, followed by haddock on a bed of red and white quinoa with a beet relish. I had lobster salad with a curry dressing on the side and gnocchi sautéed in butter and sage with a gorgonzola sauce. The presentation was nice; the food was delicious. For dessert we had a lemon soufflé frozen in a hollowed out lemon with a raspberry coulis. It set off the savory flavors of the main course very nicely. The restaurant has been opened for a very short time, and a few bugs are being worked out with respect to service and décor. The food was truly excellent, and it shows every sign of being a great success. Dinner for two with two glasses of wine and a tip came to $125. This was our best meal on this trip to Nova Scotia, and one of the best that we have enjoyed in a long time.

“Fantastic new Lunenburg restaurant!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2013

I was excited to see a new fine dinning restaurant open in Lunenburg and could not wait to try it out. Despite being open for less than a week, the service was excellent, and the food even better!

I sat alone at the bar and ordered the filet mignon, which I could not resist as it's toped with lobster... It came out cooked to perfection and the presentation was beautiful.

The servers were friendly and chatted with me over the course of the evening.

My only complaint was with the decor, which I understand is leftover from the previous restaurant that was here before. I was assured this will be changing before their Grand Opening in a few weeks.

Overall a lovely dinning experience, I can't wait to come back with friends.

“Brand New out of the Box!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2013

The Great Dane (TGD) is the replacement restaurant for the Trattoria Della Nonna on King Street (also known as Unesco Fresco) in Lunenburg. And Chef Evan Moller (a Dane out of British Columbia) holds up the tradition created here for really good food. My wife and I were able to get a table on their first night they were testing the kitchen and serving. We were not disappointed.
We started with gnocchi and a salad. Both had ample portions. The salad was light and fresh with a delicate vinaigrette. The gnocchi were crunchy on the outside and smooth inside with a hint of blue cheese and sage flavour. For mains we had lamb and halibut. The rack of lamb was beautifully cooked if a bit simply flavoured. There were five bones on the rack, priced very reasonably for this dish. It could have used a bit of garlic mash or tiny roasted potato to balance the plate and provide a different taste, and we gave that feedback to the server. The halibut was flaky and flavoured with a mild curry cream sauce that was barely there to tease the palate. It was served on a bed of quinoa with a medley of roasted vegetables mixed in, and roasted asparagus on top. We did not have dessert as they are still not ready to serve it, but the items on the on-line menu look intriguing: Lemon Soufflé, Æbleskiver Red Velvet and Dirty Blondie. The wine list is short at present as they gear up, but if you ask what is left in the cellar from the previous restaurant, they can offer some special wines for you. The cocktail list on the other hand is quite long as the chef's partner is a bartender.
Service needs to improve, as some servers are new, but fortunately they have brought back a few from the 'Trat' and they are training the others. That former establishment was renowned for its service and affability of its staff. Prices are about 20% below those of the former restaurant, which makes this one very competitive with the good restaurants in Lunenburg. We had the two courses, a before-dinner drink and a glass of wine for $125 with tip. We will be back and will have no problem recommending The Great Dane to our friends and family. This will be a nice place for special occasions and the occasional treat.
We are told that they plan to serve at lunch and dinner (and perhaps Sunday brunch) year round, which is a challenge in touristy Lunenburg, but with their prices in check and good quality, they might be able to do it. Reasons why I did not give top ratings in atmosphere and romance stem from a problem they inherited from the previous restaurant -- the room has poor acoustics and we recommended that in their redecorating they look to some sound-absorbing materials. That should not stop anyone from eating here, however, as the food experience is worth the sometimes noisy ambiance, if you are seated near a larger group. I also look forward to giving them an 'excellent' for service, once they get things better organized. Our dinner took two hours, and there were large time gaps between ordering and eating; and between courses.
