This restaurant is in a great location where locals once enjoyed the best coffee house Lunenburg has ever boasted...Historic Grounds. Since then, one promising restaurant has failed and now the Savvy Sailor is giving this well loved location a try. The view of the harbour is AWESOME! The restaurant is casual, comfy and cozy.
There were some problems with the menu this first year, but the owners are of a well known local family and I have every confidence they will open next season to a host of improvements. I and my guests always found the service friendly, gracious, and timely...no complaints there at all until toward the end of the season, when it seemed to be just a little slow. The chef is trying too hard to make the breakfast selections trendy. My suggestion is that the Savvy Sailor simply try to replicate the breakfast menu of Historic Grounds with some upscale modifications. The prices are too high for the local pocketbook, but that's true almost everywhere in Nova Scotia. The venue is the kind of place that tourists will enjoy the most as a breakfast, lunch and coffee place and that is what everyone who lives in the area really wants it to continue to be. The lunch menu was very hit and miss this year. The "signature" soup here does not hold a candle to the Peanut Soup at Magnolia's down the street and something completely different such as a hardy bean and sausage or cold potato soup would be better.
