A great getaway. We go for a conference every fall, so anything to do with water sports is not mentioned in this review. They have a lot of activities planned in general, so lots to do. The hotel also seems quite child friendly as we see lots of families there but have not brought kids with us. (Our conference had activities planned as well). Pools and hot tubs are great. If you are into hiking and learning about neat things in the woods...like mushrooms that can kill, edible ones, animals, tracks...I would suggest Robin Tapley's Nature Trails - tapleynaturetrails.ca He will book for large groups and smaller ones. I personally found him passionately knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide.

Room Tip: They all seem great!

We visited here in February on a tripadvisor special. The room was fabulous with a fireplace and kitchen-frig microwave and hot plate with all the dishes ,cutlery, pots ,glasses you would need. We had planned to x-country ski but the trails right nearby were not track set so we snowshoed( provided for free with our deal)
The pool is lovely- it goes outside as well as inside. So invigorating swimming outside in the winter! The hot tub outside was great too.
The staff were very friendly in all parts of the resort- the bar area, restaurant, front desk and housekeeping...
We had a meal in the restaurant that was excellent. We had some things in our room as it was convenient being able to relax and make our own breakfast. Would highly recommend it. The area surrounding is so pretty even in winter- would be great in summer ane fall as well.

This is a lovely property located in Muskoka, Ontario. The area is gorgeous, with huge pine trees, rocks & water. It's a Canadian Gem, for sure.Celebrities like Martin Short, Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell & others have 'cottages' in the area.
The property is perched up high and there are great views of cottage country.
The vibe is uber comfy, right down to the huge fireplaces, the cushy chairs in the lounge, the excellent local art scattered throughout the rooms, hallways & lobbies. I would return here in a minute. The facilities include an Italian restaurant 'Teca' and a more casual spot 'Cottages'.
Teca is a tad pricey, but hotels usually are. I'd recommend making a reservation in advance to avoid disappointment. We had room service for breakfast, as the buffet was too busy and we didn't make a reservation earlier. Room service was great and probably faster service than the busy restaurant in the morning.
Bathrooms are very spacious and luxurious. I love the separate area for the shower & toilet. Very nice Canadian marble, or granite. Beautiful double sinks & huge mirror. High quality towels & bedding. Our bed had a total of 9 pillows on it...
Even though it was March Break, we were still able to have a romantic birthday getaway by timing our meals for later at night.
We were able to buy 2 nights, midweek for $299. With this, we got a $100 credit to use in the spa or towards our food. Five star place for a song. Watch for it on Groupon, Living Social and TravelZoo.

Room Tip: In winter, it doesn't matter which side of hotel you are located on. In summer, you might prefer...

I stayed at this hotel in a suite with three friends this February. I can't imagine how beautiful this property is in the summer! It was a great winter destination - although the drive through the snow was a little perilous. Underground valet parking was prohibitively expensive and the parking lot was quite a walk from the hotel and at the bottom of a hill, so a very chilly walk!!

The hotel itself has a lot to offer, nice restaurants, a lovely spa and great pool and gym. There were many activities to choose from throughout the day - we went skating and attended a wine tasting session. There was a fire going out front and we spent some time bundled up drinking wine around the fire in the comfy Muskoka chairs. We considered going snowshoeing or dogsledding but preferred to enjoy cocktails at the bar instead and do some people watching.

The rooms are quite lovely - ours was a one bedroom king suite and we took full advantage of the kitchen preparing breakfast and lunch in our room. Bed was very comfortable, and we had a pull out couch which was not too awful. The bathroom looked amazing - but the shower never seemed to get hot enough and the toilet flush was so loud it sounded like a plane taking off which was disruptive at night.

The hotel staff were all very nice and accommodating. They brought us extra robes to our room and gave us dessert on the house at Teca (one of the restaurants) when our meals took a particularly long time to arrive. The food was excellent.

The best part of our stay was swimming in the outdoor pool under the moon. The steam rising from the water and fluffy snowflakes falling made it a magical experience. The outdoor hot tub was great too!

The pool and spa areas had some rusty fixtures and wear and tear which was unfortunate because these little things really stood out against the rest of the hotel which felt very new.

I am considering booking a weekend for my family - I think my kids would really enjoy this hotel!

This review was based on the Family Day weekend.
The Good:
The 'good' is that many of the issues that I noted in my prior review have been corrected. Check-in was quick and the door staff was organized, pleasant and efficent in both helping guest to their rooms and keeping the vehicles from impeding the flow of guests in and out. The concierge desk in the lobby now handles all of the free activity gear such as skates and snow shoes. You just have to sign a waiver. The staff now seem to have little issue handling the hoardes of guests.
We did not try the restaurant again after the last time. Instead we elected to bring our own food and take advantage of the kitchen facilities in a 2 bedroom. I saw quite a few families with groceries so I suspect more than a few were doing likewise. Credit to the JW for giving families the fexibility.
Other good things were the variety of activies. We tried snow shoeing. Skating was available as was the usual trip to the pool. Children also tried the scavenger hunt. A small games room was available. You still have to ask the conceirge for a DVD player. Missed the spa this time out. I believe you must book dog sledding in advance.
The Bad:
This time I really do not have anything to offer in this category. If I had to be really granular, I would only suggest that they clean the lobby more frequently to prevent slips with wet areas and have the shuttle on standby more to take guests down and back to the parking lot.
Overall:
A marked improvement from the last review in 2011 (we also came back in 2012, but I skipped the review that year).

Room Tip: Try to get a room as far from the elevator as you can. It is nice to have a lake view.

My wife and I took advantage of a group buy deal this February 2013. We found the hotel to be above our expectations on all fronts. Location was gorgeous the amenities were excellent the spa was serene and lovely and our room was spacious luxurious yet still cozy. The bathroom made my wife drool with envy (our bathroom at home doesn't come close to the luxury provided) and the kitchenette and gas fireplace added a very nice touch as did the bedding towels and comfortable seating. The lobby was spacious and inviting and the staff were very helpful. We snowshoed spent time at the spa, swam, hot tubbed and had a wonderful adult only weekend.
Without the group buy it would have been quite expensive. And the summer rates are even more. But this deal was simply too good to pass up on.

Fantastic weekend with the family at the JW Marriott in Muskoka. The hotels reception, concierge and restaurant staff were both kind and efficient. The hotel does offer valet parking for a fee of $30 but we decided to opt with taking the self serve parking option which is free. The self serve parking lot is located a few minute walk from the hotel and is quite convenient. There are hotel staff in the self serve parking lot to assist you with luggage. We had a studio two queen bed room with a partial lake view. The room was very large, with a warm cottage vibe. The washroom is massive with a detached toilet area and separate shower stall. The kitchenette was well equipped with a toaster, pots and pans and etc. The kids very much enjoyed the indoor/outdoor pool and the outdoor whirlpool. The fitness centre we found to be average for most hotels. For dinner we ate at cottages, which was a little slow (took a hour for our main course to arrive) but the food was excellent. If you are staying at this hotel I would highly recommend making reservations for the two major dining options (Teca or Cottages). We learned this the hard way, but we did manage to pick up a cancellation at the 8:30 dinning time. Overall this was a fantastic trip and will most definitely return in the near future.
