“Gorgeous location and accomodations - food a bit disappointing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2009

We spent a beautiful fall weekend at Manoir Hovey - We stayed in one of their most luxurious cottages and it was really gorgeous - bathroooms out of a Hollywood set, comfortable beds, beautiful views. Very private. The dinners were a bit disappointing. All of the food was very good - but not spectacular, which was what we expected. There were a few dishes that would earn A plus ratings - a scallop appetizer, for example, but the rest were very good but not amazing. The presentation was perfect - so I give them A plus for that - each plate was truly artistic, but tastewise, did not knock our socks off. There were also some minor but annoying service lapses. The first night, we asked for our table to be moved because of a very loud piano player and one of our party has hearing problems. They did this graciously. When we set the time for dinner for night two, I made a point of telling the reservations desk that we needed to be sat as far as possible from the piano again. They put us once again at a table near the piano. The hostess realized after she saw us that she should have made that change automatically, but to her credit, no one in the reservations area communicated this to her beforehand. Other small things - one night we waited 15 minutes for water and had to ask for it. One member of our party asked for the same glass of wine as another at the table and was brought something different. The same mixed drink was charged at a different amount on two different nights. One night our bottle of wine was removed to another location and the waiter was supposed to bring it over and refill glasses and came over to pour the last glasses when we were already eating dessert. On both nights, when we asked for decaf coffee, when the server came over and started pouring and we checked, it was not decaf. All of the service staff was pleasant and extremely willing to please, so no complaints there. but there definitely seemed to be communication issues in the dining room. While these are all small issues, it's not what you would expect from a Relais and Chateaux property.
There were some small issues at our cottage barely worth mentioning but again, this is supposed to represent "perfection" in accomodations. There was a bag of granola and a wrapped bottle of maple syrup on the sideboard when we came in. There was no note to indicate if this was a gift (which would have probably been appropriate given how much we paid for our accomodation) or if we would have to pay if we took them. We had to ask at the desk (Yes there would be a charge for these, the girl at the desk said there "should" have been information specifying this but there was not. ) Also, although this was a large 2 bedroom suite, there were only two small coffee cups - that was it -- I wouldn't say that is adequate for 4 guests. I think it needed to be stocked a little more generously. Again, little issues but not what you would expect.

Having just visited the Manoir Hovey last month, we were somewhat amused at a previous
post that suggested the Hovey was "Pricey, but worth an infrequent splurge".

As we often visit the hotels of Relais & Chateau, we were amazed to the find the
rates at Hovey among the lowest of any of their listed properties both here in Canada and worldwide. Add to this their virtually all-inclusive offering, and Hovey "is s steal".

Having just returned from a four-night visit to New York City, our hotel rate alone was
$740 nightly, sans taxes. In this context, we hope to return to the Hovey for Canadian
Thanksgiving.

..Been going to Hovey for years and prices have creeped up. Excellent for an infrequent splurge (once every two years). Service is phenomenal; food is excellent; wine list excellent but very pricey; setting is the epitomy of R E L A X I N G. Treat yourself; you'll be glad you did.

From the front desk staff and the wait staff to the immaculately kept grounds, very comfortable room and wonderful food, Hovey Manor did not disappoint. Charming and gracious without being pretentious, I can certainly see why it was awarded the prestigious Relais et Chateau status. The setting on Lake Massawippi is magical and the amenities perfect. We spent only one night here following a five day biking trip in the Townships but will most certainly look forward to returning for a longer period when time permits. A very special place!

My husband and I spent 2 nights here and it truly is as beautiful as it is pictured on the web. The grounds and gardens are lovely, the pool area is very nice and the lake is very picturesque and there are canoes, kayaks and paddle boats for guests to use.

Our room was very pleasant and charming although somewhat dated, especially the bathroom which is overdue for a reno with dated tile and fixtures. We had a lovely balcony overlooking the lake and grounds. It has very nice wicker furniture and we loved to sit out with our morning coffee or in the evenings.

The real downside to the room was the mattress which was thin, lumpy and hard. After driving from Western Canada and staying in Best Westerns and Travelodges along the way, I can tell you that those types of places all have brand new, high quality pillowtop mattresses and a "menu" of pillows to choose from. If the 3-star chain hotels understand that the most important thing is a good sleep it makes it hard to understand why a place of this calibre does not have newer upgraded mattresses and pillows. Both my husband and I woke up with sore backs each day.

The food was excellent and I won't comment too much about that because neither of us are real "foodies" so probably don't really appreciate it as much as we should. I doubt you could go hungry here, in fact my waistband was feeling tight after just two days.

The best thing about this resort is most definitely the staff. Polished and very anxious to please, the service is just outstanding.

We would definitely like to return here someday. I hope they have new mattresses by then.

I was delighted to read how much you enjoyed your recent stay with us. However, your comments about a poor mattress have left us a bit baffled and concerned. Manoir Hovey offers much more than 'a room for the night' but we couldn't agree more that bed comfort is fundamental. We do not know which room you stayed in but have been rechecking all mattresses and have not found one that was hard or lumpy. Out mattresses are continuously checked and we order only the very top quality mattresses for all room categories. Some have pillowtops and some do not according to our guests' preferences.
With regard to 'dated tiles and fixtures', you may have stayed in one of the original rooms of the historic Manor House where new tiles and plumbing fixtures are chosen to complement the character of the building.
We note that you would like to return and we will be delighted if you express any concerns you may have about mattress comfort when you reserve so we can ensure the right mattress for you. Thank you for taking the time to write your review.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2009

I've looked at the Manoir Hovey web site for the past two years. Thought it was a bit pricey for someone with two kids in college, but it looked wonderful. We finally made it up to Quebec in July and it was everything we could have hoped for.

Now granted, I really like my husband of 26 years. We parked the car and didn't drive it for 4 days. We canoed around Lake Massawippi, we paddle boated around Lake Massawippi, we bicycled around Lake Massawippi. We had cocktails on our lovely balcony overlooking Lake Massawippi. And we ate the most fabulous food we have EVER HAD AT ANY INN OR HOTEL in a lovely dining room ... overlooking Lake Massawippi.

And there were no children.

The room was magnificent - I wouldn't mind moving in, assuming I could eat there twice a day. My husband is a chef and culinary concept person for a major chain of organic ("whole") food stores. His food is amazing, and he is extremely hard to please. Poor food quality has ruined many a vacation (after this I am going to write my "pork tartare review" of the Balsams). But even he was amazed by the food at Manoir Hovey. And the person who said in their review that they left hungry? I cannot imagine. The only downside of the week is that I gained 3 pounds. But I found the concept of the dessert AFTER the dessert just divine.

And there were no children.

So if you want to get away with someone you don't mind spending a lot of time with (READ: THERE ISN'T MUCH TO DO THERE), you will love the place. Go with someone you can talk to every night over a two hour dinner. And a one hour breakfast. And a long paddle around the lake. We'll be back, most definitely. Bring on the chocolate.

Did I mention: there were no children? :)

Hovey Manor is just beautiful and breathtaking!
We stayed for two nights and we enjoyed it a lot. The site is really beautiful with historic buildings, wonderful gardens and beaches at Lake Massawippi. The main building reminds me to an antebellum building from the south and the ambience would be perfect for a setting for "The great Gatsby".
We got a room at the Lemoyne Building, a short walk from the main building. Our room was spacious and we had a wonderful view over the lake from the veranda as well as from our room. The furnishings were nice, but in the case of our room there is space for improvement.
The restaurant (dinner and breakfast are included) is extremely good. I dont know when i have eaten as good as here before. The staff is very helpful and kind.
We used many of the offered amenities as the pool, bicycles, a boat and my wife took a horseback riding lesson (surcharge).
Hovey Manor is pricey, but taking into account that the dinner, the breakfast and almost all amenities on the site are included it is a very reasonable price and definitely worth it.
We are looking to come back as soon as possible!
