“Clean and spacious family lodgings”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2013

This was a stop-over stay on our way through to Montreal. We needed a cheap place to stay to break up the driving over two days. We booked using an online service, but I wish I had called to confirm the details directly. We arrived after midnight and the kids were asleep. At first, they weren't going to give us the rate we had booked for, but luckily I had an app for the booking service on my phone to prove that I had booked a much lower price. The family room was spacious and clean, though a bit dated and there was some peeling paint in the bathroom. Overall a good value for budget traveling with a young family.

I traveled here solo while driving to Cape Breton quite some time back - I did not ever have a TripAdvisor account but created one only to leave a review for this place. Firstly, the rooms are overpriced. The quality of the rooms is very low - and I do not see it as a problem for a bachelor who simply needs a place to crash for maybe $30 a night - but other than that they are terrible. When checking in the proprietor (the agent at the desk was the owner) took my information and allowed me to pay cash. He claimed to lower the rate just for me but he charged me a rate comparable to other places in town at a much lower quality. He charged me a high price for a very small Indian dish and also $6 for a cup of tea. Really. Just hot water and a tea bag. Which are usually free. The service upfront was good, and he perpetually reminded me that he cared very much for the customer. Despite what he said, he was moody and rude as if he expected a pat on the back for everything that he had done - which as explained above was insane: $6 for tea and a room that smelled like mould! I could understand this situation if he was reviving a bad motel - however after speaking with locals in Woodstock area, it was much nicer with the former owner. Avoid at all costs! Pay the higher prices - it is worth it.

Room Tip: Stop in Hartland or continue to Fredericton.

Below is a fax that we received in response to this review as witnessed by a customer who was present when JohnWosley came to rent a room. Please read below:

I am writing this in reply to a recent critical and UNTRUE review of Stiles Motel, Woodstock, New Brunswick by a man from Churchill. I happened to be in the motel dining area at the time this person came into the office looking for a room, and I overheard the entire conversation between the customer and the owner. The customer was on his way to Cape Breton and was looking for a room for $30.00. He made it very clear that he just wanted to sleep and was not willing to pay more than $30.00 for the room. The owner explained to him that he could not give him a room for that price. The price he offered him was $59.99 plus tax. A very reasonable price for the off-season. The customer again said he was not willing to pay more than $30.00 for the room. The owner offered to show him the rooms, but he refused. He said he could get a room in Fredericton for $30, and that was all he could afford to pay. Again the owner reiterated that he was unable to rent him a room for $30.00. The customer was quite upset that he could not get the room for that price. Finally, the owner said, “If you can get a room for $30 in Fredericton, then perhaps you should go to Fredericton.” When the customer realized he was not going to get the room for $30, he left. He did not spend the night in the motel, he did not go into any of the room, and he did not eat or drink anything while he was here. He may have gone downtown and spoken to the local people about his experience, but any opinion they gave him is, or should be, beyond the scope of a Trip Advisor review. He obviously did not know that Stiles Motel had just been voted (and won) Silver in the motel/hotel category by local readers in the Readers’ Choice award of our local newspaper, The Bugle Observer. It was second only to the Best Western. He said in his review dated March 12, 2013, that this incident happened last year. It did not. It happened very recently, and I remembered the incident the minute I read the details of the review. To demand a room for $30.00 in this day and age is ridiculous. You can’t get a space in a trailer park for that price! In my opinion, Trip Advisor should monitor this site a little more, and remove reviews such as this one. Stiles Motel is one of the oldest in our Province, but has always provided good clean rooms at a reasonable rate to the travelling public. A review by a disgruntled customer who did not get a room for the price he demanded is hardly qualified to give a review for a business that owes its longevity to satisfied customers.

After reading a few good reviews about this place we were excited to stay as we passed through. After registering and paying for the room Mr. Padda informed us there was no heat/hot water. He refused to give us a refund and essentially forced us to stay, as we were on a budget. When we asked for a coffee/cup of tea (things, I may add are usually complimentary) he of course obliged and then proceeded to charge us $10 for the tea. His skill in the kitchen is good, as is his food, however he is desperate for money and will charge at every turn to make a profit. Lastly, the quality of the rooms is very poor. They are fairly clean but in disrepair. After the stay we regretted coming here, and will drive extra to steer clear of it in the future. Mr. Padda claims he has a high level of service, but in all honesty, he seems to only care about taking your money.

Room Tip: Pick another location to stay.

Dear PCTRIP46, after speaking to Mr. Padda, I find it hard to believe that he would have told you there is no heat and hot water! If there was no heat/hot water, the water pipes in all our units would burst. The heating system is not, and has not been 'down/broken' for as long as I have been a manager at this property. Additionally, you make it sound as if you were held against your will; something that I also find hard to believe as the Police Station is right across the street! With respect to coffee/tea, we have a full restaurant on-site and as such we do not advertise any complimentary tea/coffee. I am sorry for your misunderstanding. Lastly, we were just voted as the SILVER winners in the category of Best Hotels/Motels in Woodstock by readers (second only to Best Western, Woodstock). So I apologize if we did not meet your individual expectations.

Went to the restaurant and was greeted very welcomingly by Mr Padda. we took his advise to try the Indian Platter they had on, The food was really good, full of natural flavour not spices. All the food was organic. The dessert of strawberry & rhubarb pie with ice cream was also really nice. Mr & Mrs Padda were very friendly and kept checking that all was ok. Could not fault anything the place was spotless.

WOULD DEFINATELY RECOMMEND

We found the Stiles Motel while looking for someplace to eat. Tired and hungry, we had resigned ourselves to pizza when we saw the sign: restaurant. Imagine our amazement, and delight, at discovering that first-class Indian food was on the menu! Mr. and Mrs. Padda welcomed us with genuine warmth, we had an excellent dinner prepared by Pam Padda, who graciously honored our request for a vegetarian meal. We decided to stay the night, and even got to enjoy a scrumptious, home-made late night snack. Excellent food, a spotless and reasonably priced room, but what made our visit really memorable was the Paddas' hospitality and kindness.

My sister and I stayed at the Stiles motel for several nights in July this year and will stay there again. Though the motel is older the rooms are comfortable and very clean. The owners, C.J. and his wife were very friendly and accommodating. The location right on Main Street is very convenient. Price was reasonable and because on our final night we had to leave in the wee hours to get to the airport we were given a discount for that night.
The best part was the Indian food. They offer both Canadian and Indian but we had the Indian food every night. Fresh, homemade and delicious! We were happy to support this family business and would encourage the locals to get on board & check out the great Indian food.
It was very hot while we were there so the air conditioning in the room was great but the restaurant was too warm. Perhaps air conditioning there could have been on but they did bring is fans which helped. A coffeemaker in the room would have been nice also.
They do offer both smoking and non-smoking rooms and have pet friendly rooms as well.

All in all, a very pleasant stay. Oh ya, free wifi too.

Thanks to you both for looking after us. See you next year!
