“best price and best place on the hill”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2011

You can't beat the griz. We've stayed at the griz approx 12 times in the past 8 years. It is no big deal walking a very short distance to get our lift tickets. The ski rental in the basement is excellent and the guys there really know their stuff. Literally a few steps out the front door and you put your skis on---- a few strides later you are at Elk Chair. Nice pool. 2 hot tubs are outside. The rooms come in all sizes and decor as many are privately owned it seems so there are some better decorated than others. Would not stay anywhere else as the other on hill hotels are much more expensive.

Our family just finished a great spring ski trip to Fernie. We had originally planned to stay in town but the hotel we stayed in last time was full and they recommended their other property they run up at the ski area. The Griz Inn was offering a spring special rate so it wasn’t that much more money to book plus we thoght the kids would enjoy staying right at the ski hill. We stayed in a one bedroom unit which also had a loft. The unit was a bit older but it was clean, the beds were quite comfortable and having a full kitchen was a nice bonus. The highlight for the kids was the pool and being able to ski right to the hotel. The highlight for us parents was not having to use our car for four days! We literally parked the SUV behind the hotel, unloaded our gear into the room and forgot about it. Skiing was right out the door and we walked to get our tickets, ski rentals as well as a few meals up on the mountain. We also used the shuttle bus to go into town for shopping as well as a movie and dinner one night. Overall, we were quite pleased with the Griz Inn, the staff were very friendly, the room was comfortable, the restaurant was quite good (try the Goulash), and the guy in the ski shop downstairs (Brian?) sold me the first pair of ski boots that didn’t hurt my feet. Although we didn’t ski any famous Fernie powder, the sun was out the whole time and conditions on the mountain were great.. Still our favourite ski area!

Went for 2 nights in early Feb. 4 adults and a baby in a 2 bedroom condo. Units are quite dated but very clean and the full kitchen is well-stocked with everything you need for cooking. Price was right, and the hotel is located at the base of the ski hill so you ski right to the hotel at the end of your ski day. Free wireless internet. If you're looking for good value this is the place.

I travelled to Fernie with my Dad for a ski weekend and we were booked else where at first. Central booking moved us to the Griz in and put us in a basement room that was one of the worst hotel rooms I have ever been in. The shower was tiny, the sink wasn't in the bathroom but in the main room and the two double beds turned out to be one bed and a murphy bed. When the murphy bed was pulled out there was zero extra room in the room. The room was also located across the hall from a room labeled the 'Dungeon'. The room we were put in also was much less expensive per night then the one we paid for even after the 30% discount they gave us for moving.

Ski in -Ski out is a bit of a misnomer when you have to walk up to the guest services buildings to get your tickets and rentals. Only used the ski in once and never used the ski out.

The only saving grace for this Inn was the attached Cornerstone Restaurant. The breakfast was a rip-off, but lunch and dinner were reasonable and quality food. The Front Desk staff were also stellar at sorting out our room issues and moving us the second night to a new room and a later check out.

Overall I would suggest staying in town and not at the hill since the parking lots are just as close to the hill as the hotels.

Dear Sir or Madam:

Thank you for taking the time to review the Griz Inn and for your kind words regarding our Guest Services Team. We are pleased that you recognized our commitment to providing friendly and courteous service to our guests.

We apologize for the room type your booking agent placed you in as a result of having to be relocated. These units are compact but comfortable and are intended to appeal to the budget-conscious traveler looking for ski-in, ski-out accommodation. We are happy to hear that our Guest Services Team was able to address your concerns and upgrade you to a 1-bedroom suite.

With respect to our location, the resort ticket office and rental shop are a short walk from the property. Ski-in, ski-out access to the Elk Chairlift is direct from the hotel front entrance. The hotel also has a ski equipment rental shop located on-site.

We are sorry that your last visit to Fernie did not meet your expectations. We do hope that you will reconsider and that we may be of service to you in the future.

Okay I will say a few good things first. It is convenient. It is relatively clean. It is cheap. But very sparse. Only 4 plates, forks, knives, spoons etc.....VERY, VERY poorly equipped kitchens, no sharp knives, not even a dish drainer! Water was not hot enough to have a bath. VERY tight quarters, you could not pull the chairs out from the table when the sofa bed was out. BAD 70's furnishings. Hard beds--sofa bed was horrible. Flat, hard pillows, stained scratchy towells. Even the soap didn't work properly! Food is poor quality in the restaurant. I would rather pay double for a good quality stay. I would only recommend this hotel to someone I don't like.
