“Indifferent service, poor room.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2011

Our family stayed here for two nights while visiting the Granby zoo. We were forced to wait over 90 minutes to check in -- while watching other guests do so and receiving absolutely indifferent if not rude replies from front desk staff -- and the room we finally got had a balcony that directly faced the restaurant rooftop complete with exhaust from the fume hood. The room had not been updated in some time and there was significant detrioration of the shower tiles. We tried to get breakfast at the cafe in the basement -- not only ws it cafeteria style but the lineup was at least 30 people deep, so we gave up.

The pool was OK and the lifeguards there were the only pleasant staff we encountered.

Room Tip: If you must stay here, book a package even though they are poor value.

Arrived mid evening after a long day in Toronto, flying into Montreal & driving from there.
Hotel was clean, warm and welcoming & staff were very friendly - even to a uni-lingual Anglo like me.
They'd run out of exec rooms when I booked online but without any real expectation I'd put in a request to upgrade if one became available - it had & they had a very nice one ready .
After checking in I asked if there was anywhere close I could still get someting to eat at that time of night & they said their small restaurant/bar across the lobby could cook something .
Great room to walk into - very friendly waitress who was happy to serve me, warm & comfortable room with a big gas fireplace that made it cozy on a bitterly cold night and a really good steak & frites with a glass of wine. Very good experience.
Excellent small business hotel - bed was comfortable & room very clean + location was central & a five minute drive from my morning meeting.
Only downside was the very strange basement cafetria in which they serve breakfast - an institutional self serve place reminiscent of ferries & railway stations - where they sold small boxes of cereal & cartons of milk & fried eggs & bacon to order. Still wondering why they didn't just serve normal breakfasts in the restaurant upstairs...

Room Tip: Ask nicely

I have stayed at the Hotel Castel several times while visiting Granby over the years. The location is ideal on the Rue Principale. The rooms are a good value and are always kept clean. The staff is always friendly, even if your French is not that great and you prefer to speak in English. I've asked the front desk for items that I forgot to pack and they are always willing to assist in any way that they can. There is a nice restaurant and small bar with a pool table located just off the lobby. There is also an SAQ liquor store a few feet away from the side entrance and a mall across the street from the hotel. The Hotel Castel is also walking distance to many restaurants. I plan to stay here next time I'm in town.

My husband and I booked this hotel for a romantic getaway. We were quoted a price of $289( and reserved by credit card) for a one night stay with 5 course dinner and breakfast included. We showed up on the appointed day only to discover that the price was now $339 + taxes. A difference of almost $60. When we asked for an explanation, the front desk staff said they had no idea what had happened. They declined to meet us halfway and would not even throw in a miserable bottle of wine to compensate us for our trouble. The staff were not helpful and the manager, which could only be reached by phone, replied that we had till 4:00 pm to cancel and book elsewhere if we were not happy! What a terrible attitude. They clearly didn't care if they had our business or not. Good friends of ours were booked for 2 days the following weekend and decided to cancel based on our eexperience.

Glad to say we took our business elsewhere and got a comparable deal at the newer and better appointed St-Christophe for $279! Buyer beware, make sure that you have written confirmation of the price by e-mail before you give your credit card number....they are crooks!

Booked for one night for a business trip. Smooth check-in, my english language was not a problem - desk staff were quite comfortable with both languages. Clean, well maintained room. Comfortable bed. Good toiletries including a disposable toothbrush! TV has local cable not the 'hotel' cable that many have. There were no instructions on how to access the wireless internet from the room. A call to the front desk solved the problem. French doors to a small balcony were nice (I like open windows for fresh air). Hotel is beside several shopping centres, a liquor store (SAQ), and near to several restuarants. A pleasant experience.

I am regularly staying at this hotel for work. And here are my pros and cons for this place:
Pros:
-Frontdesk staff very helpful and friendly
-Very good food from hotel restaurant
-Rooms always clean
-Heated pool in nice "backyard"
-Located right in front of a mall
-Newly installed gym equipment
-Clean bathroom
-"Free" table pool
-Allow for late check-out

Cons:
-Maids not always do their jobs well (ie: forget to fill soap or shampoo supplies and expect you to tip when you ask for it)
-Rooms not well isolated. you can hear everything, and i mean, everything!
-Crappy looking balcony
-Small pool (5 people and you feel it's too crowded)
-Gym has only one little window, and it's facing a wall (and did i mention the only other decoration in this room is a green painting of two ducks?)
-Unstable internet connection depending on room

In all, nice and decent place to stay in. Not my taste of decor, but well worth the money.

The staff are friendly. The room are of a typical standard i.e. Plenty big enough , two beds, clean, effiecient shower.
The bar is a nice place to spend some time. Happy hours and a good selection of food. The crazy thing is that children whilst being allowed in the bar, are not allowed to play the pool table!!
The swimming pool is much needed in the height of summer. The rooms are comfortably warm during winter.
The location is fantastic - there is a large shopping mall behind the hotel. You can walk to many restaurants in a few minutes. The Pub Amboise and the Sports Bar are a five minute stroll, serving excellent food and have a great atmosphere. A C£10 taxi rid takes you down town.
I have not tried the main hotel restaurant but only because I dont eat in hotels as a rule. Last and by no means least, I paid C$70 a night. Great value!
