“Perfect!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2010

This bed and breakfast was amazing! The hosts are gracious and thoughtful but allow you your privacy. They provided us with great information on restaurants and hikes in the area, as well as a homecooked breakfast of pancakes, hot muffins and scones, fresh fruit salad, eggs, tea, coffee, juice...

The rooms were beautiful and comfortable with down bedding and pillows, nice linens, well decorated in soft colors with a luxurious antique feel. The gardens and fishing pond evoke English country gardens with blooms everywhere.

Sooke was quiet but a relaxing retreat which was still convenient for trips around the Island and only 20 mins outside of Victoria.

The room, the beds, the bath were all perfectly comfortable. The owners were attentive but not hovering. The food was delicious and above average. The table was set with beautiful china in a beautiful room. I didn't expect blueberry pancakes and omelets and scones.

The distance from Victoria was perfect for a relaxing sleep, very quiet and peaceful. I would go back and my friend agrees.

We stayed at the Honeysuckle Cottage and as a couple with our 9 month old baby and this was a perfect get away. We brought our own travel cot, and there was plenty of room for the 3 of us. A perfect mix of privacy and great service, the only thing that would have helped is a bath for our son, but we made do. Sally was particularly friendly and even when my husband forgot his cufflinks they were able to accommodate! I had organized this as a special birthday get away and was really impressed with the breakfasts and the attention to detail, like bringing in more firewood for us so we wouldn't have to search in the dark. They also had a bbq on the patio so we took advantage (as a lot of the restaurants in the winter are only open certain days, so check with the B&B ahead of time) but it made it all the more special having a cozy winters night in! We took advantage of being in the area to eat at Sooke Harbour House Restaurant - service, food and atmosphere was out of this world - I had been slightly warned off by islanders on the ferry over (as it was on the pricer side) that it was a bit stuffy and pretentious but it was nothing of the sort and I'm so glad we went. They were particularly good with our young son and there was so much art work and beautiful things to occupy a curious child!
All in all a very good stay, they are thinking of selling up however so I would highly recommend getting in there quickly to take advantage of the peace and tranquility, we hope to return soon!

We spent 5 nights at Honeysuckle Cottage, Markham House as guest of Lyle and Sally.
Our accomodation was just beautiful. A secluded cottage in the grounds of this beautiful house and surrounding gardens. A great deal of thought and care has gone into the cottage, from the huge comfy sofa, the big fuffy towels and dressing gowns down to the fairy lights by the hot tub on the deck outside. Everything you would want at home is here. Sally's breakfasts were absolutely delicious and memorable, arriving each morning in a beautiful wicker basket. Fresh baked muffins and scones, homemade granola, fresh fruit salad, omlets, blueberry pankcakes every morsel just delicious. Honeysuckle cottage is just the perfect base for exploring the south west part of Vancouver Island if you can drag yourself away from the cottage.

I travelled to Sooke for a family re-union and stayed with my sister at the Markham House B & B. It was just perfect. From the rooms to the grounds, you really couldn't ask for better accomodations. Everything was great - the beds were very comfy, nice touches such as robes & slippers, CD's and DVD's. The grounds are spectacular; chipping practice area for golfer's, lovely outdoor hot tub for relaxing and beautiful gardens. The breakfast's were delicious. Fresh made scones or muffins, fresh fruit, hot coffee, juice and that is just the start! The hosts were delightful and I would not hesitate to recommend this B & B to anyone.

We stayed in the lovely Honeysuckle Cottage for 2 days during our time in Sooke and enjoyed every moment. The location is perfect - close to trails for hiking, biking, and running. The accommodations were welcoming and impeccably clean. Sally and Lyall were great hosts and Virgil the dog was an added bonus. If you like quiet, beautiful grounds, terrific breakfasts, and an easy, laid place - Markham House is for you! Two thumbs up!

Our stay with Sally and Lyall, not forgetting Virgil, was one of the highlights of a lifetime of travel experiences. You will enjoy your stay from the moment you pass through the rustic gates to the final mouthwatering breakfast and your farewell. The Tudor style antique filled house is set in spacious and well kept gardens with a forest backdrop. Highlights were tea taken on the terrace over looking the small lake from a silver teapot in bone china cups, the amazing double if not triple bed, three golf tees onto the main lawn, relaxing in the garden after a day out sightseeing or walking, the luxurious jacuzzi, the tremendous welcome and continuing help and advice from Sally and Lyall when planning daily activities including the production of maps of different areas.
The breakfasts were a gourmet's dream with different flavoured scones and muffins to treat any palate! Sally even provided copies of recipes to try to reproduce at home! The eating places they recommended were all excellent value and within a five km car ride. The area is fairly spread out and a car is essential. It is within easy reach of both Victoria and the Butchard Gardens and also Port Refrew and various points along the Juan de Fuca trail. A walk from the head of the Trail from China Beach to Mystic Beach is an adventure in itself with the added piquancy of being in a habitat frequented by black bear and cougar!
Markham House is more expensive than most of the B&Bs we have stayed in but we would say that it was worth every cent - if not more!
