We were with Rollie for 6 hours recently on a salmon charter. We did catch 4 salmon and 2 crabs and we were very pleased with that. Rollie definitely knows the waters and does his best to ensure that you take home some great catches.
However, we were not impressed with his "bedside manner." We were very upfront with him that 3 out of 4 of us had never really fished before. Instead of showing us a rod and reel and ensuring we understand how it works before the pressure was on in the heat of the moment, he instead asked my 11 year old on his first catch "are you an old lady? Are you 80? Reel faster!" My son had never operated a fishing rod in his life and was genuinely doing his best. Rollie ended up taking the rod right out of his hands and showing him how fast he himself can do it. As if an 11 year old should be able to do it exactly like that on his first try.
When it was my turn to reel in a catch Rollie said "let go of the line" so I did exactly that. The line snapped out and tangled and the ensuing expletives were not appreciated. Rollie then told my father-in-law that he better reel this one in also (he'd already gotten the only 2 fish so far). My son never did get to reel one in.
When Rollie got his own lines snagged on a crab trap, he came flying into the cabin of the boat literally almost yelling "move, move, I need in the cabinet under you." I moved as fast as humanly possible, yet Rollie put his hands on my leg and shoved my leg aside. It was very inappropriate. We recognized his lack of bedside manner the second he didn't even offer us a hand getting onto his boat. Instead, my father-in-law boarded first and stood there helping us all get on safely. Rollie's first words to us were "good morning, this is MY area here, do not get in the way."
It was very clear that HE was fishing and we were just lucky he allowed us to pay $550 to be with him.
