“Wonderful Service at an Accomodating Price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2011

Nestled in the heart of the Laurention Mountains in Val David Quebec, The Auberge du Vieux Foyer Hotel offers a CLEAN comfortable place at a reasonable price. I stayed for the last 2 nights for a work retreat and the stay was great. They have nice facilities with a mixture of the central hotel and various "houses" for accommodations.

The restaurant serves a nice Quebecois style menu with a nice flair. The always had a lot of nice fresh home made bread for each meal and the highlight for me was a steak on one evening and scallops at another sitting.

They offer an outdoor hot tub, an exercise room, and a games room.

Although I didn't try their Spa I was told it was great.

All in all a nice experience at a reasonable price.

Room Tip: I stayed in room 132 which is a modern king sized room with a whirlpool bath. No view but It was qu...

We snuck away for a long weekend at Auberge du Vieux Foyer. We are not skiers, but went for rest & relaxation. The surrounding grounds are quaint and Swiss-like and there is a fireplace with comfy furniture, a piano and games outside the lobby area, nice to sit and read or socialize. We had no problems with checking in or out and the staff is helpful and accommodating when they can be. The Spa area is beautiful and the services offered are superb.

We stayed in a 'deluxe room' in a separate building with an entrance that also has a fireplace with comfy furniture. We had to walk over to the main building for our meals, which was no problem. The room was cramped and could use updating in its furnishings. The television (12 cable channels) and coffee machine are ancient. The air conditioner/fan unit is practically on the bed. The french doors to access the outside patio add a nice touch to the room. The fireplace is a heater and the flames only come on when heating the room, so don't expect a continuous ambient flame. It works very well though and the room can get quite warm. The bathroom is not spacious by any means. The spa bath tub looks like a child's swimming pool, but once you get in, it's actually not too bad if you don't mind just sitting still in your corner. The showerhead is on the wall above the tub and curtains close around it when you want to shower. The toiletry products are nice like Pantene and Dove, but the bubble bath brand is "Voyageur" and we would not subject our skin to it. I suggest your bring your own bubbles ... and candles :) ... if you get a room with a spa bath.

The food is fantastic! We had some meals included in our package and some we paid a la carte at very reasonable prices. No matter what we ordered, the dishes are well presented and spot on delicious. The Sunday Brunch is superb, with something for everyone's taste. The Brunch dessert table is as yummy to look at as it is to eat! Un gros Merci to the Chef and the kitchen staff.

The problem we had was that the Fred Flintstone television remote was not working and we tried for two days to get another one from the front desk. We were told there were no extras available and that it would be looked into. When we received no news the next day, we were told they had not received the message that our remote wasn't working and would look into it. When we still had no news the next day, we were told that there were 20 on order, but they had not come in yet. Then we were told that there were many non-functioning and missing remotes in the rooms and that if enough people complained about it, maybe the admin. would do something about it. First time we see guests have to gang up to get a simple remote. Of course it's not the end of the world to change channels manually, but they should just dump these old sets and modernize with flat screens and real cable.

Also, the walls and doors are thin and we could hear people mulling around in the hallways and our neighbors' televisions, phones ringing and conversations. It did hinder our naps and nights somewhat.

*All in all, a nice place to stay if you want to kick back and be pampered with wonderful food and a great massage.*

I spent two nights at the Auberge du Vieux Foyer on a work retreat with approximately 25 other colleagues. The facilities were great - my room was big, clean, modern and bright. The food was good, and the staff were friendly.

I had never been to this area of Quebec, but it was beautiful. I would definitely stay there again if I ever head up that way!

Food was superb, traditional French-Canadian cusine was excellent like sugar pie, steak, shrimp, great Cesar salad, some odd combinations on the menu like Pina Colada chicken, and anise creme brulee (why anise?) however sticking to standard preparations of striploin steak and filet mignon was excellent....even the veg was perfectly cooked. Often the edible "dessert bowls" for sorbet are at best passable, however, even the pasty bowl was excellent! Breakast choices included standard American plus fresh bread, home-made jams, yogourt, cereal, juice all-included. Portion-size was generous for all meals.

Hotel is very clean but out of date. Rooms are very basic and had difficulty controlling heat and humidity. Pull-out hide-a-bed was typically, not that comfortable, for our pre-teen.

Service was very good...helpful, pleasant, accomodating with minor menu requests for our 8 yr old. Nordic (aka cross-country ski) passes included in the price was an added bonus. Great access to vast ski network.

Overall, if you are into food, great value for $, accomodations were fine but definitely not luxury.

The renovated rooms are spacious, nicely decorated and very clean. The food is excellent -- breakfast and 4-service dinner -- but service was very slow at dinner. The Auberge is close to a great network of cross-country skiing/biking trails (Parc Dufresne). All in all, I felt welcomed and enjoyed my stay there.

We just returned from four days and a wonderful stay at the Auberge du Vieux Foyer. Attentive and friendly service, delicious and beautifully presented dinners, filling breakfasts and cross country skiing from the door were just a few of its great features. A newly finished spa was very welcome after a strenuous day on the trails and the rooms were spotlessly clean if a bit small. We intend to return especially as the price was reasonable.
