“What a little gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2013

We'd been meaning to try this little bistro for some time after several recommendations. As you'll note, I've been fairly negative on most restaurants in the Qualicum Beach area. This charming bistro was a very definite positive experience. Small, intimate, great charm but most importantly, a beautiful meal that was delicious and well presented. My husband ordered the pork medallions and I reluctantly ordered the special "lamb shoulder". We were not disappointed - beautifully crisp vegetables, succulent tender pork and lamb in a delectable demi glace. Our server Miranda was delightful. This is what a good restaurant should be - excellent food and service. And why this restaurant will continue to do well - not only in the tourist season but year round for the local residents who really appreciate this tiny gem.

“consistently good”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2013

Have enjoyed the warmth of the good service as well as the outstanding crab cakes and the soups are right up there as the best. Have had the tomato basil and the mushroom leek, both outstanding. A lovely place to enjoy both lunch and dinner. Thank you for having such a great place to dine.

“Crab cakes are amazing!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

I have been to Bistro 694 a few times, each and every time I've been very pleased with my meals. I have had the crab cakes and believe they are the best crab cakes I've ever tasted! All the meals have been delicious, the service friendly. I will continue to recommend this restaurant to friends and family.

“Highlight of our visit to Qualicum Beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

Bistro 694 was suggested by our hostess at Whitley House B&B. We got the last table on a Friday night (recommend reservations for this popular gem). The entire dining experience was delightful; attentive service without being oppressive; the caesar salad was dressed to perfection, the crab cakes were tasty and moist; the butter chicken was delicious. The dining room is intimate without feeling crowded. We would highly recommend this outstanding restaurant.

“Just excellent ...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013

Probably what we most appreciated about this meal was the standard of the food, but so much else was good too. The menu has been kept deliberately small to make the best of locally available ingredients and the chef's skill in making the best of his ingredients is outstanding.

Local scallops were beautifully prepared with gentle hints of complementary flavours such as garlic and citrus carefully balanced to avoid overpowering the essential flavour and texture of the scallops. This was a visual feast in itself.

The QB area also has excellent meat suppliers and both the pork and the beef which were the focus of the two entrees (main courses) were stunningly tender and full of flavour. It's a cliche when reviewing meals to say that well prepared and presented vegetable are the test of a good restaurant. In this area there was no disappointment at all with the freshness and taste vibrantly present. Desserts are apparently made fresh in house and what we tasted seemed to bear this out - classic Creme Brulee and choclate bread pudding were both delicious and satisfying.

Bistro 694 has a reasonable BC-focussed wine list but also offers the opportunity to bring your own with a corkage charge ($18). We took in a 14 year old red and were very impressed with the clearly knowlegable care that was taken to uncork and decant this. Overall service was very attentive at all times without being stifling.

The outstanding cooking, very pleasant and unobtrusive service and relaxed atmosphere made for an excellent and happy evening out. From our point of view all these plus points made it very good value for money. Any downside? We chose a table near the door and at this time of year a degree or two warmer temperature would have been perfect.
