Owner description: In the heart of Alpilles, the monumental “Carrières de Lumières” host extraordinary multimedia shows which are unique in the world. Spectators are totally immersed in the images projected onto all the surfaces of the rock. The ground is completely covered, too, and becomes a vast carpet of images. The site has reopened its doors with the show “Gauguin - Van Gogh, painters of colour”, created by Gianfranco Iannuzzi with Renato Gatto and Massimiliano Siccardi.

“unique visual art”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2013

It used to be a mine quarry, but an artists use it to be a place for painting show on its walls. With high technology visual mapping, nice music to go along with the visual show. It was really romantic and attractive experience in enjoying Rembrandt, Monet paintings...

“Well kept secret”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2013

I have travelled many times to France and have not heard about Carrieres de Lumieres before. I read about this excellent attraction on Wow website, a french english information website.

I was blown away. I got the same wonderful feeling as i do when i watch fireworks. The beautiful of the projected images on to the quarry walls is too hard to describe.

You must see it yourself.

Loved you, loved it.

“A great way to meet the greats”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

We thoroughly enjoyed the paintings - it really is extremely well done. If you are not up to speed on the artists then it would be a good idea to research some of this to truly appreciate the multi-media display.Remember to take something warm as it is quite chilly inside, even though the temperatures were high outside. (If you have forgotten, then you can buy something for 5€ at the entrance.) Taking photos is somewhat tricky as no flashes are allowed. If you intend to also visit the chateau then you can buy tickets for the Carrieres and the Chateau which means you can skip the line at the Chateau. It would be nice to know more about the history of the quarries.

“Spectacular and extraordinary.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2013 via mobile

Currently there is an exhibition on here entitled Monet, Renoir....Chagall- Journeys Around the Meditteranean. It runs until January 5, 2014 and showcases the talents of these 3 artists and more. The beauty of this though is that it isn't just paintings hung on a wall. It is an extraordinary installation where these works are projected onto the walls of the limestone quarry as a 30 minute movie that is continuously repeated interspersed with another dreamlike artistic visual, aptly titled La Rêve (The Dream). The quarry itself is incredible but the addition of the visuals makes for a mesmerising experience. It was only a 15 minute drive from St Remy and I highly recommend it, especially if you are an art lover.
