“Great Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2012

My wife and I took 3 business guests/friends for lunch at the Swiss House today. The restaurant was very quiet largely due to a radio report that the road had been closed. This is the 6th time I have eaten here and I will certainly be going back for more of the excellent (although slightly expensive) food. Drink service always seems a little slow and the front of house staff failed to respond to a request from one of our guests but this was certainly made up for by the well prepared and well presented food.

“Worst steak pie and mash I've ever had!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2012

I am only commenting on a lunch meal I had recently and not the evening menu, which hopefully is cooked by a proper chef. I would also say that the refurbishment is excellent and they have created an intimate, stylish eating venue. However, I went in for lunch the other day and ordered the steak pie, which with extra vegetables (not included) cost me £13. Now for that kind of money I expect something good! The pastry was good, but the gravy was like water and the steak had no real taste at all. The mash potato was so over-buttered that it slid around the plate all by itself. The vegetables also failed to escape this and were swimming in the stuff. I always say, fresh, perfectly cooked vegetables don't need anything adding to them. Perhaps with the absence of a chef at lunch time it would be advisable to stick to sandwiches and cakes instead? The staff were very friendly, but £13 for a bland steak pie is not good. I shall reserve final judgement until I sample the evening menu.

“Variable dining and service experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2012

We have eaten at the Swiss House several times over the past few months, both lunch & dinners, weekdays/weekends. As mentioned above, variable dining experience as well as service. Had some lovely, delicious simple meals served by friendly, chatty staff (recognised from Tan Roagan), as well as larger group meals where the food as well as the service were surprisingly out of sync. Big minus for us is the constant lack of vegetarian main meal options-currently there is only one, which drastically limits your choices if you are wanting to return there again for dinner.
Dined out at The Swiss house mid-week last week. Although the place was only 50% full at the most, the waitressess seemed somewhat lost and stressed out which resulted drinks tooking long to arrive, some did not get the menus at all, lack of basic knowledge by the staff of the options/ingredients served, haphazard table cleaning ie either before someone has finished or way too late ie after desserts. Our dessert orders were confused and even though we said it was ok, the waitress did come back in some time and take them apologeticaly off the table with us then having had to wait 15 min longer for the right order.
The food itself was oily (queenie pancake) and frankly bland (vegetable wellington). Once again only one vegetarian option. I did enjoy the lemon-coconut cheesecake.
I will give it some time before considering returning again as the variable dining and service puts Swiss House in my average category.

Thank you for your feedback. It is aways appreciated. As a valued repeat customer we are disappointed you could not have contacted the restaurant directly to let us know your experience or on the night so that we could have made attempts to resolve any issues with your meal.

All the dishes on our menu are homemade using fresh, and as much locally sourced produce as as possible. Our team of chefs led by Jean-Pierre work very hard to deliver a fresh and seasonally balanced menu with additional specials changed on a daily basis depending on availability of fresh fish or meat.

The Swiss House is not a Vegetarian restaurant, nor do we promote it as such. The Isle of Man is well regarded for its variety of fish and meat and with our commitment to supporting local producers we have created a menu that promotes these features of Manx Cuisine.
As all our food is created fresh and from scratch, not defrosted or ready made we are not able to offer an extensive menu which would attempt to meet every taste and style. There are other eating establishments which can provide this experience.

However, with a team of professional chefs on hand and a kitchen of fresh produce we are always happy to create a dish or make amendments to suit, particularly for our vegetarian customers. If you would like something different to what is on the menu we will always consult the kitchen and try our best to meet your wishes.

In regards to the variable service you have experienced this is obviously a concern to us. Staff turnover in the hospitality industry particularly on the island is very high resulting in a number of challenges for developing a consistent and enthusiastic front of house team. Opening in February this year and learning the dynamics of a restaurant in the location we are in, we are relatively early in the stages of creating the perfect eating experience. We take feedback when given and put it into action.

The mushroom wellington has been a very popular dish, recently added to our a la carte menu. It comes as a disappointment to learn you found this bland. This morning we had a tasting of the wellington and found it to be very flavoursome and balanced in taste, texture and appearance. This is not to say on your visit the wellington did not meet your expectations and we can only apologise. This could have been attributed to a number of things on the day which had we known at the time we could have made another fresh to order. Again, as much as we support TripAdvisor, learning of these issues a few days or months after in some cases does not allow us to make necessary changes and ensure your experience on the night is best it could be.

In summary, like our menus, the restaurant is always evolving and improving and as such we think this makes a more dynamic and exciting experience. To that effect I would hope you continue to support the restaurant and make any feedback known to one of the team, good or bad. We dont bite i promise!

“Group meal at Swiss House”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2012

A group meal for a birthday celebration. Shown to waiting area and offered drinks - took quite a long time for us all to get drinks, but on a plus note the cocktails were yummy. Given that we waited a long time for our table I would have expected to be offered further drinks.

We were asked to pick starters, mains and desserts prior to sitting at the table, so no excuse for 4 people's side dishes not to turn up with the mains - we had to ask for them. Plates were not cleared from bread course to accept staters. Had to ask several times for more drinks, at least 3 of our Tart Tatin's were mush and lacking in the usual scrummy caramel. We all noticed the accompanying sauces that were meant to be different all looked and tasted the same, excluding the bernaise sauce. Those of us that had the queenie pancakes thought they were yummy, however my hake was under seasoned and could have stood a bit more crisping of the skin.

The serving staff didn't really engage us - no real atmosphere in the restaurant. The young lady with very blond hair was the only one that had bit of something about her - very sweet.

Overall on this night the customer service was just about adequate but the venue itself and some of the food was the winner on the night. The customer service really does need looking at as it appears to be inconsistent given some of the reviews. Having said, this friends that were with us on the night had experiened the lack do drinks being offered previously.
