“Superb accomodation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013

My wife and I found this charming Inn on our way to Calgary and wound up staying two nights in Drumheller. The room was exceptionally cozy and the Patrice, one of the owners was so very friendly and helpful. We would highly recommend this as the best place to stay in Drumheller !

We are so grateful that nice people like you stumble upon us. Because we can be so busy, most people book far in advance - so it is rare that we get 'walk in' visitors. I have a feeling we'll be seeing you again. Thank you for the wonderful and kind words.

We stayed here two nights on a Sept weekend and re-visited the sights seen on the Amazing Race Canada when they came here, plus some extras! We were very comfortable and especially enjoyed our big room with fireplace. (We wish the weather had been cooler so we could have had an excuse to keep it on :) The various toiletries included were also very nice and pleasantly scented. I've since purchased some that were featured. The breakfast served 8-10 is excellent and includes fresh fruit, berries-stuffed French toast, with eastern maple syrup. Yum! We enjoyed the family style dining and met some wonderful fellow guests. Zeke and Patrice are both very personable and help to make your stay just what you wanted with helpful tips on what's available in the area! Good dining options are within walking distance.
[Peter v describes it well, if you want more detail]

Room Tip: We were on the main floor, close to parking and easy for breakfast. Main East Great queen bed.

Thank you for your kind words. The amazing race gave Drumheller such super exposure. The Atlas Coal Mine and of course the Tyrrell Museum are always a must see for visitors. The "Tour of Alberta" was another opportunity for the world to see our unique and prehistoric terrain. We are expecting all this years television coverage to make us a busy place next summer.
thanks again,

Spent a couple of days in the cottage. It was comfortable and quiet, making for a very relaxing stay. Very clean room and well maintained. Within close walking distance of a great coffee shop, Cafe Ole, and a nice stroll to Sublime Food and Wine. A wonderful spot to take a break will exploring the Drumheller region.

Thanks for the review. And thanks for mentioning our friends at Sublime Restaurant - #1 on Trip Advisor and Café Ole` the super comfy coffee shop just down the street. That's why Drumheller is a great town, super places to eat, museums and shopping second to none.

Made you look!

My husband and I recently had the pleasure of staying in one the most charming accommodations in all of Alberta. I had been looking on Trip advisor the day before we left for Drumheller and came across The Heartwood Inn. The reviews were great and the photos look enticing but we decided to just wing it and find somewhere to stay when we arrived, we only needed a room for the night. We were shocked at how busy and expensive all of the hotels were. We would have happily stayed at the Super 8, Ramada or the Hoo-Doo Motel but to our advantage, they were full. We drove past the Heartwood on our way into town and we both remarked on how cute the place was. As our options were dwindling, we decide to go check it out, Zeke, the Inn keeper had one room left and boy did it have our name on it. He described the room as being modest, one of their smallest even. I had seen pictures of the room (The Dormer Room) on the website and thought it looked perfect for the two of us, Zeke showed us the room in person and it was amazing! A two tiered number with one of the most opulent bathrooms I have ever seen in a hotel in this price range. Zeke had been unabashedly bragging about his French toast, almost from the moment we arrived, so on Sunday morning that was a must. The French toast was pretty epic and if you think you can do it better than Zeke, come on down and challenge him, Bobby Flay, I’m talking to you.
I never really thought about Drumheller as a vacation destination, ‘til we stayed at the Heartwood. I would come back again and again.

Word of caution, if you are looking to party it up and get bad in the badlands, this isn’t the place for you. There’s an econo lodge down the way that looks like they go all night, if you know what I mean.

Zeke is an old school type of guy, he demands respect for his Inn and his family. Give him that respect and in return you get the 5 star treatment from your quick witted host.

Between the beauty of the property, the amazing room, the best French toast in Alberta and Zeke, the host with most, The Heartwood Inn is by far the best bet in the entire Valley.

Oh yeah, they have a spa as well. I haven’t indulged yet but my hubby and I are going back next weekend (I’m not even kidding about it being the best place we have ever stayed in Alberta, I’m hooked!) I see a couples massage in our future.

From the moment we were greeted by Zeke, we knew we'd found the right place to stay in Drumheller. His "Heartwood Inn" is precisely that - an inn. And Zeke, the owner, is likewise the innkeeper - in every sense of the word. This is his place - a fact he makes no bones about, which turns out is a wonderful thing. He loves his Inn, its history, all its features, but most of all, he loves his guests - especially those that show even a modicum of interest in The Heartwood. We did, and as soon as he sensed we were "on board", the Inn took on the cast of a magical oasis.

Amid stories of the Inn's chequered past (including ghosts, convents and brothels!) Zeke showed us "The Dormer" - his last remaining room on a busy Saturday night. He rather apologetically referred to it as his most “basic” room, a characterization that left us quizzical given how lovely it was. It's a cozy, two-level affair with a smallish sleeping area just off the doorway, and a large, I daresay opulent bathroom a couple of steps up. There's no shower, but the tub is large and deep. I'm not a bath-guy because at 6'3", I really need the stand-up room of a shower. In this tub, I had absolutely no problems. The décor is what I’d characterize as “country chic” – pretty earthenware, tasteful wall decorations and paintings, and dense, colourful curtains. Antique furnishings cap off the look with a large, lovely wooden dresser being most notable.

The bed (a queensize) was very comfortable. Covers were not excessive and pillows were soft and welcoming. There were lots of white towels available for us to use, alongside two thick white bathrobes. Everything was immaculately clean and well-kept. The Inn also has a day spa just off The Dormer. The faint smell of essential oils emanating from the spa’s rooms was refreshing and totally unobtrusive. I can’t stand air-fresheners as they give me headaches almost immediately – these odours, as mentioned, were pleasant.

The room was equipped with a small air-conditioner that we made good use of given the 27-degree weather. In fact, the staff (I believe it was Zeke’s wife, actually) pre-cooled the room for us before we “moved in”. There’s also a medium-sized tv mounted high up on the wall in the bedroom – perfect for pre-slumber viewing. Most channels were available through the cable box.

After a very quiet, pleasant night, we awoke rested though not refreshed (we could have easily slept a few more hours in our comfy bed). Once we’d packed up, we opened the door and were greeted by the delicious smell of Zeke’s legendary French Toast wafting up the stairs from the Inn’s dining room below. After packing our gear back into the car, we headed into the bright, communal dining room. It’s very old-world inn-style – long tables, tall chairs, clean porcelain and glassware. Zeke himself served us coffee and OJ immediately. My wife ordered green-tea, but received a peach-tea instead. Ordinarily this would have elicited some protest, but frankly the tea was delicious, so this oversight was put down to fortuitous happenstance – no complaint necessary. The toast itself (2 slices) was thick, blueberry filled, perfectly cooked and garnished with whipped cream, blueberries, pineapple and watermelon. The maple syrup (real!) was the perfect complement and we both gladly scarfed down every bite as did the two other couples with whom we shared the dining room. The great thing about inn-style accommodations is how they soft-force interaction with people – you can’t sit at a table with others and ignore them. In no time we were engaged in happy discourse with our tablemates. Zeke, as innkeeper par excellence, joined in.

At that point, it was time to check out – total tally came in at under $150 for the night – breakfast for two and all taxes included. Given the rates at the larger chain places (min. $150+) and even the basic HooDoo motel ($110), we felt this was very, very reasonable. When you factor in the ambiance, cleanliness and care with which we were greeted, treated and sent off, it becomes downright cheap.

For those looking for a flop for the night, the Waldorf Hotel is just down the way. But if you actually consider the places you stay/sleep as being integral to your travelling experience, you simply can’t go wrong at the Heartwood. Indeed, we’re headed back in a week with our kids for another helping of the Inn’s ambiance, as well as “Alberta’s best French Toast”!

At first glance the place looked like it was starting to show its age, but once inside it showed us it has character. Our room was large and well furnished. It was nice that we had our own separate entrance to the outside or could use the door to our room to access the inn. We will definitely return.

Thank you for your kind review. You are right the place is starting to show its age on the outside, that is why we are currently replacing all the outside decking, A dozen new windows, new siding and a bright new paint job. Now if winter will just hold off a few more weeks! Great deals during our renovations until December.

We stayed in their small cottage and it was like having our own cozy house and garden. My only complaint is that we were passing through and only stayed one night. We went to the main house (across the street) for breakfast and it looked quite pretty as well. The man who showed us around was very friendly. I would definitely stay here again.
