“Food doesn't match the setting”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2011

We almost felt overdressed as we entered the restaurant as we looked around. We were quickly seated. Our waiter was over- talkative and overly friendly, talking a lot about himself. The seafood soup appetizer was good if in a very small bowl. Since they recommended the sable fish, I ordered it, and my husband had the short ribs. What a mistake! The fish was only okay but not outstanding. At least it had a rich taste . But it was also swimming in a tasteless soupy brew that was mostly hot water with some dabs of tomato and onion. Where was the flavor? My husbands dish arrived with food that looked just plopped on the plate (no artistry) and the taste was almost gamey. Once again, very little usage of simple herbs. The mashed potatoes were great...but you expect more for the price! Salmon is their best offering, but expect a small amount. I will go to Burnaby Mountain again to enjoy the roses and the view, but not the food!

“Spectacular view and gardens and good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2011

On a recent visit to Burnaby, we dined at Horizons to celebrate some family birthdays. I had made the reservation using Open Table and made a note that we wanted a table with a view. The restaurant was very accomodating. The lunch menu is a modest size with mostly seafood on it. Most of the seafood was a little overcooked. I was a little surprised since judging from their menu that it was their specialty. It wasn't horribly bad, but just that much off what I was expecting. Our server was very courteous and efficient. The bus person was good, but everytime he filled a water glass he would return it to the table with a thunderous crash. Our lunch seemed to take a little longer than anticipated, but the server came over and assured us that our lunch would be coming soon. I appreciated the fact that I didn't have to ask where our lunch was, she anticipated and I liked that. After lunch she brought us a dessert on the house as well as a small sparkling wine cocktail. I thought it was a generous offering. After lunch we wandered the parklike setting and admired the flowers and the views.

“Nice place for a nice meal, but not what we had expected...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2011

We visited Horizon’s atop Burnaby Mountain for our first wedding anniversary after a recommendation from a friend.

We had never been there, but were told it was a fine dining restaurant with nice views. Given the information we were provided, my husband put on a nice suit, pressed shirt, tie, and polished dress shoes; I wore a cocktail dress with moderate jewelry. Once arriving at the establishment, we realized we were both quite overdressed. There wasn’t another man in the place with a tie, and perhaps only half were even wearing a shirt with a collar. Most of the women were sporting skirts and blouses / jackets, or even hodge-podge pant suits. You would be dressed well (based on what we saw), if the men wore slacks, a collared dress shirt and jacket; ladies – a summer-esque dress you might wear to an outdoor wedding would do you just fine.

Once inside, while the restaurant was nice enough, it lacked an air of elegance for a place that claims to be a fine dining eatery. There were no table cloths, and no candles or center pieces on the tables. The hostess was wearing something I would think one would wear for a night out to a fancy club; the bussers ad servers were wearing white blouses or collared shirts and black slacks. Our busser was wearing black runners.

While the ambience and presentation of the place left something to be desired, the service was really very good. Our server (Bea M.) was attentive, friendly, efficient, very knowledgeable about the restaurant’s menu, and made some great recommendations. Our order was taken promptly, and our drinks arrived in short order. We also received complimentary warm bread and butter. It was okay. Nothing exciting though … certainly wasn’t as good as the Old Spaghetti Factory’s complimentary bread! Moving along…

The wine selection was alright, but quite overpriced. Give the choices and the corresponding prices, we opted to order non-alcoholic beverages which did us just fine. The menu was of decent caliber, though you really do have to like fish and seafood if you are looking to have the option of variety for your dinner entrée. 80% of their main courses and a good majority of their appetizers were fish or seafood.

Once our food arrived, we were pleasantly surprised. It was really very good. Portion size was reasonable; quality was good; meat and fish were cooked to the right consistency; and the sides which came with the mains were good complimentary choices by the Chef. Prices range from $18-36 for a dinner entrée; I think it was a tad overpriced, but at least there was quality behind the cost. We happened to have an Entertainment Book coupon which we used, so we got a two-for-one main which made the cost less objectionable.

After our meal, we were offered dessert but were both too full. The dessert options LOOKED nice enough, though there wasn’t much available to those with nut allergies. On the plus side, we were given two complimentary glasses of sparkling wine as it was our anniversary. Certainly a nice service touch.

On the whole, I would say it was a decent dining experience … just not the fine dining atmosphere or menu choices we were expecting.

“Choose your meal wisely”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2011

Reside in Arizona and have visited this restaurant, probably since it opened, any time we have been in Vancouver .Martini weak; lemon peal old, dry, not rubbed along rim of glass. Tasteless. Salmon grilled on alderwood always our choice. July, 2011: Salmon never saw a sliver of alderwood and was probably baked and fake grill markings put on afterwards. Creamed rice served with salmon ridiculous combination. House wine, good. Chocolate mousse excellent. Service good but not exceptional. View outstanding. Spoke with waitress and hostess on our disappointment. Received business card with Chef's name. Emailwsl my thoughts. No answer. Problem: Do we continue a long-standing tradition of eating at the Horizons and have something else claimed to be grilled on alderwood, or do we get some some take-away sushi and sit on the lovely grounds and admire the view that was not available to me as I child (it was heavily forested) when I would play up in that very area in the summers and cut down a Christmas tree in the winters.

“Very good food and service! But bad seating!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2011 via mobile

Tasty food, especially their lamb entree! Great service and fair prices! But seating sucked! She first gave us a table in the middle of the restaurant, then we asked for a table beside the window for better view. The restaurant was 80% empty, but she gave us a tiny table and with another couple very close to us. The table wasn't even big enough to put our food. Anyways, except that, everything was perfect!
