This establishment has been in business far longer than any other restuarant in Castlegar. It may be the most expensive chinese diner anywhere, the food is average at best and some items have a definite "twist" on what you would normally expect in chinese dishes. The menu is huge and given some of the items and the small number of customers server daily as well as the speed the food comes out, it really makes you question what goes on in the kitchen.
The Highlite does have a certain charm and nostalgia you wont find anywhere else... it could be the lime green decor that dates back to circa 1966. It could be the juke boxes at every table dating back to the same era, it could be the fact that they will open for you even if they are closed at any hour of the night or morning, or the fact that they turn the lights off when they are open but with no customers. Keep your expectations low and ask yourself where else you can get a $15 plate of "chicken" chow mein at 4 AM. You won't be dissappointed.
