I visited the Hume Hotel with my son. A lovely hotel that epitomised how
Nelson had developed as a town. I felt like I was looking at how the pioneers had made a life for themselves in a new and inspiring land.
Good food and friendly service with a variety of bars that had something for all.

This historic hotel is centrally situated in downtown Nelson. We stayed in one of the renovated rooms which was done to the nines. Quiet location and super comfortable beds. Ate at the restaurant twice and we enjoyed listening to talented local musicians play while we dined. Best of though were all were the staff we met. Unbelievably friendly, helpful and focused on making our stay as comfortable as possible. We highly recommend staying here!

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the pub for an good night's sleep

We stayed for 1 night at the end of June in room 458 (Juliet Suite). It's on the top floor and has a nice view of the Nelson courthouse and mountains. The room is clean and large. Air con is fast and strong and controlled in the unit. Windows open, too. There is a large bathroom which contains a large soaker tub and separate shower. The bathroom was very clean, the towels were fluffy, and the water pressure was good.

The room is modern and attractive. There is a lot of wood. The linens were crisp and white. There are some nice photos in the room with a local historical theme.

There were minor elevator problems during our stay, so a hotel employee accompanied us in the elevator when we took our luggage up to the room, but we took the stairs up and down for the remainder of our stay. The second floor hasn't been renovated yet, which was very obvious as we descended/ascended. It's charming, but I wouldn't stay down there. I probably wouldn't stay on the 3rd floor either, because it's an old building and I don't much care for the sound of people walking above me.

We ate dinner at the hotel after a trip to Ainsworth Hot Springs for a soak. We ate in the old library. It's done up quite nicely in the Victorian style (the hotel is mostly 20s Edwardian, I think). Dinner portions were large, and quality was very good. Service was very nice. We were there on a Sunday, and there was live jazz music, a young musician with guitar. It was unobtrusive and really, really nice.

We usually make it to Nelson once a year, but we don't usually stay here. When I found out that the hotel's top floors had been renovated, I wanted to explore. We will definitely return.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor, and splurge for a suite with a view of the mountains.

Hi Chris. Thanks so much for the wonderful detailed review of your experience here. It is quite the difference when you walk from the 3rd floor down to the 2nd floor which has not yet been renovated. That is why for a bit extra, it is so worth treating oneself to a newly renovated room with air conditioning especially during the summer.

Thanks for taking the time and we hope to see you back again soon.

The Hume hotel was a great place to stay in Nelson. By far my favorite. The room was clean and beautiful. Comfy bed. The continental breakfast was amazing and included in the price of our stay. Even though the elevator was broken when I was there, I still enjoyed my stay and didnt care. The pub inside the Hume was fun as well. I highly recommend the Hume hotel!

It is really nice to see a positive review coming out of Cranbrook after the review below you was rather scathing from a fellow Cranbrook resident! Perhaps you were here on the same car club excursion as he was.

Thanks for the great recommendation. We will begin building our new rooms on the second floor as well as a day spa this coming October which should be ready in time for the busy ski season. You will definitely have to come back and check out the changes in the New Year.

I was quoted a price of $139.00 per night but was charged $149.00 per night. Plus tax so ended up costing $179.00. This is not a $179.00 hotel per night. Elevator wasn't working properly. Very noisey from band in bar and traffic noise. This is a very tired old hotel that has tried to make itself into a silk purse with renovations. Not working! Not much else available but pretty much anything better than this.

Room Tip: Don't go there unless you have a confirmed rate. Make sure you have the confirmation number..

Hi Dean. I am sorry that we 'sucked'. I remember when you came in with the Rocking In The Rockies Car Club last week. We had quoted the organizer $139 for a Deluxe Single Queen and $149 for a Deluxe Two Queen. You received the latter so that's why you were charged that rate.

Don't forget that included with the rate is a tasty breakfast in the morning as well. The organizer also made arrangements to have covered parking in the adjacent City Parkade and because of this there was a $4 extra charge on your bill. After 15% tax it came to $176.

Our elevator was working when you were here but we needed a staff member to run it safely for guests. Many guests have enjoyed the heritage feel of having an elevator operator take you up and down. It seems as though the heritage nostalgia of everything we stand for is not impressive to a traveler like you whatsoever.

I am truly sorry that you were let down in all aspects of your stay. If you ever come back to Nelson there are many other quality accommodators that could give you the value and experience you are seeking.

From the front desk personal to the house keeper and food staff our stay was great. We would definitely stay there again. Our room was clean and very nicely decorated. Close to every thing where we needed to go.

Room Tip: Upper floor corner suites are large and have a great veiw.

My husband and I stayed at the Hume for a night while driving the Selkirk Loop for our 10th anniversary and we loved it! Our 4th floor deluxe queen room was just the right size and beautifully done. We walked around Nelson for just a short time, but always ended up back at the Hume for drinks and meals...Mikes Pub had great atmosphere and friendly staff. We loved that we got to go downstairs for a hot breakfast instead of the "make your own waffle" that some hotels have....all in all our stay exceeded our expectations. Keep doing what you are doing and we can not wait to stay at the Hume again!
