“Comfortable and Affordable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2007

I stayed with my wife and daughter at the Hound on the last weekend of July 2007, and we had a restful and pleasant stay. As the previous reviewer said, the rooms were small and the view was non-existent (we looked out to two other windows and an air-conditioner). However, if you want a great view, just step outside and look in any direction! The virtue of the Hound is that it is very affordable ($95 for two double beds), very clean, and the staff is very helpful. We had good fruit, coffee and muffins in the lobby, which was great way to start the day.

My fiance and I visited Nelson for a week in the summer of 2006, staying at the MountainHound for the duration. I am in the hotel business myself and we live in a resort area in NM. As such we were looking for something special. We don't necessarily like spending a lot of money on rooms when we travel. We do like impecable maintenace and cleanliness and some sense of style in the property as well as good hospitality, a convenient location and quiet.
The Mountain Hound is all of that! The new owners have done a fantastic job totally renovating the property. The rooms are on the smaller side but not cramped at all. The furnishings are all new, contemporary in style and above average quality. The beds are extremely comfortable. All the rooms have AC which is nice as we were there in a mild heat wave. Construction is cinderblock which makes the rooms very quiet. We didn't hear neighbors at all although the place was full every night of our stay. Our first room was the only one at the front of the building and we did hear a little street noise in the morning. Management kindly switched us to another room further back.
Location is the best! The property is right on Baker Street which is one of the main street in Nelson. We were convenient to restaurants, bars and shopping and a close walk to residential neighborhoods and the lake front (although we usually drove to those areas). The property has no private parking so you must park on the street as close as possible. We had no trouble in peak season parking within a block all the time.
Hospitality is great! As mentioned they switched us to a room off the street and were wonderful in taking our reservation, answering any questions we had and generally making us feel welcome.
At their price point I'm sure there is no better choice in Nelson for a single person or couple. Parents with children might prefer larger rooms but you will find none cleaner or better maintained anywhere in Nelson. Strongly recommended!

My boyfriend and I recently stayed for two nights in a Single Standard room at the Mountain Hound Inn. Chosen for it's terrific value ($89 per night) and the fact that it offered air conditioned rooms, we were pleasantly surprised by the modern decor, the helpful and friendly staff and the super convenient location. Admittedly, we were a bit surprised that the room was so tiny, and we giggled at the "Kootenay view" from our window (a brick wall!); however, what it lacked in size, it made up for in hospitality and comfort. The room was very well maintained during our stay and was exceptionally clean. The bed was also very comfy with super-fluffy pillows and down duvets. And, if size is an issue, many of the rooms were a fair bit bigger, and some even accomodate two queen beds and/or small kitchenettes. Parking is only available on the street, which is metered from 9am to 5pm Monday through Saturday; however, if you leave coins with the front desk, staff will plug the meters for you. We never had trouble finding parking close to the hotel. All in all, the Mountain Hound is a quirky little gem. What it lacks in size, it makes up for in value, comfort and convenience, We will definitely stay here again!
