Firstly, I never write food reviews because quite frankly I do not like to complain about food in a place like Cape Breton, where any business is good business. However, The Lobster Pound is horrible. Their staff especially, who are rude and arrogant. I had went to the restaurant for supper with 3 others, the calamari I had ordered as an appetizer was like rubber with a soggy, greasy batter, which after I had asked if I could have it fixed as it was stated on the menu with a "crispy batter", the very "all knowing", obnoxious waitress rolled her eyes and said, "that is how we make it". I had to ask her for a menu to point out the obvious (misspelling?). Another of the party had ordered the mussels to start, which were not fresh, cleaned well and were very dry in a bland sauce.
As for meals, the chowder was terrible, the worst my friends or I have ever tasted, with salmon so fatty it was repulsive. The two steaks ordered were of low grade beef, over cooked, with more grizzle than meat..... and who thought sesame seeds on steak was a good idea? Just plain weird!! The lobster ravioli was frozen and then heated, it does not take a genius to figure this out when they stopped serving lobster, "a few weeks ago" as the waitress had stated. Lobster pound with only frozen lobster....hrmmm. I suppose one should drive to one of the other restaurants in Cape Breton which actually serve lobster dinners, such as Baddeck Lobster Suppers, which is divine, I might add! The only part of the meal that was somewhat enjoyable was a caesar salad, by no means the best salad I have ever tasted, but as good as the premade kind you get at the Atlantic Super Store. So edible.
Dessert - skipped (who would want to try it!)
Wine - terrible wine list, settled for one that was corked (was told by the waitress she had just opened it, of course). Normally I buy a bottle of wine at restaurants to avoid this, however, I was on a time schedule and the other person drinking wine ordered white as she does not enjoy red.
Chefs- Extremely rude! Normally they would apologize for their lack of chef-like ability, no, not here. They instead gawked at my table after I complained of the soggy calamari, and hollered something at me after they had "fixed" them.
Wait staff- As I had only one waitress, I cannot comment on the entire wait staff, but the waitress that was looking after our table was an older lady (I cringe referring to her as that), with short brown hair, was horendous. She had obviously no knowledge of food if she thought squid should be the texture of a rubber band, had not come back to the table to see if the calamari had come out any better the second time, she huffed at another person I was with when they had told her their steak was well done after asking for it rare, yes rare-very hard to make that mistake. She slammed our bill on the table and had very little manners or grace while serving us, complete trash...both the food and staff!
Another note to remember while reading this review, I was a waitress for many years before settling on a career, I do not expect a waitress to know everything or not to make a mistake, but I was always told and believe a customer should be treated fairly, and they are always right unless under certain circumstances. The ownders of the establishment should rething their hires, because their staff now is pathetic.
Everyone should do themselves a favor, skip this place, and go up the road to the BLACK SPOON....there you wil get great food, a great atmosphere, friendly-knoweldgable staff with a sense of humor, a wine list worth drinking and did I mention GREAT FOOD!!!!!!
Of 4 visits to the Lobster Pound, all were terrible, the last was the worst.

We are glad you took your time in composing your review and didn't write in haste. Usually someone who has a bad experience in August wouldn't wait until October to respond. We recall your visit clearly and are pleased that we did not charge you for your meal as that would surely have been included in the litaney of problems you encountered. We observed your displeasure with our valued and excellent server, in response to which the female owner/manager dropped by your table to check on the possibility of satisfying your party.
As you mention there are many great places to dine on the Northside. A dicerning palate will always find it's favorite haunt. Because it is an absolute certainty that we are unable to meet your expectations, we support your decision to dine exlsewhere.
We are so thankful for the wonderful, caring staff who stand and support us. To our customers who wait days for a reservation and somehow manage to have wonderful, enjoyable evenings in the same establishment you describe; we send our thanks.
A good business can certainly grow and benefit through intelligent, constructive and fair criticisms. With that as a checklist , we're still open to receiving them.
