“Mediocre food. Lousy service.”
My wife and I recently went to Ginger Thai Cuisine in Cobourg, (for her birthday) after having frequented and enjoyed several meals at their previous restaurant named "Miss Thailand Cuisine" at a different location in Cobourg. As we had tickets to a performance at the Park Theatre that evening, this restaurant is across the street and offers a 15% discount on meals if you present your theatre tickets.
We parked in the rear and entered through the "Patio". Unlike the restaurant next door which was crammed with patrons and had live music, there was no one seated on the patio at Ginger Thai. The tables and chairs were all wet and the ground had litter strewn about. We went inside and saw a few people seated in the dining area.
We found our own seats by the window (which was covered with flies) and were seated for close to half and hour before our unkempt and unshaven waiter appeared to take our order. As it was a very hot day I was looking forward to ordering an ice cold beer. The waiter informed us that the restaurant had applied for, but had NOT YET(?) received their LCBO license, despite having been at their current location for over a year!
After receiving our (non-alcoholic) drinks and waiting a further 20 minutes we finally had to call the waiter over and ask if we could order our meals. We ordered vegetarian Pad Thai and Curry noodles with shrimp, sticky rice, with spring rolls and deep fried Taro and Tofu as appetizers. In the mean time, an annoying child of about 5 years of age kept wandering around the dining room talking loudly and interupting diners' meals. It soon became apparent that the child belonged to one of the restaurant's owners.
The spring rolls came relatively quickly, but when they did we were informed that they had no taro and tofu available, which was a disappointment to my wife who was looking forward to them as she is a vegetarian. We were also advised that they were short staffed that night because "someone didn't come in to work". That explained the waiter who was obviously a last-minute fill in.
By this time we had been in the restaurant for 80 minutes and our entree's had not arrived. I had to prompt the waiter to bring our main dishes as by this time only had 40 minutes before curtain time.He told me he'd ask the kitchen staff to put a "rush" on it. It finally came and we had to wolf it down. It was ok, but not great. (only 5 shrimp in my dish). The sticky rice never did appear.
As we now had to rush to leave, we went to the front and asked for the bill instead of waiting for the waiter to bring it to the table. The sticky rice we didn't get was on the bill (natch) and the 15% discount wasn't applied despite mentioning it and showing our tickets to the waiter previously. All in all, a very unpleasant and disappointing dining experience. We won't be visiting Ginger Thai Cuisine again.
