We love the area - very beautiful. Hotel has lots of facilities and in general you won't want for anything. Just think that for the opulence of the resort that they have some serious thinking to do. You can certainly have a great time here but you really have to question whether you're getting a "five star" or "four star" experience. If you read the reviews, I think it's safe to say that this is the common thread.

What we found:
- No answer at room service for our entire stay. Not exaggerating either. They operate on a pageing system apparently.
- 2 hours for room service to arrive.
- Room service orders were wrong. Missing muffins, side orders. Food quality was lacking.
- Lost power to part of our room on our final day.
- Staff in general don't seem to have that service "oomph". No opening doors or greeting you. Not a big deal but it is of course the stuff you expect when you stay at "Deerhurst".

Like I said, you could still have a good time here but it's the extra stuff that you come to a higher end resort like this for.

It's too bad - this place has such great potential - service doesn't cost money to fix - just need someone to re-energize the place perhaps?!?

Agree with others. The grounds are spectacularly beautiful. Amenities and activities for families with children are also great - lake, three outdoor pools, two indoor pools. BUT, the Aveda Spa was moldy and smelled. Only one shower worked. Floors and showers in it were moldy. (Black yuk between tiles, etc.). SPA WAS so noisy - right next to the pinball arcade (emergency exits opened into it. It sounded like las vegas in the massage rooms. Room was okay - standard 2 queens; two desks - kind of weird. We had a balcony overlooking the parking lot - not much of a view for $285/night. You had to request maid service though - We were in the main hotel (Pavilion) and they only did our room 2 of the four days we were there. Towels were skimpy. Service at brunch was good; service at the pub was in trouble - they didn't have enough & management had to pitch in.
On the good side - the town of Huntsville , with its shops and restaurants was only 7 kilometers away. My husband golfed the hhilly course three times - in the 70s, despite thick gorse & the heather. Probably wouldn't return to this hotel.

Given the price that we paid I expected more. The suite was dated. I thought I was back in the 80's. Dark oak wall of cupboards, bed spread and thin linens.

We stayed at Deerhurst over the August long weekend and found the accommodations less than average for such a highly revered resort. There is little to do if you are not a golfer and the activities had a dated feeling similar to that of “Dirty Dancing”…team beach volleyball, etc. It seemed that the resort put little effort into maintenance of the grounds…weeds seemed to make up the landscape when there weren’t tee-offs in the way. In the restaurant, little emphasis was put on customer service. The wait staff was slow and you had to wait in line even though the restaurant was empty. As far as the room was concerned, the door didn’t shut all the way and the deadbolt didn’t work. The bed was hard and uncomfortable. The balcony served little purpose and was dirty. Housekeeping showed up after 4pm and only made the bed and there was dust all over the night tables and desk. This resort is HIGHLY over-rated and I would never go back again even if the price dropped down to below $100 per night.

  • Liked — Lobby Bar made a good martini/cosmopolitan

My husband and I spent a very pleasant, relaxing weekend at Deerhurst despite all the negative reviews we had read prior to our stay. And we're a very picky couple from Toronto!
Let's start from the beginning: checking in - easy, quick, curteous. The room: stayed in the Pavilion - clean, modern, lovely balcony, upscale toiletries, plenty of towels, and the linens on the bed were very 'hotel-ish'. Dinner: first night at Steamers (you have to take a shuttle, but that was very quick and easy to arrange) - knowledgeable, friendly service, varied wine list, and our main courses were very tasty and well thought out (didn't seem like they were trying too hard). The second night we ate at Eclipse - again, pleasantly surprised with all aspects (food, service, value). During the day we played tennis, hung out at the beach. One minor complaint was that there weren't enough lounge chairs on the beach (but we were lucky to snag two, so we were okay).
We avoided breakfast at the resort, because $17 seemed a bit over the top when you can easily hop into your car and visit the Tim Horton's down the street.
In a nutshell - we had a great time, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful and yes, we would visit Deerhurst again.
