“My 50th Birthday celebration at Deerhurst seeing April Wine”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2014

I have never ever been to Deerhurst Resort before. My favorite High School band April Wine was playing the weekend before my big 50th birthday. We don't have a credit card, so we got a prepaid kind where you load the money on to the card, and then purchase things online. This is how we purchased the 1 night package. When we were checking in after our 3 and half hour drive. The Guest Clerk said we needed a credit card to put a $100 damage deposit on, or $300 cash. We did not have either. Just brought a little money for wine for the concert, and dinner after the wine tasting was over. She kept apologizing saying there was nothing she could do. My heart sank into my stomach. We asked to see the manager, who cleared things up immediately. He even noticed I was celebrating my big birthday. We got all checked in, and he knocked on the door with a bottle of wine and some goodies for my bday. the concert was fantastic! The food was amazing! and the rest of our stay was incredible! Very happy! Will try and come back next year.. You do need to tell people about the credit card thing beforehand though! nobody informed me of nothing of the sort. Glad it got worked out anyway!

Room Tip: Did not use room service, or the spa. Very happy with the very nice suite in the Summit Lodge.

Thank you for choosing to spend such a special occasion with us at Deerhurst Resort! I am pleased to read of your positive experience and that you enjoyed the renovated One Bedroom Suite in the Summit Lodges.

We will review our communication and marketing material to ensure it is accurate and communicates this policy effectively.

Came for the April Wine concert: somewhat good value, the entire drink management during concert/dinner was mismanged. Had to line up for tickets, over priced drinks. Brunch at Eclipse: $31.00 for two, cold breakfast buffet, nothing was hot and some entrees were empty.
Updated rooms in the Green condos, very nice except gas fireplace would not work.

We booked this resort in December as a girls weekend April 25 & 26. We booked a 3 bedroom condo which was absolutely disgusting. Broken cupboard doors, drawers that would fall out when opened. Condo was dirty and disgusting. When we complained and asked for a better room we were told the resort was at 100% capacity, even though the parking lots & facility were basically empty. We asked for linens for the sofa bed and the front desk told us "we are not that kind of resort" ? That seemed to be the answer to every complaint we made. We pre-booked spa services and were told we would get 10% discount for our group of 6 and also wine would be served during our services...we didn't get either, Dinner at Ecplise was disgusting...food cold, service was slow, waitstaff was rude. We had asked the front desk about the shuttle service between our condo and the main building....front desk told us there was no such thing and we should walk. Funny how the shuttle bus was right there in front of our condo and he did take us back and forth. Overall very disappointing stay not worth the $2000.00+ we spent this past weekend. Next time we will book at Blue Mountain!! We will definitely not be back.

Room Tip: Don't stay here....even if it's FREE!!

Sorry to read about your disappointment. Our Executive office has direct messaged you via TripAdvisor in hopes to personally connect with you, offer an apology and extend an invitation to return. We remain hopeful we will have the chance to welcome you back at some point and ensure you have a more positive experience with us, which we are known to provide.

Since joining Skyline Hotels & Resorts, we have been re-investing in our property. This past month many of our 1, 2, 3 bedroom condos received a full renovation including carpet, furnishings, fixtures and drapery, which brings us to 320 newly or partially renovated rooms in the past 2 years. We are in the process of mapping out a renovation plan for the remaining multi bedroom condos that we manage on behalf of private individual owners and confident further renovations will be completed soon.

For future guests: Shuttle service is not part of the daily service at the resort. This scheduled shuttle service is available and organized for large special events, golf and group tournaments, large conventions and wedding groups and available to all guests on evenings that our Live Decades Show is playing.

We came here for our anniversary. Had a beautiful suite in one of the Summit Lodge buildings. Room had a fireplace and kitchenette, very nice and modern. Had a great dinner at the Eclipse restaurant. Our table was overlooking the lake and was very nice. Food and service were terrific, would definitely recommend.

A 3 star "average" rating might seem a bit severe for this legendary resort located on sprawling grounds in beautiful Muskoka but here is why :

We were on the "Easter package" deal and had booked Lakeside rooms with breakfast/brunch included. The Bayshore building is indeed - as many have noted - a good (uphill) walk from the Main building. The rooms were nice and spacious with good beds and a lovely view. Now to the negatives : no fridge in the room, no signal on the TV, lengthy wait for extras to be brought to the room and for the TV to be repaired. Bathroom is very cramped. Hair and body gel is a combined product in a wall mounted dispenser ( same with hair conditioner ). Not in favour of a combined hair and body product on the best of days - certainly not in a resort of this standard. No bathrobes either.

Check-in was cumbersome with the person attending not really having been trained and not being able to answer our questions about the resort amenities. Down to the point of not being aware that the resort website has a different name for what is known as the Lobby bar at the resort. It always detracts from the experience when you are faced with discrepancies right from the get-go.

The resort fee of 25$/day is particularly irking at this time of the year : the winter activities are over and the summer ones are not yet instituted. An indoor pool and a gym is now commonly expected at hotels of comparable rates so the trails and the 3 Muskoka chairs on "The Point" is really all you get for this fee. Families with children might be less bothered by the charge as there are some separate fun and games rooms for kids. Also note : the boardwalk has some areas that look as if they need repair and some steps are "missing" at the end of it.

The best part of our experience was the extremely professional and friendly wait staff in both the Lobby bar ( Compass bar and grill ( website)) as well as the fine dining Eclipse restaurant. Both restaurants run off of the same basic menu ( a few extra "Mains" on the Eclipse menu) but the breakfast buffet is served in Eclipse. The breakfast buffet was very extravagant and the Sunday Brunch even more so with a Roast carving station, an Omelette station and Chocolate fountain to boot. The a la carte meals were good as well - but quite pricey.

Do visit the Sugar shack on the property if visiting in season - it is worth it. And do take a walk on the "Rotunda" walk out from Eclipse restaurant - to take in the sweeping view of the scenery. Also : nearby village of Dwight is worth a visit for the trading post.

Be aware that the resort charges a 100$/day/room security deposit that is released upon your departure but effectively stays on your card for upwards of 7 -10 business days. In case you look at your statement when back home and don't know what those 400$ are for ( no one told me upon check-in).

The Easter package deal made this getaway an acceptable value. There appear to be a couple of loyalty programs that might make it more attractive to re-visit but again : it was not possible to get clear information about these Skyline and Preferred membership rewards. The resort does have a "legendary" feel to it but amenities are substandard for the non discounted rates. For that reason I would not return.

Room Tip: Summit lodges if you need a fridge/kitchenette and Main building if visiting in the off season - so...

Our recent stay at Deerhurst was absolutely spectacular and sooooo relaxing! We had a few minor hiccups on the first day of our stay, but any issues we had were rectified swiftly and professionally by Haley at Guest Services. Our room in the Summit Lodges overlooking the lake and the golf course was beautifully updated and the perfect amount of space for our stay. The bed was to die for!! I haven't slept that well since before I had children 12 years ago! The food at Eclipse and The Lobby Bar was amazing. Saturday night I had Butternut Squash Ravioli and my husband had Cinnamon Curried Lamb - we both said it was one of the best meals we have ever had. Our server, Murray, was courteous and attentive, and made our experience at Eclipse that much more enjoyable. We did, however, find the buffet breakfast to be "average."
The resort, overall, is beautiful, although we did find that this past harsh winter seemed to have taken it's toll as there are some outdoor areas in need of repair, as well as some dangerously bucking sidewalks.
We were glad to have purchased the Muskoka Your Way package, as I'm sure the added expenses for food and activities could add up very quickly. We would definitely recommend this package and will purchase it again in the future.
Overall, our experience was very relaxing, with the view, the food and the staff all top notch. We will be back for sure!

Room Tip: Summit Lodge rooms are newly renovated and have a small kitchenette.

Thank you for posting a review and the compliments on service and friendly staff. So glad that you enjoyed the renovated One Bedroom Suite in the Summit Lodges and that you took advantage of our Muskoka Your Way Package which includes accommodation plus a $100 resort credit.

We are sorry that you experienced some hiccups and are grateful you brought your concerns to our attention during your stay so we could rectify them immediately.

As the snow and ice just disappeared last week, our Grounds department has been working diligently to keep our guest areas safe and clean after a long winter. It is nice to see the perennial gardens starting to bloom and trees starting to bud. We are all looking forward to a warm summer!

Thank you again for sharing your experience with others on TripAdvisor. We look forward to seeing you again.

This is our third stay at Deerhurst, and we had a marvellous time. We usually stay at the summit lodge but this time we were at the Bayshore facing the lake. The rooms are a good size and modern. The beds are so good I wish we could take one back home with us. As usual there are lots of activities to get involved with, horseback riding, indoor rock climbing or just hiking on the surrounding trails. Every time we go back we find the hotel staff always friendly and accommodating, which shows good management. Deerhurst is now our go to retreat. Keep up the good work.
