“Tranquil and Accomodating”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2009

My Husband and I had a weekend getaway at the Briars away from our crazy work schedualsand busy kids. We couldn't have asked for anything more, our cottage was homely and peaceful, the service was excellent, food was great and the extra 'included' activities were a suprising bonus. I didn't want to leave and can't wait to go back!

Value - paid $200 for 1 night weeknight stay and breakfast, but due to a billing mistake on their part, we got a free $85 dinner! Food itself was pretty good (particularly the fries and panini sandwich), with limited vegetarian selections. Wine, coffee and snacks were extra, and generally quite overpriced. Free newspapers and magazines is a nice touch.

Facilities - smelly and musty throughout (our corner room with king sized bed smelled like a gerbil cage!), with old carpets and doors showing age. Limited soundproofing of walls. Gym was tiny and poorly ventilated. Pool was warm, and hot tub and sauna were quite comfortable. Games/billiards room were cozy, and selection of board/card games was excellent. Make sure you visit the tower/viewpoint for a great view of the lake. Only 1 elevator makes carrying luggage up and down the stairs a bit cumbersome!

Location - right across from Lake Simcoe, with easy access to a lakeside road to run along. Forest/golf/ski paths were fairly muddy and icy/slushy, although worth attempting as we got to see 3 deer! Easy to drive to, only 50 minutes from Thornhill!

Spa - friendly and well trained staff for a $54 half-hour Swedish massage. Shower, lockers and changerooms were reasonably kept.

Our room was nice but average...when we stay at other OFIs the look and quality of the accommodation is much better than average.
The food was expensive and half my meal was overcooked, while the other half was underdone. My husband found his meal bland (it certainly didn't look appetizing to me).
Of course, my first clue was the scores of dead insects still clinging to the outside lighting right outside the front door...it's been winter for a while now so someone should have had the time to clean them off since the warmer weather.
Not the kind of experience I expect when visiting one of Ontario's Finest Inns.

We are a group of 10 mid-age women who gather every April at the Briar's ..for a long weekend. We all come from near and far and this will be our 7th year in 2009. Can't say enough about our accommodation .. wonderful 7 bedroom (each w/private bath) cottage overlooking Lake Simcoe. Some of us relax .. curled up in the large .. comfy furniture with french doors looking onto the lake .. so nice! Others utilize main building for swimming/sauna, exercising, outdoor walkig trails, or bicycle (which the Inn provides free) for outdoor trails. We book 2 meals (breakfast/dinner) daily and we have complete selection from the Inn's dinner menu' (breakfast is a wonderful buffet!). The food is superb ... world class without a doubt!!!!!! Some of the gals partake in spa facilities .. massage, pedicures, etc. It's a beautiful spa environment and the staff are very friendly and professional. We book these appts.in advance of our weekend . Over the years .. we have developed a very nice rapport with the staff and Kae in the office has done a "bang up super" job of accommodating all our needs ... even extra special requests.
We had considered changing our venue to perhaps another Inn but taking everyhting into consideration ... it's within easy driving distance to Toronto and outer GTA. We shop for trinkets in some specialty shops in town and have gotten to know the merchants.
It's a most pleasant experience .. and we've all voted to stay with The Briar's Resort & Spa .. we love it there!!!

  • Liked — Private cottage suits our party of 10 of us ... we can make all the noise we wish!!

In past summers we have rented cottages on the lake. Generally cottages have been expensive and well cottage-y. This year we thought we would rent a cottage at the Briars and have someone else cook for us. The property is beautiful. Generally the staff are fine. We had our daughter in the kids program (basically babysitting with some crafts). That suited our daughter quite well (7 yrs old). Food was great at dinner. Breakfast and Lunch was fine -- essentially eat-and-go meals like any all-inclusive. Wait staff at restaurant for dinner was hit-and-miss but generally fine. If you have kids you are stuck in the back near the kitchen. We didn't figure this our until near the end and frankly I found that decision by the hotel as mildly irritating. May have been nicer to have given us the choice. The cottage we rented (Golfview) was clean, had two bedrooms, and was ideal for our needs. It is close to the outdoor pool and fairly secluded. The only very annoying thing that happened was on our second last day we went for lunch at the summer buffet dining room and unbeknowst to us the Briars had rented out that room and the surrounding activity area to a private party. No one had informed us and there was no signing to indicate that we couldn't use the facility. We entered for lunch as normal and grabbed a plate and then were quite rudely told by someone to leave that we were not allowed to eat there. Later the same group (very large group and moderately drunk) occupied the pool and engaged in a "cannon-ball" contest. Needless to say that whole experience sucked. So I would strongly recommend if you are going to stay at the Briars, ask whether there will be any private functions or parties that prevent you from using any of the facilities. Outside of this, we enjoyed our stay and would probably (70% chance) go back.

Ended up here for 2 nights after our flights to Florida for March Break got canceled. Visited previously 8 years ago - nothing much has changed! Rooms are on the small side but comfortable. Bathrooms are showing their age a bit. Overall the staff are very friendly. All the dining room staff are from Jamaica which is a little bizarre. We found they ranged for having very outgoing personalities to the complete opposite. Breakfast and lunch are buffets - average fare, nothing spectacular. Dinner is from the menu (which was falling to pieces) and was generally good although they seemed to skimp on desserts the last night - my daughter's "medley of ices and ice cream with a cookie" was 2 scoops of vanilla and no cookie. If I'd paid the $8 separately for that I would have been furious. The rating for the resort say it's not great for teens. We have a16 year old and she had a great time, even forsaking the iPod to play board games, ping pong, pool and cross country skiing. We noticed on check-out a few people were quite upset with the 15% service charge that gets added to the bill automatically so be aware with this and tax you're paying 25% more than the basic per person rate. In general it was as we remembered it and we would probably return. Not a cheap getaway though.

This was a girls weekend getaway. There are not enough wonderful things to say about the staff, right from the Front Desk (one of us locked our keys in the car) they arranged for someone to be there to remedy that within 7 minutes! The shuttle van drivers, Alex, Luke and Omar, were prompt, reliable and so much fun. The dining room staff, Rebecca, Germaine and Romaine, whatever our special request...they delivered! The meals were scrumptious, thank you to the chefs! Dancing Saturday night to great tunes provided by a great D.J.! Our cottage "The Eagle" was clean, well stocked with extra pillows, blankets, and logs for the fire! The sleigh ride was well organized, wished it could have been longer, thank you Harrisons! The pool/hot tub/sauna, lovely. Overall, great value for the money, much more than we expected. We had a an absolutely STUNNING time, thank you to everyone at the Briar's, we will be back!
