The Checkerboard is a one of those iconic, cheap, greasy, delicious, neigbourhood places that everybody knows. Their $3-$6 breakfasts offer better value even than Waterloo's infamous Mel's, but without the late hours and student crowd. Instead, you'll usually find an older clientele, a single over-worked waitress and a quiet, cheesy, fake-plant-filled atmosphere. The Polish sausage and egg breakfast is excellent, massive and, well, greasy. The burgers are good too, but avoid the mediocre Greek offerings. If you're in the neighbourhood check it out, but don't go too much out of your way.
