My boyfriend took me to Verses for my birthday and it had been recommended to us by a friend. After reading the reviews and being the "foodies" that we are, we were looking forward to trying out this restaurant. Although the presentation of the food and the food itself were very impressive, I have to say that we were greatly disappointed by our experience here. Having eaten at some of the best restaurants in Toronto, New York City and Paris, we consider ourselves to have a good idea of fine dining and great service. When we were seated, the host/bartender took our drink orders and said our server would be right over. Our table linen had a black stain on it and the flower at our table was wilted. After our drinks arrived, we waited an hour before our server even brought us a menu. The menu had smudge marks at the top of both pages. These may seem like small complaints, but when a restaurant sells itself as fine dining at these prices, there is a certain expectation of attention to detail. We both ordered the fois gras which was a $25 appetizer and the smallest piece of fois gras we have ever seen. The entrees didn't arrive until another hour after we finished our appetizers and they were equally disappointing in portion size. We didn't even bother ordering dessert since we had already been there for almost 3 hours and were considering picking up a pizza on the way home. We are not "cheap" when it comes do dining out. In fact we regularly go out and spend a couple of hundred dollars on dinner, but this place left us feeling "ripped off". We had just moved to the area and were looking forward to having a fabulous dinner at new restaurant that was close by but after our disappointing visit, we will be more inclined to make the drive to Toronto for a true fine dining experience.
