Owner description: Ontario's first European Community, Sainte-Marie among the Hurons was the headquarters for the French Jesuit Mission to the Huron Wendat people. In 1639, the Jesuits, along with French lay workers, began construction of a fenced community that included barracks, a church, workshops, residences, and a sheltered area for Native visitors. By 1648, Sainte-Marie was a wilderness home to 66 French men, representing one-fifth of the entire population of New France. Sainte-Marie's brief history ended in 1649, when members of the mission community were forced to abandon and burn their home of nearly 10 years. After extensive archaeological and historical research, Sainte-Marie among the Hurons is now recreated on its original site, where the mission's compelling story is brought to life.

“Sainte Marie among the Hurons”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2014

Inspirational inspiring place Very moving experience of true accounts in history Will never forget
Most moving was the actual graves of two of the martyrs inside the Church they used.
Also the small rooms with very bare basics the missionaries stayed in and the room where they cared for the sick and dying Indians

The interpretive staff were all excellent, able to answer a variety of questions. The site is well maintained and realistic looking. Overall very good value.

“Good To Look Back On The Past”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2014

I was very pleased to be shown this attraction as it might not have made a list for visiting in the area. A very good recreation of a French Missionary Mission and their association with the Wenday (Huron) people. There are many buildings recreated and a very interesting lock waterway system built in. The period dressed staff perform many exhibitions to enhance the understanding experience. A very large museum provides a wealth of information of the customs and civilization at the time. Worth the trip.

Lots of activities which start on time. Many costumed actors. Great opening from the movie into the site.

“I have been here many times and it came continues to interest me!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2014

A great historical site with many knowledgeable staff to answer your questions. The only thing I didn't like was the native woman in the longhouse made us feel as if we were interrupting her personal conversation. Other than that, everyone was approachable.
