Canmore has natural beauty - for that we are thankful. We were assigned the Bear Den by a lovely Australian girl front desk person, room 104. I went back and requested a higher unit, but (when she inquired of her manager whom we could not see in another room), was told they had more bedrooms, and since our bedrooms faced the street (literally a hop, skip and a jump up to the main street) we were in a "premium" unit, even though it felt like we were underground and had no veranda except a subterranian "landing". I requested chairs for the patio, and had to wait 3+ hours for them to be placed outside.
The unit itself was "clean" - but dated. King bed was lumpy, but comfortable - for privacy, you HAD to keep both the front windows with the shades down, and the bedroom windows with the drapes drawn... so the view was "lost" and so was the natural light to the unit. Kitchen counter had damage, and the ancient coffee machine worked but was stained/old. Cabinets were the white melmac with the oak There was a walkway right in front of the patio and then a bit of an embankment up to the road - so NOT private. A local hospital was right across the road, should we have needed their services.

Unit was spacious but not clean at all. Beds are like rocks and you wake up with pain.
In addition management is pretty rude as we had a need for an additional blanket for kids which was not honored. We moved out to adifferent hotel.

We booked 4 nights - should have checked it out better - one side Trains RIGHT OUTSIDE 20 feet away from your window - the other side CONSTANT TRAFFIC so it is a loose loose situation. Could not get in before 4pm and had to check out by 10am on last day or PAY to stay until Noon. Check In Girl was Excellent but her Manager just sat on her butt in full view while the girl struggled with a family checking in that had credit card problems (BEWARE of the $250 Dammage deposit that "might' be returned to you IF they don't find damage) and language difficulties. we were next in line but it still took her almost an hour to check them in - with the Manager visable in back room - not even helping or smiling - just comming out and whispering in the girls ear if she disagreed with what ever she was saying. When it was our turn, it still took a half an hour. Only parking for one car. No maid service until Check out - only allowed ONE coffee filter if you go to front desk to ask for one. Our Chairs were falling apart. one so bad we wouldn't let anyone sit on it. the floors were sooo dirty our socks and feet were BLACK so we ended up wearing our shoes in the place. NO Air conditioning and it was sooo hot! The trains were so loud with the windows open you woke up every time they went by 3-4 every night - not to mention the ones in the daytime. We got bit by a big black ant that was in our sheets the first night! after that we all stripped the beds before we could sleep. to get any fresh towels you had to corral a housekeeper in the mornings - but they were great. You also had to take out your own garbage before you left --or maybe would be charged?? the "Master" did have a King Bed but it opened onto the vaulted livingroom with at half wall so no privacy there. Overall will NEVER go back but we don't feel so bad now since we only paid about $170 per night with Expedia. My suggestion is to find a place that is OFF the Train Tracks if you can.

We have stayed at the CRC 3 or 4 times now.... It's a hit or a miss whether you get a clean or 'not-so-clean' unit! We have stayed in a bears den unit- sub basement, 2 bedrms, no real views - we had to request that the cleaning staff come and clean the dried up vomit of the walls (left by the previous occupant) in the bathroom. - no real apologies but the receptionist came quickly and cleaned it up!
The next time we stayed was in a mountain retreat (yes, we did stay here again) 3 bedrooms- views were great, didn't mind the train passing through (got used to it very quickly and the kids loved seeing them -1yr old and 3yr old). Unit was bit ragged and not very well cleaned again - we have stayed in 'newer' self-catering condos in Canmore, they may be cleaner but they are smaller, more expensive and not walking distance to the grocery stores!
Our last trip was in a Cougar chalet - these are more expensive because they have an extra bathroom and seem in better condition than the other units we have stayed in... The trade-off was that the balcony was facing on to the road so we chose to sit inside and enjoy our glass of wine!

Overall, these units are reasonably priced, BUT because they are all owned individually then it seems that there is differences in the quality and upkeep of each unit- I think the housekeeping standards are pretty low, but the bedding seems clean and I don't mind wiping down surfaces when I get there. The location is great because you can walk to the supermarket or into town and I LOVE the French bakery across the road for fresh baguettes, pastries and coffee... There is also a spa and an English pub within a couple of minutes walk;)
