“Very luxurious and comfortable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2012

After a few days of back country camping, we took up residence in the Solara Resort in Canmore. Upon entering our 2-bedroom suite we were pleasantry suprised by the atmosphere and theme of the room. It was cosy enough to be a 'home' and luxurious enough to be a great place to get back on our feet.

The kitchen was fairly large and well stocked with utensils and the second bedroom had it's own bathroom (undoubtedly so that it can double up as a separate hotel room when needed).

The staff was very pleasant and friendly and even though the documentation said that room service would only come every four days they did pick up the trash, replace and needed towels and add coffee every day. A little extra touch that made it awesome.

It's just on the outskirt of Canmore, but so close that you can easily walk into the city centre.

Definitely worth the stay if you want a few days of luxury and are willing to pay for it (~300 per night for us).

3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2012

We reserved Four, 2 bedroom suites in the Aurora building in July 2012.
First the highlights:
The rooms were very spacious and extremely clean; They were well stocked with dishes/amenities; Nice personal balconies with small BBQs. There is underground parking garage. The location is very good. There are many restaurants nearby. Banff is only a 10 minute drive. The property has a very nice courtyard with large propane BBQs; There is a SPA, excercise room, a large indoor 100 seating movie theater, a large indoor hot tub, a kiddie wading pool, and a kids water play area (but not a full size pool)

Now the Issues:

The biggest problem in ALL rooms was that the AC did not work (it was summer) and the inside room temperature was at 80 F (27 Celsius); We kept calling every day and were being told it was being worked on but it was never fixed. During the day we were out and about and when we came back to sleep it was always uncomfortable. They only have one window with a screen which we left open (it helped) but the balcony door had no screen and leaving it open was not an option given the mosquitoes around.
The second (and easily correctible problem) was that the front person Jacqui was rude, lazy, AND incompetent. For a multi-million dollar property where these units are sold as condos, the level of front desk service was UNacceptable. There were too numerous to list incidents were she was insistent that she was right on something but was obviously wrong; When it surfaced that she was wrong, she was dismissive of her error (and not apologetic at all);
Having said that, I will say the 2 male staff we dealt with at the front desk were extremely professional and courteous (one was likely the manager)

All in all this place has a great potential and it can certainly go from 3 stars to 5 stars with proper maintenance of the property and replacing the problematic front desk person.

If I were an owner/management, I would be upset that a front desk person (likely at less than $10/hr) was causing such a drastic turnoff to potential investors/renters

Room Tip: Having a room in the "Bow" building is more convenient than the further back "Aurora...

Went to Canmore to celebrate my fiances 30th birthday and had an amazing experience at the Solara Resort and Spa. The staff was really friendly and accomodating. The 3 bedroom suite we stayed at was nicer than my apartment. Just beautiful. I would definately recommend this resort to anyone going to Canmore.

We stayed in the Aurora side of the hotel and were VERY pleased with the rooms!! Our 3 bedroom, two bathroom suite, had it all - a spacious living room, kitchen and dinning area with beautiful decor, a balcony equipped with a BBQ and outside patio furniture!! The beds were super comfortable the shower with it's many shower heads was cool and the underground parking was nice too. The staff we extremely helpful and very accommodating - they allowed us to hide the surprise birthday cake in their kitchen for two days : ) I cannot wait to bring the family next time take in a movie and the splash area....I will be recommending this hotel to my friends and family AND co-workers!

The surprise birthday party ended as a success!!

We loved the uniqueness of the splash park. Also, it was pretty cool to go to our very own personal movie theatre. The room was beautiful!

We're from overseas and hadn't heard of Canmore before booking. Banff is much more famous, but we actually preferred Canmore which is a bit less touristy with plenty of places to eat and to walk. And much cheaper than Banff, so a really good alternative. I would describe the Solara as contemporary Canadiana, dark furniture, stone fire places and dark floors, but no moose heads or skis on the wall. High quality, efficient check in and friendly staff. Apartments were spacious and the wifi generally reliable. Free parking. Great value all round - a better option than Banff which is 30 miles or so away

Thank you for your review of Solara Resort and Spa... and for making us your home base while overseas!

The secret is out, Canmore is the best alternative to Banff. More and more travellers are choosing to stay in Canmore over Banff for many reasons including the same ones that you mention in your review. Solara's luxury condos feature full kitchens and BBQs on every patio/balcony, features that you cannot find in Banff hotels. We also have our very own private movie theatre, unique to the Bow Valley and free for our guests!
