“Family friendly, comfortable, another good choice for condo in Canmore”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013

We stayed during the kids spring break for 4 nights in March 2013. There are lots of choices for condo hotel type properties, but this one was the only one with a water slide which made it great for families. We have stayed at Blackstone and at The Lodges of Canmore so it was going to be a good comparison for us.

We arrived Friday afternoon and I made sure to ask that our room was in the same building as the swimming pool. I read somewhere that the building was actually split into separate areas. Turns out all the condo type rooms are in the main building, we were actually one of the farther rooms from the pool which made the walk back a little cold with little ones. Rented a 2 bedroom suite with full kitchen and it was big enough for an extended stay. The 2 bedroom suite we stayed in at Blackstone was much larger, but this one was fine. It did have all that we needed to cook and stay comfortably. We BBQ'd one night which was great as each suite had it's own natural gas BBQ. I would say that the property is starting to show some signs of wear and tear. Some of the caulking around the showers were splitting and the floors in the living area were very scratched up. Otherwise the room was fine for what we needed.

As far as the noise level that some have complained about, it wasn't so bad. I mean, you do hear people it the hall but we didn't notice our neighbors (perhaps we didn't have any). The last day we were there getting ready to leave, we did hear the people above us jumping around, they must have let their children go wild so we were glad to be leaving. Can't expect much more really as it is a big complex with lots of rooms. The only way to really eliminate that is with concrete construction and I bet there are no properties in Canmore that can provide that.

The pool was really great for the kids, but busy as many families came here. The towel situation was a bit of a gong show as the property had issues keeping up with the demand. However, I would say hording by the patrons was the real problem, no one needs to stack 8 towels for a family of 4. We only took 2 for me and my 3 kids which was fine.

One bad note which was not the fault of the property at all, our van was hit in the parkade and was damaged. The staff was helpful and did what they could. There were a lot of vehicles down there and in true Alberta form, lots of trucks that easily take up 2 spots. In the end, we left with a broken bumper.

So overall, the place was good, not the best I've been to in Canmore but would definitely come back again for the pool alone as most reviewers have stated. The staff was friendly and helpful and the room had everything we needed. I always stay in Canmore when going to the Rockies as it is way more affordable than Banff and it is only 15 minutes away from Banff if you want to go.

Dear Grande Rockies Resort Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to post a review on your recent stay at our resort and for choosing the Grande Rockies for your stay while in Canmore!

I am so pleased to hear you enjoyed the amenities available within your guestroom and within the Resort itself – our Natural Gas BBQ’s are great for an evening in while preparing your own meal. Thank you for your feedback on our Pool Towels and we are working on a new solution for this.

Our building is actually a steel and concrete structure!

Thank you again for your comments and we look forward to welcoming you back to the Grande Rockies on your next trip to Canmore.

Kind Regards,

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

Location:

Sure, you're in the amazing Canadian rockies, and in the beautiful town of Canmore. But this 'resort' is squeezed onto a bizarre little patch of land between a highway and a bunch of low-end retail and motel development. The area immediately around the hotel is a bit ugly -- and there's really no nature, nowhere to walk, and no ambience in the neighborhood. As a first impression, it's more "strip mall parking lot" than a resort. It sure ain't the Banff Springs Hotel.

Arrival and check-in:

No bell staff at the front door, but baggage carts lined up (apparently for one to use on their own). I'm fine with that, but that screams '3 star', not 4 or 5 star.

As for check-in, it was fast, efficient and professional in a very cramped check-in area.

Design of the lobby (and the amenties, such as the public bathrooms) was very cool and funky. The whole space is very small but very nicely done. The size - and the fact that the only window faces the indoor pool - sort of prevent the lobby from being a place where one would want to hang out.

Service from the front desk (including the one bellman who seemed to be everywhere on the property) was very nice and very professional throughout our stay. (They did seem '5 star'!)

Getting to our room:

We walked down a very long hallway to get to our room, and were concerned. The hall was ugly, and very institutional looking (or motel-like).

Not a stitch of artwork, with very bright, very stark, very white fluorescent lighting coming out of basic 'Home Depot' quality ceiling light fixtures.

Sure, it's only a hallway. But, again, a bad first impression. (Again, this hallway didn't seem "grande", and sure didn't feel like a "resort".)

The room:

Very nice! High end finishings (although showing its age, with many scratches and dings). Beautifully finished kitchen, although we didn't need it or use it. A very pleasant surprise compared to that stark, fluorescent hallway!

The shower unit that others have commented on is just plain weird and kind of ridiculous. We couldn't figure out how to use it (the instruction card left on our counter did not seem to match the shower in our room). It was too small (I'm 6'4") and struck me as being too difficult to clean properly for a 'public' shower stall (too many buttons and crevices and places that could never be cleaned very well between stays -- which kind of grossed me out.) Not my thing. But it did make us laugh.

The pool:

Imagine the kids' play pools and waterslide from a high-end public rec center, and then add a large hot-tub. (No real place for adults to truly 'swim', nor were there any other amenities here. And it's all fully indoors, save for a tiny, fully shaded courtyard that the hot-tub extends into.)

Our kids absolutely loved it, but it's showing its age and some items seem to be starting to fall into disrepair. And, like much of the hotel, some parts of it seem over-the-top fabulous while other parts seem cheap and/or just poorly designed. (e.g. a tiny, cheap shoe rack by the entry door that seems like it came from a dollar store. A very odd way to welcome guests to a grande resort's pool area)

Great amenities here for kids, but there's really nowhere to sit and relax. Towels had apparently run out -- none were to be had. The plastic tub of pool toys seemed more like garage sale leftovers than what a high end "resort" would offer. And the pool noodles were shredded to bits and should have been thrown out long ago. (Sure, the pool noodle thing seems minor. But they should be embarrased by something that's so easy to correct going uncorrected!)

Our night's stay:

We stayed one night, on Fri April 5. As we walked back to our room after dinner, we heard very loud parties taking place in three different rooms. Plus, there was a stench of cigarette smoke in the hall.

Fortunately, the building seemed very well constructed. The only noise we could hear in our room was from the hallway. No noise came from the adjacent rooms.

BUT . . . the noise from the hall was enough to keep us awake for much of the night. There were drunks roaming the halls until past midnight, with extremely foul language being screamed much of the night.

Granted, perhaps we should have called the front desk to request security. But (1) I typically don't stay in hotels where I ever need to call security and (2) wouldn't some hotel staff have been aware of the problem and tried to resolve it without waiting for guest complaints??

Based on the other reviews, I really hope that this night wasn't representative of this hotel's normal clientele -- perhaps it was a travel group just staying the one night.

The restaurant:

We'd heard great things about Habitat, the in-house restaurant - for dinner. Unfortunately we didn't try it (we already had other plans). We ate breakfast there -- the food was fine, but the service was rough and a bit novice. (After a very long wait, my entree came out totally wrong. They offered to have the kitchen re-do it. Not wanting to wait any longer - and since my family was already almost done eating - I just said "just leave it anyway, I'll eat it even though it's not what I ordered". But there was no further offer to fix the problem, and I paid full price for food that I didn't order, didn't really want, and didn't really enjoy.

Overall, it was nice. But, as mentioned, this place is neither "Grande" nor is it really a "Resort". It's a high end apartment building in a low-end area of Canmore. I'll probably go back if the price is right, but I wouldn't consider it a real vacation destination.

Booked a 2 night get a way with 2 other friends. We booked a 2 bedroom condo. The price was good. This way we all had our 'own' space, 2 bedrooms and a hide a bed in the living room. Beds are comfortable, hide a bed is what it is.. not great! The room was quite a distance from the lobby, and felt a little complicated to get there. The pool area is good. Loved the little 'outside' area where you could go in the hot tub. Underground parking was good nice.
Kitchen is fully stocked. Bathrooms (2) are good. Nice showers, incl. steam shower. Handy to just walk to the little restaurant, Habitat Restaurant & Bar. Expensive, but well worth it!

We arrived at the hotel last week late on night and where greeted with a warm welcome from the receptionist on shift - Aaron, I believe his name was. When we arrived there was a fire and Aaron mentioned that we could buy a smores kit and make smores so we parked the car and sat by the fire.
When we finally got to the suite, it was amazing. The room was beautiful furnished and the bedroom was amazing - the bed was one of the most comfortable beds that I have ever slept-ed in.
In the morning, we got a beautiful surprise when we woke up and saw the beautiful mountains. Even thought there was a fully functional kitchen we ordered room service, which was beautiful. Room service breakfast can always be a hit or a miss - but this was a huge hit. The food and the presentation where perfect and Gilliane (the girl who brought the food up) was so helpful in recommending things for us to do.
Everyone mentions the showers and they are a huge highlight, but everything about this resort was amazing. We never got a chance to use the pool or spa but we will on our next visit.

Room Tip: We had a room at the back of the hotel, which over looked Lady Macdonald

This was our third stay in 2 years.

Pros: removed VCR and have blue ray player.
- great pool area
-good coffee pot and microwave
Cons:
- found used dental floss in bathroom
- pillows way too fat and hard. Not god for women and children, and most men.
-beds hard and worn out. Used to be quite comfy
-pull out sofa needs replacing as there is too much wire poking and no padding.
-noisy by highway
-hot and ac wouldn't work, bedroom window opened wrong way for air flow.

Won't be back.

Overall a nice place to stay. We appreciated the space in the 2 bedroom condo we stayed in. It was nice to have a BBQ on our balcony, plus a washer/dryer in-suite to use for free. On the surface, it is avery stylish hotel, however found lots of broken and damaged items in our room - shower, flooring, cupboards, unpainted patched wall in bathroom, etc. For the price you pay, it would be nice for the hotel to pay attention to these details. Also, the hotel has to figure out who they are catering to. They are not quite there to be a luxury hotel and do not have the amenities for families. It seems to be a more draw for 20 year olds who want to share a suite.
