On a rainy Monday afternoon, there were few choices for lunch in Unionville. We chose La Grotta over the pub, which in retrospect was a mistake. It was quiet, which is fine, and the hostess/server was pleasant and charming, though the decor is faded and dated, making the interior dark. The major disappointment was with the food, which was simply not up to par. I had the Venetian pizza (14.95) and my friend had the portobello appetizer (8.95) with the caesar salad (7.95). She also asked for coffee, but had to wait nearly 20 minutes for it to brew, apparently - an irony as Starbucks is next door. The pizza was astoundingly salty, the sauce under-spiced, and the crust was clearly store-bought: I have had better pizza out of a supermarket freezer. The portobello mushrooms were well-prepared but 3 of the tiniest portobellos I've ever seen. The salad was bland, lacking any garlic/ anchovy kick and completely missing any bacon (though to be fair the menu doesn't say it's an ingredient). This is an Italian restaurant for people who have never been to a real Italian restaurant, or not since 1975 at least. Don't bother with this place - go to the pub, or just get a sandwich at Starbuck's.
