“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2010

Although the restaurant was not full the two of us were seated at a table near the restaurant entrance with a poor view. The view is one of the reasons to visit the resaurant. If there was no other seating I would understand.

The food portions were very small and not remarkable in taste.

The staff exit and entrance from the restaurant to get food/wine etc was by our table and that was not so much of an issue except they all seems to be rushing which did not contribute to a low keyed enjoyable evening.

One of the staff perhaps the wine steward was unshaven with a shirt sort of tucked in.

It wasn't one factor over another but as a package I was very disappointed in the restaurant and couldn't recommend it. Please go next door and get some faster and much cheaper food with an equal or better view.

“Disappointing Experience - Staff Attitude and Portion Sizes”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2010

We took customers from Texas tonight to the Observatory Restaurant at Grouse Mountain. Our group was five people. Here is a short summary of our experience:

When arriving, no hostess was present. Two staff members very busy around the hostess desk, but neither noted that we were waiting. We had to ask a third person appearing at the hostess desk who then went to find an appropirate person.

All main meals are $ 36 each. When our meals arrived, the portions were microscopically small. Good quality, very fancy, but not enough to feed an average person. High price, tiny portion of fancy food.

After serving the meals, the waiter never came by to ask about our meals, so we were not able to give him feedback.

When an alternate waitress brought the dessert menu, I questioned her about the portion sizes. She offered to get the mananger.

When the manager came, he did not identify himself and only inquired as to why I want to speak to him. On mentioning the portion sizes, he simpy stated that their restaurant focuses on qualilty. No further explanation or inquiry about our visit to this restaurant. He was not interested to speak to us.

Summary:
If you want a good meal at a decent price, stay away from this place. If you want a high quality meal with an adequate portion size, stay away from this place. If you want good, caring service, stay away from this place.
The only reason to eat at the Observatory is If you just want the ambiance of eating at the top of Grouse Mountain and enjoy they view over the city.

“Pretensions to blandness”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2010

Formerly a pleasant enough "view" restaurant with above average food for an obviously touristy location, The Observatory has declined significantly. The head chef appears to have just discovered the idea of nouvelle cuisine, but seems to have learned what he knows from pictures rather than flavours. Tiny portions of boring food - an embarrassment if you want to provide a visitor with a nice evening. Go next door to the bistro where the food is better and vastly cheaper.

“A big disappointment”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2009

We ate in the fine dining section. When the starters came I was a little concerned as they were so small but when the main courses came I was horrified. They were tiny. I eat out a lot in London and in fact work in 5* hotels with fine dining restaurants so understand the concept but this was terrible: you could eat it in 2 mouthfuls. The quality was good but fine dining does not have to mean that they do not provide an adequate meal or value for money. There were no additional vegetables on offer and we left after the main course to go elsewhere, rather than finish the evening in the style we hoped. I can only assume that they are for tourists only as they would never get repeat business. A sad let down for Vancouver tourism.
