“Craftsman Style Elegance”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2013

We happened upon ThistleDown House luckily while searching for a nice quiet place to stay during our vacation in Vancouver, BC. Rex and Ruth were very welcoming, informative, and helpful and their home/B & B was as sophisticated and warm, charming and comfortable and phenomenal as any we have ever experienced. Breakfasts were amazing. The beds were comfortable, and it was obvious that the owners have made every effort to make each persons stay feel special, and unique. The common parts of the house were so comfortable I felt as though I was at home. A fireplace in our room, a bathroom that was generous in size yet cozy in feel, even robes to use during our stay. It is so telling that the owners have put years of work into perfecting the accommodations and service. Their past and present occupations are evident in the decor, and the breakfast feasts.

As birders (bird watchers to those not familiar with the term), we were smitten with the feeder set up just outside the dining room window, where one of our party scored a life bird. Rex and Ruth were very familiar with the birds, and the area for birding. They provided maps for us to use on our day excursions looking for certain species.

If we ever get the opportunity to visit North Vancouver again, we will undoubtedly stay at the ThistleDown House. This was a true gem in a beautiful area, and we had a great time there and birding the surrounding area.

Room Tip: Ask for the gas fireplace room on the first floor for romantic evenings.

We really enjoyed our two night stay at ThistleDown House. It was right beside a bus stop where we took at 10 minute ride to Grouse Mountain. We went snowshoeing for the first time! The breakfast at ThistleDown was excellent, and even though we had to leave the second morning before 6am, they arranged a cab to pick us up and had a great take-away breakfast ready for our departure. The room was so neat and clean, too!! Thanks for a great trip!

We arrived to be greeted by Rex and Ruth as if we were part of the extended family, The room was bright and comfortable and the bathroom spotless and tidy. As was the beautiful decor throughout the property. We were introduced to the other guests and settled in for some amusing anecdotes from all assembled, lubricated by mine-host's largess. We were advised on the location of several good eateries for our evening meal and given comprehensive directions to each (again the attention to detail). In the morning we were treated to a substantial communal gourmet breakfast, where the light banter from the evening befor continued. We had a very enjoyable two night stay. This house is a wonder to behold, from the moment you arrive you feel "At home", a definite place to visit and a must for anybody's list of places to stay!

Room Tip: All the rooms are comfortable and well appointed, furnished with taste and style.

Our ... 4th? visit to ThistleDown over last 12 years - even brought our elderly mothers one year. This is a wonderful place to get away to. Ruth and Rex, our hosts, are genuine, friendly folks who treat you more like friends than "clients." On one visit Rex greeted us at the door with "Welcome home" and it felt / feels just like that. The house is a heritage home with hardwood everywhere and a Victorian feel. Ruth & Rex have received awards for their restoration efforts.

The "Under The Apple Tree" suite is large, has a king bed, large bathroom with shower and double jacuzzi tub, a door to a garden/patio under the apple tree, a seating area in front of a gas fireplace ... if this isn't romantic I don't know what is. Today we spent time hiking in Capilano Park (minutes away), had coffee at Delaney's in Edgemont Village and will be going to the Canyon restaurant, in Edgemont, for dinner : )))) Today's breakfast included OJ, little pancakes with yogurt, steelhead & fiddlehead greens on saffron risotto ... wow! Can't wait or tomorrow's breakfast.

A great B&B experience!

Room Tip: if you are wanting to splurge a little - choose the "Under the Apple Tree" suite

Very comfortable room - most amazing breakfasts - very helpful hosts. We stayed for 2 nights at the end of our holiday before flying home to the UK. The room and bathroom were very comfortable and quiet. The breakfast is the most amazing we have ever had anywhere. Drinks were available whenever we wanted throughout the day and a fridge was available for our use. There was also internet use available which we used to double check our return flights. The hosts were very helpful helping us plan our itinerary for the day. Would love to stay here again if we make a return visit.

We stayed at very late notice and were upgraded to a King Room as it was quiet. The room was very comfortable and quiet, and the breakfast was an outstanding 3 course gourmet, the best we have had while over here. Ruth was very attentive and helpful, and clearly takes great pride in her business. The complimentary port in the evening topped things off nicely. Quite expensive in season but out of season better value. A top class establishment.

We stayed for a couple of nights before flying home after a long trip around BC & Alberta. This was the perfect spot to down tools, relax, re pack and reflect on our travels. Ruth, Rex and the Scotties are great hosts. A perfect balance of welcoming B&B (meeting every need, drinks on demand, fridge available, mega fluffy towels) and privacy. We arrived late having not pre-booked and Ruth made us very welcome. We were given a complimentary upgrade and this was a real treat. We loved Under the Apple Tree room with its sunken sofa area and jacuzzi bath and the complimentray port went down well too. Breakfast and conversation was terrific. The steel head trout (caught two days before) and edible ferns were a great taste of Canada and really appreciated.

Locally, it's a great spot. The walk to the dam around the coastal rainforest trail was just the perfect amble. Taking in the Salmon hatchery (free) the walk is well worth doing and can be done from your door step. Edgemont is a pleasant centre with coffee / gift shops, banks etc. Alternatively if you haven't done Vancouver (we had at this point) you are right at the bus stop for a direct bus into Stanley Park, the harbour or down town.

We would definitely stay here again. Don't even question it, if you like B&B's book it!

Room Tip: I suspect they are all pretty good. Some will differ in size. But we loved Under the Apple Tree ro...
