Tropika, ever since its move into Aberdeen Centre, has become a place that I would not volunteer to go due to its rude and inefficient service. However, some friends continue to like this place, so I continue to go from time to time. Each time I visit, things appear to have gone just a tad worse.
Some reviewers have talked about the waiters being discriminatory against non-Asians; it is not my experience. Me and my friends are Asians, and we were still treated poorly and unfairly. The same food ordered by another table after us arrived earlier, and they had bigger portions. The waiter turned a blind eye on us because one of our friends had a coupon that would give her a free appetizer, and actually tried to say to her that her coupon had expired when there was at least a good month and a half remaining.
We had a large party of 16 at the time of the visit, and the waiter and manager wasted no time in hurrying us to finish, saying that they had another reservation for 14 1.5 hours after our reservation. We pointed out to the manager that there were plenty of tables around; after some back-and-forth we were finally told that we had the tables by the window, and the next guests had specifically requested to be seated there. We asked why we were not seated elsewhere when we came in when they knew full well that there would be guests needing those tables, and no answers were given to us. Needless to say, we were very unhappy by then, and wanted to leave the place as quickly as possible.
Some reviewers have spoken about the food served not being fresh - this was my experience as well. Specifically, it was the pine apple fried rice - it was served warm, not hot, leading me to believe that it was microwaved long after it had been cooked.
The food quality, overall, has gone done significantly over the years, not to mention that the portion has also gotten smaller. There are "friends" of the restaurant, who we could see, are still getting the old bigger portion, another testament that Tropika has really run out its welcome for me.
I have written over 20 reviews at Tripadvisor, and had never ranked a restaurant with one star. However, I have no hesitation in giving this restaurant a one-star rating, because its service and food are both way below par, and the restaurant did not seem to care. It is a restaurant that I would not go on my own (Richmond had plenty of quality restaurants; even in Aberdeen Centre there are some much better places to eat), and would have reservations in going even when I am invited.
