“Near the Airport!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2010

Location: The Hotel is between the Skytrain stations (Canada Line) Bridgeport and Arberdeen (10-15 walk) off the No. 3 Road. Bridgeport is the closest station. It's behind the Comfort Inn and near an out of place Italian restaurant. If you have a car, drive through the Comfort Inn to get to the Westin as the street closest to the Westin is one way.

Hotel: Small lobby, almost boutique like as you weren't sure who is the concierge. Their restaurant, Apron, is suppose to be good, but we didn't eat there. Front desk staff were business like but not unfriendly. They were helpful if you ask, but that's about it.

Amenities: Not sure if you have to pay for parking, paid internet and breakfast is offered. Nothing free here....not even the water. Items included in the room is the safe (in closet), refrigerator, in room coffee maker using the pods, and hair dryer. Bathroom is nice and spa like, with a soaking tub, but due to the size of the sink, very little counter space for stuff. The vent system is great, as the mirror does not fog up after the shower. We had the king, it was comfortable and spacious. Free shuttle to airport but didn't see any offering to the casino.

What's nearby: Starbucks is about a 4-5 mins walk; there's an out of place Italian restaurant across the street. A liquor store is located in front of Comfort Inn. You can catch a few buses off the No. 3 Road, We didn't ride the buses only used the skytrain. The Boathouse is a short walk away (across the street). Also walking distance (15 minutes) are two popular Asian malls that offers quick eats or unusual asian shops you normally do not find in the states. Without a car, it's really not a good location, but if you have a car, it's an okay location.

My family and I stayed in this hotel the night before we departed vancouver. We wanted a hotel that we could trust and have a good night`s sleep in. We definetley got this. But,even though the beds were excellent, it was a complicating and ackward drive to reach the hotel.
When we got there we were greeted by a extrodinary valet who helped us with our luggage.Check-in was easy and we were soon in our room. There was a problem with the AC but soon it was up and running. Later that evening we decided to eat at the hotel`s restaurant ,The Apron.Oh what a meal!:) It was by far the best meal of the trip. This was a great find.

The hotel itself was beautiful and brand new. Had we not just arrived very late with young kids I'm sure we would have appreciated it much more. Westin's always have great beds, pillows and linens. Overall it was a quick stay, but we would likely go back if we had to be somewhere really close to YVR.

Stayed here two nights 8/5-7/10. This location was on my Garmin Nuvi GPS, but it is in a difficult to find location. Check in was a breeze, but I don't know why as an Starwoods member, you ask for extra towels and pillows, they are not there when you check in. Of course, they are very accommodating when you call housekeeping, but then I always feel I have to tip. The lobby was disappointing (nonexistent), not the usual Westin look. In fact, there were only two side benches for sitting. Also, upon check in and check out, the valet person was no where to be found..... Had to wait 15 minutes just for him to show up. I can't complain too much since I booked this hotel for
$112/night. Oh yeah, another bummer, $28.85 for parking a night!

I selected this hotel because the advertised room rate was lower than others in the area and it looked like it had some reasonable amenities (onsite gym). The main plus point is that the building is pretty new so there's no 'tired' feeling to the hallways and rooms yet. The *BIG* downside was the lack of self parking: either you park your car at the sidewalk some dubious looking streets in the surrounding area or you cough up $30 for valet parking every night. Add that to your hotel room rate before you make any decisions about this hotel. Also, there is no free internet service so add another $20 or so to the room rate if you need to get online... Given the choice again, I would have picked a different hotel with a little more wear on the carpet but fewer surprise fees for basic services like parking and internet access.

Kudos for nice finishings, close to airport convenience. Rooms are well appointed but quite small, particularly for a Westin. They had very limited space to work with and rushed to get this hotel open for the Olympics, and in many ways it shows. The lobby is simply not what you'd expect from a Westin when you walk in, it is very tight, but attractive. The desk however, is perpetually understaffed with long wait times. I stayed there twice and the experience was the same each time. I have to echo what the earlier reviewer said about them sorely needing training. Nice people, but they get a confused look a lot at simple requests and if you hit them at a busy time you're in trouble, as there is rarely more than one person at the front desk and one bellhop for the entire hotel. Oh, and if you need to mail or ship an important business package, as in major hotel anywhere can help you with? Forget it, the hotel has neither stamps, postage, or shipping services, with nothing nearby either. I couldn't believe that. I had two hours to an international flight and took some important documents to the front desk to ship for me and they couldn't do it, so I had to scramble all over the airport at the last minute to get it done before my flight. My friend had similar experiences, calling down for bags 20 minutes early, then arriving and finding no one had told the bellman and nothing was ready and he was busy. We were told a couple of times "the shuttle is coming right now" and it never showed up (it is shared with two other hotels) and so we paid an extra $15 each way for taxis to the airport. At least it is close.
Now to the pricing. The bar is nice, appetizers and food tasteful and creative. I can afford to stay anywhere I like and have regularly stayed at the airport Fairmont and other local high end hotels, but this one shocked even me with some of their prices. I ordered a martini for a colleague and myself and they were $34, so $40 with a tip. My buddy then asked for a club soda, which at most bars would be free after a tab like that, or maybe a couple of bucks. Nope, $5. The term "clip joint" comes to mind. Now it isn't that unusual to pay $15 for a premium martini in a big glass at many major hotels, though $10-12 is more in line. However, with BC liquor laws they can only pour 2 ounces or less, so essentially when you pour it in a glass you're only getting half a glass compared to most locations. You think they might adjust the price down a little for that, eh? Nope.
One final note: Though the rooms are well appointed, they are small, and on side of the hotel (the side with mostly king beds) they overlook a concrete plant. The rooms are pretty well insulated from the flights, but the industrial noises from the concrete plant go on all night. What a wonderful view as well.
I think this hotel can come around eventually, but they have a LOT to fix first, starting with staff training.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2010

My husband and I stayed one night last week, before flying to a business trip. We found the property to be very nice (it's new, opened in Feb 2010) and the restaurant surprisingly good. Rooms and bedding were comfortable; electronics were confusing (as noted by a prior commenter). There was little information in the room to explain basic things -- such as, where is the business center? (There is one, but you have to explore to find it.)

Our gripes:
1. The hotel was very hard to find. It didn't exist in our Garmin GPS; the cell phone operator doesn't have a listing for them at all. I had to get the phone number by first calling the Westin in downtown Vancouver, and asking them to look up the Westin Wall Centre number. After reaching the Wall Centre hotel, we got terrible driving instructions that directed us to a road a block away, where we were told to look for the hotel "on the left". We drove miles out of our way. A second call produced better instructions, but we had driven quite a bit before finally finding the place. We reported these challenges to the desk clerk who checked us in; he was not really interested. Recommendation: print out Google driving instructions - who knows when they're on GPS?
2. We had a reasonable room rate (booked through Expedia) - but were serious ripped off by a mandatory $22 valet parking charge, topped off by another almost $8 tax on the valet charge. And there was no self-parking! It wasn't an option. We also had an $18 charge to use the business center for 5 minutes to print out a 10 page document. Cheesy, and irritating.

We can't recommend this hotel until they get their act together. The comfortable room, the convenience of its proximity to Vancouver Airport, were outweighed by our irritation at feeling ripped off, and the lack of staff concern about our challenges finding the hotel.
