4 of us went for a meal yesterday evening, a Tuesday at the end of April. This is a super traditional pub in a very beautiful village. There was a roaring log fire and I ordered a delicious hot cider to drink. The specials board was very interesting and hard to chose from. There was Duckling in a bramble sauce (my choice), venison, lamb (Greek dish), pork, and a fish dish, all at just under £11 a head. On our evening there was no vegetarian option, though, which is the only reason I've not given 5 stars, although I'm told there usually is at least one vegetarian special. The quality of everything was excellent, with properly reduced sauces and such, while the portions were ample, and in the case of the pork chop, seriously large!
I'm gluten intolerant (coeliac) and the very helpful chef explained that I could have almost a free choice from the menu as virtually everything could be made in a gluten free way. Although none of us had a dessert (too full), I asked him about gluten-free deserts because people like me get a bit sick of pavlova/ice cream/fruit salad as the only options. He explained how he can make special pancakes on spec, which sounded a very interesting option for a coeliac.
All in all, delicious food at totally reasonable prices with good friendly service in comfortable surroundings. What more could you ask for?
